Quantum entanglement communications also have fundamental problems that will likely render them effectively unusable. You need a key to decrypt anything you send, and the key has to travel no faster than c. It's impossible to tell the data from the noise without the key. Attempting to read the data or to change the data being sent also collapses the effect, which can only be fixed by bringing the two systems together. In short, you can only send a single packet of data and you can't use it without a key transmitted using traditional methods.

VindictiveJudge ,
@VindictiveJudge@lemmy.world avatar

The limit is c because you have to use cables, radio, or other traditional methods to send the key. The data in the entangled pair would also have to be set at the time the two devices are constructed, so that's not super useful. It might be useful for single use authentication, but that's about it.

Don't think of entanglement as being like one object in two spots. Think of it like identical twins. One twin getting a hair cut does nothing to the other twin's hair. Similarly, altering a property of one entangled particle does nothing to the other and actually means they are no longer entangled or identical.

No problem. I was pretty disappointed when I learned all the sci-fi writers were getting it wrong. Though, to be fair, it really should be called something else.

I tried explaining to a nice elderly woman that the person texting her asking to buy Steam cards wasn't actually Jason Momoa, but she couldn't be convinced. Fortunately, the manager at that store forbid anyone from selling her any gift cards of any kind.

Battle for Naboo actually had an official PC version all the way back in 2001. No idea if it works on modern PCs, though.

According to the video, game logic is still opperating at 20hz and the GPU uses frame interpolation to tripple the FPS.

Caesar was like that, too. Citizens couldn't pathfind if their life depended on it, and it sometimes did.

That reminds me of how shipping hard drives full of data is technically faster than downloading over the internet. Technically true, but almost always a poor choice in practice.

Vista was actually shockingly solid by the end. 7 on release was essentially just Vista Service Pack 3 with a new taskbar skin, because Vista was completely unmarketable by that point and nobody could be convinced to jump to Vista anymore.

Those rules depend on which denomination you're asking. The pre-schism church decided you didn't need to be Christian at all, or even monotheistic. They basically decided that rejecting god was actually a high bar (hearing about Christianity and not joining wasn't even close, and even being educated as a Christian and not believing anyway wasn't enough) and that people who were righteous would get in regardless of faith. After all, it's not your fault if you were raised in a distant land where Christianity wasn't a thing, and you couldn't really be blamed for not believing without a visitation from god himself, or an angel, or witnessing a miracle, or similar. Of course, it's easier to be righteous if you're Christian and know the rules, so spreading the faith was important. This is even still the official stance of the Vatican (and, I would assume, most Orthodox churches). A lot of the black and white morality and biblical literalism comes from Protestant factions. Definitely not all of it, though; try asking the Pope what he thinks about divorce or gay marriage.

Windows 11 Start menu ads are now rolling out to everyone (www.theverge.com)

Microsoft is starting to enable ads inside the Start menu on Windows 11 for all users. After testing these briefly with Windows Insiders earlier this month, Microsoft has started to distribute update KB5036980 to Windows 11 users this week, which includes “recommendations” for apps from the Microsoft Store in the Start menu....

I paid for 7 and upgraded it to 10. I may go to 12 later on (Windows alternates between solid and awful, so 12 may be fine) but it's also quite likely I'll wind up moving to a Linux distro as my primary and keeping Win10 as a fallback. No way in hell am I touching 11.

And definitely not worth the $2500 a year they're asking for the feature.

'Dogfighting' mostly just means air-to-air combat now. They do still make fighter jets that have guns or can mount guns, but I think they're primarily intended for surface targets rather than air targets.

Your original comment is still oddly accurate. The PS3 version was buggier than the 360 version and more prone to memory issues.

But, yeah, definitely get the PC versions of Bethesda stuff, wait for the complete edition to go on sale, then grab the unofficial patch before so much as starting the launcher the first time.

Are they all kind of the same, or do they serve different purposes?

Different performance tiers and feature sets. You could spend anywhere from $100 to $1500.

The A series has a headphone jack, but doesn't support wireless charging. Current tiers are 0, 1, 2, 5, and 7. Not every generation has a tier 7 offering. Tier 5 and 7 are close to S series performance, but much cheaper and with worse cameras.

The S series has a wireless charging, but no headphone jack. Comes in standard, plus, and ultra sizes. Better performance than the A series. All the same processor, but bigger sizes can mean more RAM, storage, and better cameras. These ones are billed as premium phones and have a premium price point.

The Fold and Flip are neat, but not generally worth the price. The Fold is better overall, but both have issues with creases. I'd generally recommend skipping the Flip. The Fold can be neat if you really want the larger screen, but an A or S series is generally a better choice.

That's the magic of setting up a local account instead of a Microsoft account and actually turning shit off during the install sequence instead of just mindlessly clicking next. That said, I'm not sure you can do first time setup on Win11 with a local account. I know Win10 made it harder later on than on release. You can still set one up after the fact, but I'm not sure how useful it is on 11 since I refuse to install it.

I know one of the ISPs in my area still runs ADSL as their only option for this town, but I never bothered asking what the speeds were.

Might be worth finding the actual router and getting the log in details from the sticker on the bottom/back and logging in to see if you can disable it.

Alternatively, plug in your own router. Probably a last resort plan, though.

They should do what kids cartoon networks have been doing for decades - run a new show for exactly three seasons, no more, no less. Be really upfront with creators that they're going to get three seasons of ten episodes each. Do that for five years and viewers will come back because they'll know shows will actually end. After that, they can start being more choosey about what they renew, but they need consumer confidence back first.

I think everyone got it out eventually, but I know they rolled it out in stages based on total karma. The more karma you had, the earlier you got the IPO email. And they didn't distinguish between post and comment karma. I had almost no post karma, but 402k comment karma (mostly from account age), so I got emailed pretty early.

I was quite pleased when I discovered that debuffs worked on bosses in Octopath. I think FF12 also just gave bosses resistance rather than immunity, so the debuffs would work eventually most of the time. Been a while since I played FF12, though, so I might be misremembering.

Seriously, the Fire Nation had mass produced internal combustion engines in ATLA. They put them in their mass produced tanks. Not to mention the fleet of ships with smokestacks indicating they probably had either diesel or steam powered ships. The Earth Kingdom and Water Tribes are both still in the process of industrializing, but the Fire Nation was already pretty much there, and the United Republic is primarily a Fire Nation breakaway state.

VindictiveJudge ,

TLOK does depict a railway network having been set up through the Earth Kingdom after the war. The Earth Kingdom as a whole is still very far behind in industrialization, though.

I think it's more that you have to purchase the item before you can agree to the EULA. That said, it's extremely rare for anyone to try and challenge them in court, and when they do they pretty much always settle so the court can't actually demand any changes to EULAs.

In the article they mentioned that they just assumed that a 4k 2 hour long movie is 14GB.

That's more what I would expect out of a 1080p movie on a disc. If I have 200TB to play with, I'm not going to care much about compressing the video any more than what the disc it originally came off of was at since artifacts could be introduced. Sure, I probably wouldn't notice most artifacts, but with that much storage even the massive 100GB rips would be a drop in the bucket so why risk it?

Could we see these as competitors to HDDs? 200TB is friggin insane, at a good price you’d be spending 2 grand on that much HDD storage.

I doubt it would compete with HDD for home use. Loading times off of optical discs are atrocious. Just archiving data, sure, but my HDDs actually still have games on them that I run. Old games, sure, but not something where more storage would be worth the reduced read/write speeds. Maybe for a home video server, but that's about it, and there's going to be some significant loading compared to current servers with HDDs.

They already did. The percentage range on your phone's battery display is basically a usable range rather than an absolute range. The article talks about phone manufacturers making changes to their charging systems to optimize battery function, but the headline bit about not charging past a certain point has been taken into account by Android and iOS for ages.
