I bet their lawyers might not think it's a great idea.

CEO of Google Says It Has No Solution for Its AI Providing Wildly Incorrect Information (futurism.com)

You know how Google's new feature called AI Overviews is prone to spitting out wildly incorrect answers to search queries? In one instance, AI Overviews told a user to use glue on pizza to make sure the cheese won't slide off (pssst...please don't do this.)...

The Internet immediately worked, which is one big difference. The dot com financial bubble has nothing to do with the functionality of the internet.

In this case, there is both a financial bubble, and a "product" that doesn't really work, and which they can't make any better (as he admits in this article.)

It was obvious from day 1 how useful the Internet would be. Email alone was revolutionary. We are still trying to figure out what the real uses for LLM are. There appear to be some valid use cases outside of creating spam and plagiarizing other people's work, but it doesn't appear to be any kind of revolutionary technology.

TurtleJoe ,

Yes, and add a little bit of cold war style paranoia in there as well. These companies know that their product doesn't work very well, but they think their competitor is maybe right on the verge of a breakthrough, so they rush to deploy and capture market share, lest they get left completely behind.

I dated a woman that worked in TV ad production. Everything has to be real food.

TurtleJoe ,
@TurtleJoe@lemmy.world avatar

I'm saying that you can't use scotch guard or anything like that.

It's been a while, but I don't believe that they were allowed to use cardboard or anything of the sort to prop up or modify the appearance of the product. Instead, they would cook say 100 burger patties, go through dozens of heads of lettuce, slice 100 tomatoes, etc, and pick out the perfect pieces to make a burger that looks the way that they want.

The most that they could adulterate the food was to make a slurry with corn starch, water, and food dye that could be applied with a paint brush to make things look juicy, etc. They would use a clothes steamer to make a pizza look just right. Lots of tricks, but it had to be something that you could just pick up and eat, even if you wouldn't necessarily want to.

Kinda. These people like hierarchy, partially because then they know exactly where everybody stands. They of course don't want to be at the very bottom, but understand that they won't be at the top, either.

It seems clear to me that he hates the people that are ruining the tech industry, ripping off customers, and pumping out shitty projects for short term stuck pumps, and he takes every opportunity to shit on those people and point out their idiosyncrasies. That's pretty much every tech CEO these days.

It's also pretty clear to me that he believes in the promise of the industry, and thinks that workers deserve better than the people that they work for.

They were using machine learning to try and figure out what people were buying. Machine learning has lots of errors until you train it.

Machine Learning, no matter how well trained or advanced, is just doing a make-em-up.

Besides that, in this case the experiment has been going on for years and humans were still doing like 70% of the work. It was a failure, that's why Amazon shut it down

Court Bans Use of 'AI-Enhanced' Video Evidence Because That's Not How AI Works (gizmodo.com)

A judge in Washington state has blocked video evidence that’s been “AI-enhanced” from being submitted in a triple murder trial. And that’s a good thing, given the fact that too many people seem to think applying an AI filter can give them access to secret visual data.

Everything that is labeled "AI" is made up. It's all just statistically probable guessing, made by a machine that doesn't know what it is doing.

TurtleJoe ,
@TurtleJoe@lemmy.world avatar

I think it's telling that they acknowledge that the stuff their bots churn out is often such garbage that training their bots on it would ruin them.

TurtleJoe ,
@TurtleJoe@lemmy.world avatar

I mean, the ability to churn out maybe amounts of these fake photos with no effort on the part of the user, causing them to pollute real Internet searches (also now "augmented" by MLB themselves) is definitely AI specific.

Also, colorizing photos is not the same thing as making fake ones.

    Not seriously, "men's rights activists" are a specific group of people that only exist to complain about and hate women. They don't care about men's rights, they are anti-feminists.

    If you genuinely didn't know this, then I'd love to know what Internet rock You've been hiding under. If you're trying to concern troll, fuck off, MRAs are fucking scum.

    I think the real reason that Koch foundation, etc al, funded her campaign until last week was still that they'd have somebody qualified in case it's rolled that Trump is ineligible.

    Reddit has been a private company for its entire existence. There really isn't a point in it making a profit, as long as the people running it are paying themselves.

    Lol. It doesn't do video generation. It just takes existing video and makes it look weird. Image generation is about the same: they just take existing works and smash them together, often in an incoherent way. Half the text generation shit is just fine by underpaid people in Kenya Ave and similar places.

    There are a few areas where llm could be useful, things like trawling large data sets, etc, but every bit of the stuff that is being hyped as "AI" is just spam generators.

    TurtleJoe ,
    @TurtleJoe@lemmy.world avatar

    But about half of those posts are wrong, or misinformation.

    Seriously, go into any somewhat popular Reddit thread on a subject you are familiar with. There will be multiple highly upvoted parent comments going into great detail on the subject, and they will be completely wrong about all of it.

    TurtleJoe ,
    @TurtleJoe@lemmy.world avatar

    It's certainly not helping.

    We're already dealing with the problem of half the (US) population only believing things when they align with their political views and now on can't even Google something and be sure that the entire first page of results isn't SEO AI hallucinated misinformation.

    Back in the day, before streaming was a thing, there were lots of people saying that they'd gladly pay for content if it was served to them in a convenient way.

    I have a friend that is a sales manager for private planes. He said business exploded during the pandemic and then never slowed down. This despite flights being eye-wateringly expensive (like, 20k for one-way is a great deal, because you managed to book an empty leg.)

They are all a bunch of so-called "rationalist" tech-right AnCaps that justify their immense incomes through the lens of Effective Altruism, the same ideology that Sam Bankman-fried used to justify his theft of billions from his customers.
