Sylvartas ,

As a "gamer" and game developer, this is sound advice.

Sylvartas ,

That makes sense, but then you'd just have people converting the int to a float manually and run into the exact same issues.

Sylvartas ,

Agreed. But the less experienced programmers I know are surprisingly naive about this.

Sylvartas ,

Meh. Imo anyone comparing an integer to a float and not expecting one of them to be implicitly casted to the other's type will create that issue for themselves when doing the same thing with an explicit cast.

Sylvartas ,

Yeah they have some cool gadgets and designs, but this kind of shit + the software side has always kept me away from the brand

Sylvartas ,

I second this. Works almost flawlessly out of the box (I had to install another version of the Nvidia driver from the pop shop because my 3080 didn't like the 470 version but other than that I had no issues, except with some games that require a kernel level anticheat)

Sylvartas ,

How ? I did manage to accidentally lock myself out of my main Nvme drive the first time because I chose the encryption option and fucked up the password because of keyboard layout shenanigans, so I reinstalled it without encryption because I'm the only person with access to this PC anyway, but everything else went smooth as butter.

Sylvartas ,

Was it some vendor's prebuilt PC maybe ? Those can have some weird parts that can be hard to get to work properly on Linux.

Sylvartas ,

I would assume that the safety switch helps with that

Sylvartas ,

Of course. But if you're the kind of person who would carry a gun in their waistband you probably have a looser definition of gun safety than most people

Sylvartas ,

I see it all the time IRL in summer. I live in France though so that probably helps

Sylvartas ,

I'd argue all the humans left when artstation became big. All my artists friends used to upload their (non porn) work to deviantart before artstation was popular. But banning the porn was the first nail in the coffin for sure.

Sylvartas ,

The UI looks more "slick", and it is censored, so your portfolio or whatever you want to showcase isn't displayed alongside some MLP porn or pregnant Sonic comics. Which doesn't mean there isn't tons of "artistic nudity" on the site though, last time I checked.

I'm not an artist myself but I know the artists in my industry (videogames) love to use it

Sylvartas ,

Yeah I was gonna comment that 0.25*(1/0.5) = 0.5 doesn't look nearly as weird

Sylvartas ,

Imo, as soon as you write it as 0.25 multiplied by a fraction it works, because you can then easily see that it's the same as (1/4)*2

After announcing increased prices, Spotify to Pay Songwriters About $150 Million Less Next Year (www.billboard.com)

When Bloomberg reported that Spotify would be upping the cost of its premium subscription from $9.99 to $10.99, and including 15 hours of audiobooks per month in the U.S., the change sounded like a win for songwriters and publishers. Higher subscription prices typically equate to a bump in U.S. mechanical royalties — but not...

Sylvartas ,

Spotify's model is doomed to fail over time.

This right here. At the very least, unless they are not beholden to shareholders, it will eventually reach market saturation and will have to cut artists' share, hike prices up, or add more paywalls to keep the line going up

Sylvartas ,

I'm not exactly the age or attractiveness that most people expect in a touring musician, either.

Just start making IDM. Looking weird and/or unattractive seems to be a requirement (and, don't get me wrong, I'm here for it)

Sylvartas ,

So you're telling me I should just turn up the volume instead of fixing my install ?

Sylvartas ,

I have never seen it framed as "it is an absolute disgrace that this game does not have a hard mode, and if you think otherwise you are an idiot and/or ableist (or whatever the opposite would be)" tbh. Which is pretty much what the easy mode advocates were saying about Sekiro the last time I followed that debate

Sylvartas , (edited )

Perhaps you just have a different view on what is or is not an ad.

Always fucks me up when I use someone else's computer and immediately get assaulted by the fucking candy crush ad in the start menu, start grumbling about it and/or ask if they want me to disable it, and the person goes "idk I never noticed it lol"

Israel using Meta's WhatsApp to kill Palestinians in Gaza through AI system (www.middleeastmonitor.com)

According to software engineer and blogger, Paul Biggar, however, one key detail on the methods employed by the Lavender system that is often overlooked is the involvement of the messaging platform, WhatsApp. A major determining factor of the system’s identification is simply if an individual is in a WhatsApp group containing...

Sylvartas ,

even if you don’t know for sure that the machine is right, you know statistically that it’s fine. So you go for it.

This kind of shit is why I have zero faith in the fact that AI will be used responsibly in basically any field. Mfs are already using it to avoid taking responsibility for potential war crimes ffs.

Not women but, they have a spot on my personal list:

  • hbomberguy
  • Dan Olson
  • MandaloreGaming
Sylvartas ,

Personally, Veritasium is out of that list for me due to some of his more recent videos. He still has some good content but I really disliked that "rods from God" video where it feels like he's basically doing the same thing as the "How Ridiculous" guys and trying to disguise it as science communication. And the (admittedly few) ones where he's basically disguising advertising as his regular content.

I nominate BobbyBroccoli to take his spot.

Sylvartas ,

Yeah, Raymond Hill made a great plugin, but the people maintaining the lists are the real MVPs

Sylvartas ,

Amen to that

Windows 11 Start menu ads are now rolling out to everyone (www.theverge.com)

Microsoft is starting to enable ads inside the Start menu on Windows 11 for all users. After testing these briefly with Windows Insiders earlier this month, Microsoft has started to distribute update KB5036980 to Windows 11 users this week, which includes “recommendations” for apps from the Microsoft Store in the Start menu....

Sylvartas ,

Windows 11 (and how much I like my experience with the Steam deck, if I'm being honest) has me seriously reconsidering switching to Linux for my gaming desktop

Sylvartas ,

I'm considering it even more seriously right now. I had my eyes set on Fedora, but apparently I shouldn't, because they are ditching official support for X11, and I need it because I have an Nvidia GPU ? I was also looking at pop OS, but I also saw people recommending against Ubuntu on Lemmy, I don't remember why though. Do you have a recommendation ?

Fairbuds are Fairphone’s proof that we really could make better tiny gadgets (arstechnica.com)

But of course we all know that the big manufacturers don't do this not because they can't but because they don't want to. Planned obsolescence is still very much the name of the game, despite all the bullshit they spout about sustainability.

Sylvartas ,

They're headphones. They sound ok at best.

Sylvartas , (edited )

Personally I don't really give a fuck about headphones quality unless it's particularly shitty, because if I want quality I'm using one of my headsets (preferably one that doesn't use Bluetooth), but ok.

Also what the fuck is judgy about my personal preferences ? I'm not going to think less of someone because of their choice of audio hardware lmao. And personal preferences are personal. Yes I am a bit anal about the sound quality of my headsets but that is strictly a me problem.

Sylvartas ,

I'm not a native English speaker so, yeah, I used the wrong term because I forgot that the word "earbuds" exists. But what I meant is simply that sound quality is not the selling point for earbuds.

If I go for earbuds I want them to have good battery life and be comfortable because I have weirdly shaped ear canals, and I'm only going for "decent" sound because the ones that actually sound on par with a good pair of over ear headphones are like twice the price, at best. Also, yeah, wired is usually my go to for quality. My favorite so far on that front are my ATH M50X but they are not super comfortable for extended use because of my big ass ears so I'm still looking for the holy grail in that price range.

Sylvartas ,

Yeah that comment was too concise, which often comes off as condescending according to my friends. Also I used the wrong term because I meant earbuds specifically.

Which is not to say that earbuds all sound bad, it's just that imo, when you're starting to look at (especially Bluetooth) earbuds that sound on par with a good pair of, say 150€ over ear cabled headphones geared for sound quality, imo it's too expensive for something that I'm not gonna use extensively (because I'd much rather use over ear headphones for prolonged use, if only for comfort)

Sylvartas ,

No, on users profiles they are organized chronologically by default, and you can sort them by votes, both on Reddit and on Lemmy

Sylvartas ,

it's the case over here and it's EU-wide for electricity providers

I find it interesting that this is a good thing in the US and most of Europe, but in France this majorly fucked our electricity market by forcing the (mostly) state funded electricity producer into selling their electricity to some companies that provide no value aside from being an intermediate between the producer and the consumer (they are not required to produce their own electricity to buy some from EDF at a discount, and they are even allowed to sell it to consumers for less money than the lowest price EDF is allowed to charge when they are doing the same thing, because of some dumb regulations I can't remember).

All in the name of the free market because "monopoly bad", even though electricity production and especially distribution is, as you said, a natural monopoly.

Sylvartas ,

Adblock lol

(If you are still using Adblock, I beg you, switch to ublock origin. Adblock takes money from advertisers to not block their shit.)

Sylvartas ,

Please tell me how an AI model can distinguish between "inspiration" and plagiarism then. I admit I don't know that much about them but I was under the impression that they just spit out something that it "thinks" is the best match for the prompt based on its training data and thus could not make this distinction in order to actively avoid plagiarism.

Sylvartas ,

Dude I am actively trying to take your arguments in good faith but the fact that you can hardly post an answer without name calling someone is making it real hard to believe you are being genuine about this

Sylvartas ,

I get your point, but as soon as you ask them to draw something that has been drawn before, all the AI models I fiddled with tend to effectively plagiarize the hell out of their training data unless you jump through hoops to tell them not to

Sylvartas ,

With leather it usually takes weeks of wearing them at least 5-10h a day

Sylvartas ,

It's been banned from Nature for a while now

Sylvartas ,

I have no idea if it attracted the attention of any regulatory body but yeah that's pretty much how it went down as far as I know

Sylvartas ,

And aren't the bored apes the ones that somewhat held their value over time ? I heard somewhere that all the other jpgs NFTs plummeted even harder

Sylvartas ,

Heh, same here but 6, 8, 9. I'll just woo the ladies with my delicious pizzas

how can something be so courageous and yet so true (slrpnk.net)

Edit: Jesus Christ, people. If you buy a $150 Thinkpad made by slave labor instead of a $1,200 MacBook made by slave labor, you're still supporting a capitalist economy based on slave labor. We all do. We have no choice. The number of smug liberals in the comments saying "well I buy a cheap used laptop" or "well I buy coffee...

Sylvartas ,

I'm no Apple fan but I'm scratching my head at this comment. Would any other brand of laptop be "less capitalist" somehow ? Just because they are less overpriced than macs ?

Sylvartas ,

I was healthier in my early twenties because I actually had time to workout tbh. I need to make the time to start doing it regularly again...
