OneDrive automatically backups folders in Windows 11 without users' permissions (windowsreport.com)

According to the latest reports, Windows 11 has made an independent choice by automatically turning on OneDrive folder backup for Desktop, Pictures, Documents, Music, and Video folders without your permission. This signifies that, whether you approve or not, everything is becoming coordinated with the cloud....

Microsoft is an abusive ex. It will keep abusing you because it knows no other way. You can waste your days trying to fight against it, trying to figure out how to disable and remove whatever new privacy invasive anti-consumer bloat Microsoft decides to roll out that Tuesday.

Or you can leave and switch to Linux and waste time there instead. Tux is all about that respect and is handsome to boot. He might be a bit sensitive and break down rarely so you might need to spare a few to make sure he's ok, but it's nothing a little love can't handle. And he's only going to get better and stronger as he grows. You might even look forward to receiving updates (wow, I know). A stark contrast from your abusive ex.

Amazon had also appointed a former NSA director. Actually, it was Snowden's director.

Ads have definitely added more load on electrical grids in aggregate than locally hosted and lightweight models, especially given that ads are fucking everywhere all the time. Websites, apps, the servers, even 24/7 electric billboards. I'm not worried about a few nerds using slightly more electricity sometimes for their own benefit and joy (it's still less power than gaming), as opposed to a corp that burns through power and breaks their climate pledges (Microsoft) for the benefit of their bottom line and nothing else. Corps don't get to have a monopoly on AI that was built with our data, only to have it fed back to us to pull more data and siphon more money.

So basically fuck Google and fuck ads.

archchan ,
@archchan@lemmy.ml avatar

So... Mastodon integration instead I hope?

It's not just European elites who are afraid of upheaval. It's all of them. It's one of the reasons why they all have bunkers, why Zuckerberg is building another one in Hawaii recently. They know that we can actually do something about them because we outnumber them by a lot, so they build these systems of control. Governments, corps, elites have all become noticeably more brazen in the past several years.

archchan ,
@archchan@lemmy.ml avatar

I admire your conviction. But in that case we also have to consider how your right to move about freely is being affected. If you feel like you need to choose not to travel when you want or need to travel, how will you reconcile? Do you weigh and choose the lesser evil? Seems like you just end up violated one way or another. I don't like it, not any of this.

Pretty sure they already said it would be opt-in. This is just planned damage control. The fools have already shown their hand. Again.

I've gone off the FOSS deep end so it doesn't stop when I see Windows used in the wild.

The longer I'm here, the more I recoil at the sight of people using products from Google so casually and thoughtlessly.

I'll feel visceral disgust when I see the soulless, dystopian corporate logos of Xitter, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, etc that wormed their way into a universal presence on social footers of websites or promotional emails or search engines... and everyone's locked down devices, sucking up troves of data to map who you are, were, and will be. Even McFuckingDonalds has a clause in a policy saying they'll measure your intelligence.

The greater the intersect between emotions felt while enjoying a cautionary fictional cyberpunk tale and those felt while experiencing reality... well, anyway you get the idea.

Tldr I need a hug from a penguin or cocaine from a bear or something holy shit

You, reader, go. Hug a penguin. Spread love to the world. Believe in the change you want to see. Be good to each other. And don't let anyone or anything take who you are, were, or can be away from you, be it a corp, a government, or a bad day.

Have a good day

A social app for creatives, Cara grew from 40k to 650k users in a week because artists are fed up with Meta’s AI policies | TechCrunch (techcrunch.com)

Artists have finally had enough with Meta’s predatory AI policies, but Meta’s loss is Cara’s gain. An artist-run, anti-AI social platform, Cara has grown from 40,000 to 650,000 users within the last week, catapulting it to the top of the App Store charts....

I hate that Pixelfed isn't good enough to capture these users and I say this as someone who uses it over Instagram.

From the what I've seen (and I have been watching fairly closely), I think Pixelfed and the stretched-too-thin-can't-prioritize-and-somewhat-monarchial dev himself might just need more time to cook. I still have hope in him and his projects but I won't be holding my breath again. If good shit happens, it happens. And I do hope it happens because it should've been Pixelfed in this article like Mastodon was with Twitter or Lemmy with Reddit. Not whatever this new corp that came out of nowhere is.

He's not even the FCC chairman anymore but this news still makes me want to punch Ajit Pai in the face.

archchan ,

I choose to privately self-host open source AI models and stuff on Linux. It's almost like technology is a tool and corps are the ones fucking things up. Hmmm, imagine that.

If consent mattered, governments and corporations all around the world wouldn't be pushing to expand the global surveillance apparatus.

Is this just another Tuesday now? Fuck me.

Decentralized Systems Will Be Necessary To Stop Google From Putting The Web Into Managed Decline (www.techdirt.com)

Is Google signaling the end of the open web? That’s some of the concern raised by its new embrace of AI. While most of the fears about AI may be overblown, this one could be legit. But it doesn’t mean that we need to accept it....

archchan ,
@archchan@lemmy.ml avatar

World's most popular search engine, video platform, mobile OS, browser engine, email provider, map provider, shall I go on? Search results at this point are just becoming an astrix.

They're trying to suck up and present as much data as possible so people never have to leave Google's services. They want to be the internet. If you enabled people to be independent, private, decentralized, and open, then Google would be in trouble because suddenly individuals and communities would have all the power and data, not some corp that's hellbent on wasting your lifespan and brain space with ads or whatever other garbage decision they make on Tuesday to make their line go up.

archchan ,
@archchan@lemmy.ml avatar

It's not going to get better. I nuked 10 and switched to Linux permanently around the Windows 11 launch. My only regret is not switching sooner, like around Windows 8 times.

archchan ,
@archchan@lemmy.ml avatar

There's a pattern of belief among the rich and powerful that is basically like, "people don't actually know what they want. They think they do but what they actually want is different, even if they don't recognize it." When they say "this is what you want" they think they're giving us the thing we actually want. They believe what they're saying.

I find that to be equal parts fascinating and terrifying.

I'm out of the loop. What is Roblox actually?

archchan ,
@archchan@lemmy.ml avatar

It will also come with an open source "For You" algorithm. I've been wishing the fediverse do this since I joined and it took literally banning TikTok for it to happen in the span of a few months by dansup for Loops, who thankfully has a favorable outlook on the use of algorithms on the fediverse.

archchan ,
@archchan@lemmy.ml avatar

Stretched too thin is an understatement.

Between Pixelfed, Sup, Loops, FediDB, fediverse.info, PubKit, all that comes with developing those, his main job, and whatever else he has cooking, I don't like being so heavily dependent on the whims of one dev. I have mad respect for him and everything he has done, but this situation is definitely limiting the growth of the platforms, contributions to those platforms, and his general decision making on what to develop and how to prioritize.

I try to be optimistic because in the end what he's doing is a net positive, but we're going to need more than one man's raw coding talent. That's why although I'm exited for Loops, I'm tempering my expectations and expecting a cap on the popularity and adoption of Loops like with Pixelfed unless something changes.

Remember the NSA director back when all the Snowden stuff happened? Keith Alexander? He joined Amazon's board of directors in 2020. Not to mention Bezos is a particular fan of the DoD and was on the Pentagon's advisory board.

Why anyone would trust Amazon is beyond me. And I don't like feeling so damn watched just for walking down a street with a bunch of Ring cameras. I can't believe it's so normalized to constantly watch your neighbors with a corps eyeballs.

    That's why big tech pays the big bucks to be the "default"

    archchan ,
    @archchan@lemmy.ml avatar

    Maybe unpopular opinion but I like connected stuff. I like what you can do with modern tech. I think it's cool to have a coffee maker or something hooked up to Home Assistant so you can start a brew from your phone when you wake up.

    What I don't like is when I can't control the tech. The only way I'd ever allow smart appliances is if the data never left my network and I took reasonable steps to ensure the IOT devices are isolated and secured.

    Always have been, and they're in it for the long game. They've already acquired a stupid amount of control on the web and web standards with everything from Chromium to Youtube, not to mention it doesn't help that they basically control the world's most popular mobile OS. Google wants it all if we let them.
