the only things SW fans enjoyed from Disney thus far is Mando S1-2 and Andor.

Those are all I can recommend, but I hear a lot of people liked Rogue One.

alcoholicorn ,

We'll be able to push the wolf to the left after the election!

alcoholicorn ,

Apple could have tried to work with them and said something like "We'll pay when the embargo ends", since now Kapersky has every reason to sell their next apple exploit on the black market.

They've just turned a department of people successfully working to make apple more secure into a department of people working to make it less secure.

alcoholicorn ,

Is that a falsifiable prediction?

When is it gonna hit? If it goes beyond that period, are you gonna revise your model or insist you were only off by a year, and surely it will collapse next year?

I have zero faith in Russia, but every time someone's told me <enemy of the west> is about to collapse or overthrow the government because of sanctions, and all evidence to the contrary is fabricated, they've been wrong. There's journalists and economists who've spent 30+ years saying that about China, Cuba, and Iran, who still somehow have jobs.

alcoholicorn ,

You trusted me? You fucking idiot. -Tim Apple

alcoholicorn ,

So do something else. Or indicate you will pay them when it is legal to do so. Kapersky's guy recommended Apple donate the bounty to a charity.

dictatorial hell scape like ussr or China

Life and Terror in Stalin's Russia is a great book that goes into this, a lot of the terror during that period was not Stalin personally going around and shooting every peasant who had more than 5 rubles to his name (during the rare moments he wasn't personally eating everyone's grain). Rather it was the people using the new system to settle old scores or for personal advancement.

The book doesn't cover the period between 1917 and 1923, or the Hundred Flowers Campaign in China, but you can see similar sentiment in transcripts and letters when Lenin, Mao, et al look at how many people had gotten into the party entirely for the purpose of abusing their positions for personal gain.

At a very general level, we can infer any socialist country is more democratic after the revolution based on the fact that the government pursues the interests of the people more than it did before the revolution.

In Cuba for instance, their last constitutional referendum had a 90% approval rating. Do you think that happened by chance, or that you are simply unaware of/trained not to recognize how the people determine the actions of the state?

I'm not watching a youtube video.

Did they build a system of oppression

No, such a system already existed, evidenced by the famines, massacres, etc that happened almost yearly in China and Russia before the revolutions.

What I'm getting at is that while the post-revolution states weren't utopias, they were far better than what came before. Telling people otherwise only serves to prolong the status quo.

Also they kinda did have a government ready to go in the case of the USSR, the Soviets.

simultaneously shutting down the mechanisms by which workers could have power over their own lives

Except they had and used those mechanisms, as evidenced by the massive improvements to the average person's lives after the revolution.

the absurd strawman that people think he did anything personally

Apologies, typically when I see people doing anti-communism use the term dictatorial, they mean a single person exercising absolute power. Though I don't understand why you'd consider a dictatorship of the working class "hell".

alcoholicorn ,

The way they feed you information is patronizingly slow, and while I'm not expecting a widely cited academic paper published in a reputable journal, Youtube essays are one step below shitposts on internet forums in trustworthiness and academic rigor.

There's also a bigger picture with Tank Man, that shows the mostly empty square the tanks were leaving, with a handful of soldiers and bikes.

And a bunch of other photos showing the battle that took place in the surrounding streets, with cops that had been lynched and burned and protesters gunned down.

The evidence disproves the western narrative of tanks machine-gunning protesters inside the square, then liquefying bodies, that were then burnt and washed down the drain (and getting stopped by Tank Man on the way out).

That's not to say the Chinese claims should be taken at face value, but nothing I've seen contradicts their claim of 300 dead and several thousand wounded.

all large projects have this level of corruption and grift

Skill issue. I can't even blame capitalism, since the french manage to get almost 90% of their power from nuclear.

China has 53 GW installed, 25 GW under construction, and another 47 GW planned. Generally they're pretty clear-eyed when it comes to major projects like this, so I think we can infer the availability of cheap hydro and solar doesn't favor doing more than ~15% nuclear since they're only planning to increase it by 150% over the next couple decades.

Maybe that will change when they set up long term storage/reprocessing.

    alcoholicorn ,

having to buy the radioactive materials from dictatorships

Not really, but also kinda. The biggest exporters of ore are Kazakhstan, Namibia, Canada, and Australia.

The only major producers that aren't American puppets stripping themselves of resources to maintain western hegemony are Russia, Niger, China, and India, who total less than 15%.

I wouldn't call Russia or India not-dictatorships, but I don't see them using US weapons and training to put down a restive population and keep the resources and money flowing out like Kazakstan.

    alcoholicorn ,

Off by a factor of 1000. That's why I'm not a nuclear engineer.

    alcoholicorn ,

So what happens if some Danish military bases get bombed or a frigate gets sunk with dozens of dead? Does Denmark pull back or call for WWIII?

    alcoholicorn ,

When you say nordic countries, you mean sweden, norway, and finland would do a massive escalation, and open themselves up to retaliation? Surely they'd do the calculus and see there's nothing to gain and a lot to lose? I've heard the political situation in the EU was not great, but I expect that kind of hawkishness here on the other side of the planet, not from the countries that actually stand to lose anything.

    alcoholicorn ,

There's a difference between a few humans throwing some rocks at something's head and poking it with a sharp stick and what chimps do.

    alcoholicorn ,

In scale? Yes. In brutality? Go look up chimp attacks.

    alcoholicorn ,

Yeah the context is that many indigenous people depended on the buffalo for food.

It was basically the same as when Israel pours concrete down wells and burns olive groves that took centuries to get that productive. They knew for every buffalo they killed, an indian would starve.

That image is similar to the rooms full of luggage in Auschwitz in what it represents.

    alcoholicorn ,

The guys who fund terrorists and dictatorships all over the world are important to global stability, but not in the way you think.

    alcoholicorn ,

Wtf? The guy who blew up the general who beat ISIS while he was on a peace mission in a third country? The guy who escalated the drone warfare across Iraq and Syria? Who escalated the trade war with China?

No, America did not stop being an evil empire or start being good for global stability under Trump.

    alcoholicorn ,

You were implying Trump was good because the US is bad, but Trump's foreign policy was as destructive as every other presidents.

    alcoholicorn ,

They were more like paramilitary than militia since they employed armored cars, tanks, and aircraft from the regular military of Weimar Germany when needed.

    alcoholicorn ,

Of course this didn’t pan out. 2-3 huge tech companies rushed onto the market with somewhat crappy products just to own the patents so smaller companies couldn’t innovate. When they weren’t immediately profitable they started cutting back and shutting down.

The way advanced capitalism can't even grow a product before trying to strangle it for every last penny is all that saves us from special Black Mirror levels of hell.

    alcoholicorn ,

Telling the DNC that you and most people will vote for him unconditionally is sabotaging his chances; the dems need to understand they cannot win if they continue the path they're on, and telling them otherwise is counterproductive.

Silencing criticism of millions isn't gonna win an election. Doing the things the people whose votes you need are telling you to do will.

    alcoholicorn ,

What's the chance Starmer does 80% of what the Tories would have done, then the Tories get a supermajority next election?

I'm just an American, so IDK, but I've seen two democratic majorities in my lifetime, both of which played out that way.

    alcoholicorn ,

Please don't fedpost, they actually have people who investigate this shit.

    alcoholicorn ,

I don't like the green party, they basically go away except for a publicity campaign once every 4 years.

PSL is constantly putting in work and has been at nearly every student protest.

    alcoholicorn ,

Yeah, but they're listening to public sentiment.

If public sentiment is "everyone's gonna vote for Biden no matter what", they're not gonna change the course, and then be shocked when they get blown out worse than they did in 2016.

    alcoholicorn , (edited )

If and when Biden deals with Gaza, everyone with this mindset immediately needs to turn around and start sucking off Biden with previously unseen vigor and determination, otherwise this is only going to damage his chance of being elected.

There's tens of thousands of mostly children dead, and Israel is using famine and disease to wipe out the rest, no shit it damages Biden's chances if his actions come this late. Especially if Biden's answer to Gaza is ship Israel weapons more quietly while claiming to hold up shipments, while Israel starves Gaza out.

Then again, if Biden stops the money and arms to Israel, and sanctions Israel, and Trump responds by promising money and arms to Israel so they can resume the genocide, I don't see how anyone could not vote Biden.

    alcoholicorn ,

What more can be done? We are already sending 100% of the weapons, money, and diplomatic support Israel needs. We're already bombing Yemen for taking actions to stop Israel and shooting down Iranian drones trying to stop them. Is Trump going to do the same thing, but be proud of it?
Shit I can't even say that, Biden is extremely proud of his support for Israel. Trump is simply going to be more obnoxious about it.

Lesser evilism isn't gonna win an election when your lesser evil is already genocide.

    alcoholicorn ,

Israel has nukes. They're not using them, or chemical weapons because it would be sanctioned to an extent that even the US couldn't help them.

Israel actions are not limited by the size of the bombs they're being given.

Reminder that almost 10 years ago, Reddit accidentally released that their most "reddit-addicted" city was Eglin Airforce Base, which has multiple Cyberspace units.

If any government is trying to influence you on an american-based english-speaking websites, it's the American government.

    alcoholicorn ,

Sure, and I bet you think the NSA only spies on foreigners.

    alcoholicorn , (edited )

The idea that the US gov't doesn't propagandize the US people is just so laughable and observably false.

The most popular non-sports video game series is US propaganda. The most funded Hollywood movies, Marvel et al, has the military literally approve the scripts beforehand.

Reddit's current Director of Policy worked the Atlantic Council and had no experience in social media before working for Reddit and purging it of popular leftist communities. After October 7th, they put out a message banning war footage or propaganda showing the Palestinian perspective.

Notice how Reddit is overwhelmingly pro-Ukraine, anti-russian, anti-Iranian, anti-chinese, and pro-zionist? Literally zero difference between what the major subreddits support and what the state department would want them to support.

    alcoholicorn ,

Oh fuck off with that, I read your post, the point you were making was that the US propaganda operations must not be bigger than other countries because it is "piss poor" if it exists. I gave you evidence of its existence and its effectiveness.

Respond to the core point, or any of the evidence that the US has bigger propaganda operations directed at the US than any other country could possibly manage and quit squirming.

    alcoholicorn ,

When someone restates the points of your arguments, that's not dishonesty.

This is useless, nothing I say is going to get around your quibbling.

    alcoholicorn ,

You'd be dismayed by how many people don't even have that scruple, as long as it's happening in the third world.

Social democracy is objectively the moderate wing of fascism after all.

    alcoholicorn ,

Social democracy maintains that very exploitation. There is little disagreement among liberals when it comes to the exploitation of the third world.

You want food stuffs that don't involve slavery? End neocolonialism.

    alcoholicorn ,

That said, when I mentioned “keeping the democracies of the Western world functioning”

Most of those "democracies" are dictatorships of capital who depend on the exploitation of the third world to maintain a standard of living at home, the essence of social democracy. Maintaining them isn't a good thing.

I think you are perhaps not listening to the right set of liberals

I think you are not looking at the history of their actions or reading between the lines. The sales of weapons to western-backed dictatorships for the purpose of putting down restive populations in the event they try to rise up don't stop when a democrat is in charge.

    alcoholicorn , (edited )

just let America fall… right into the hands of Putin?

lmao you think Russia is capable of invading America? You understand Call of Duty games are fiction right? Modern day Russia can barely take the russian-speaking part of Ukraine, and saw a hostile Ukraine as such an existential threat they went to near total war.

make their own empires, and directly subvert their governments by installing themselves a literal emperor?

They go to re-education camps and then get real jobs.

Or they don't, historically speaking, it's up to them.

And if not, what then - China just takes over the world by default?

From the french revolution to slavery to segregation to the Russian and Chinese revolutions to apartheid, in every instance the privileged assured everyone else that they would be just as brutal and cruel to them as they were to the oppressed class. They've been wrong every time. The indigenous people of the Americas and Africa are not waiting to put you in camps and erase your language or sell your drinking water to richer countries.

    alcoholicorn ,

Civil Disobedience is the opposite of this.

    alcoholicorn ,

No, this is just rioting. That's not to say rioting is bad, it got redlining and segregated neighborhoods banned, and is an important part of peaceful demonstrations, as it shows what the consequences will be if they don't give into your demands.

    alcoholicorn ,

What hidden value judgement? I pointed out that rioting or other violent action, or at least the credible threat of, is necessary for any progress.
