If the whole constituency of the community that the militia protects is involved in controlling that militia,

Like having the militia answer to a democratically-elected government?

A PR disaster: Microsoft has lost trust with its users, and Windows Recall is the straw that broke the camel's back (www.windowscentral.com)

It's a nightmare scenario for Microsoft. The headlining feature of its new Copilot+ PC initiative, which is supposed to drive millions of PC sales over the next couple of years, is under significant fire for being what many say is a major breach of privacy and security on Windows. That feature in question is Windows Recall, a...

If you find a piece of media that you enjoy, be happy. You're already ahead of the game; you had a good experience and no one can take that away from you. Thing is, not everyone's going to like the things you like. Some people are going to have a bad experience with that piece of media, and they should at least be able to talk about that experience without the fans throwing a tantrum. Unfortunately, that's rarely the case.

Does the CVV number on credit cards not change when they're renewed in the USA? Or can companies still somehow charge cards without an up-to-date CVV?

How close did we come to being a footnote in the history of a future species that would happen upon our ruins ten thousand years from now? Would they indulge in the fiction of their own immortality until the Shivans came for them? And how long had this gone on? Did the Ancients stumble upon the monoliths and the tombs of their predecessors in this distant corner of space, dismissing the warnings carved into the walls of the sepulchre? And when the destroyers came at last, what did the Ancients think as they sifted the cremation of dust and bones, staring into the mute remains for a key; some solution to their plight?

What if there had been countless races stretching back into infinity? And like the nine cities of Troy each civilization had been built on the rubble of one that came before. Each annihilated by the Shivans.

The Ancients died eight thousand years ago, as humanity emerged from its neolithic infancy. They believed their voyage across the sea of stars awoke the dragon that slept beneath the waves. That the Shivans were birthed from the flux of subspace and their destruction was the revenge of an angry cosmos.

"But in general, take my advice, when you meet anything that's going to be Human and isn't yet, or used to be Human once and isn't now, or ought to be Human and isn't, you keep your eyes on it and feel for your hatchet."

And it's been less than a year since we passed the 3% mark. Linux adoption is accelerating rapidly, and that's only going to increase as its market share continues to grow and more vendors start supporting it.

Star Wars and The Hidden Fortress aren't that similar. There's some clear inspiration in some aspects, sure, particularly with the Droids, but the overall plot evolved into its own thing.

There isn't a Luke equivalent. That's kind of a big change.

No Han or Chewbacca equivalents, either.

Connected cars’ illegal data collection and use now on FTC’s “radar” (arstechnica.com)

The Federal Trade Commission's Office of Technology has issued a warning to automakers that sell connected cars. Companies that offer such products "do not have the free license to monetize people’s information beyond purposes needed to provide their requested product or service," it wrote in a blog post on Tuesday. Just...

‘My whole library is wiped out’: what it means to own movies and TV in the age of streaming services (www.theguardian.com)

*What rights do you have to the digital movies, TV shows and music you buy online? That question was on the minds of Telstra TV Box Office customers this month after the company announced it would shut down the service in June. Customers were told that unless they moved over to another service, Fetch, they would no longer be...

They could reduce the amount of paved surface, since adoption of EVs would allow some parking to be moved underground as they don't generate fumes like ICEs do. Still should be treated as a stopgap solution as we move away from car-dependemce, though.

My headcanon is that the cat assumed that it looked human up to that point and experienced a major existential crisis when it saw itself in the mirror.

X automatically changed 'Twitter' to 'X' in domain names, breaking legit URLs (mashable.com)

On Monday, it appears X attempted to encourage users to cease referring to it as Twitter and instead adopt the name X. Some users began noticing that posts viewed via X for iOS were changing any references of "Twitter.com" to "X.com" automatically....
