The self healing part is for scratches on the inner screen. Since the inner screen can't be made of glass, it's prone to scratches.

iPhones And Androids Can Now Warn You of 'Secret Trackers' (www.ibtimes.co.uk)

In a collaborative effort, Apple and Google have developed an industry-standard detection feature called "Detecting Unwanted Location Trackers" (DULT) for Bluetooth trackers. This standard allows users on iOS and Android devices to be alerted if an unknown Bluetooth tracker is monitoring their location.

I'm guessing they mean using it as an anti-theft device. If a thief steals an item with a tracker in it, they'll be notified of the tracker's presence by their phone and remove it. Of course, these trackers aren't anti-theft devices and you probably shouldn't use them to try confronting a thief on your own anyway...

ARM is the licensor, not the licensee. At the very least, they are willing to license the ARM architecture to more companies (the licensees) than Intel is with x86. More RISC-V support would be ideal though for sure...

I still can't connect my 360hz monitor and 165hz monitor and get HDR at the same time in Linux. Only two of these things work at once. Hoping the eventual new Nvidia drivers fix that, but otherwise I'm out of ideas.

It's not distributed by Microsoft either, it's distributed by Win.rar GmbH from their own website. The developers made it only for Windows, but that doesn't mean Microsoft played any part in it. Windows is the most widely used desktop OS, especially in business environments, and selling to businesses is where WinRAR makes their money.

Also, 7zip 4 lyfe

Why doesn't this already work the way I would expect? You can plug your smartphone into your PC and access its entire filesystem, and they're basically both computers. Why can't this work the same way between PCs? Or why can't I access my PC's files from my phone?

Squarespace to Go Private in $6.9B All-Cash Transaction with Permira (investors.squarespace.com)

It's not a good ratio, but assuming they managed to fill the three developer positions they were intending to when this interview was given last year and no one has left since then, that's 5 full time employees to 5 board members. I can't find more up-to-date numbers on the employee count unfortunately.

    Trying to pass this clone off as an "update" to actual Wikipedia lol

    I've gotten very used to the amount of content on here and using the different sorting options to find active discussion. It's not even close to the amount of content on Reddit, but that's not a bad thing imo.

    I don't understand, was making an account on Lemmy difficult? I have a Lemmy.world account as well and making an account was super easy. Maybe you'd like Kbin or Mbin better?

    What I did for my first build was:

    1. Buy a 4070 Super
    2. Look up a parts list / build guide for that card
    3. Buy the case from the list
    4. Absolutely wing it for everything else
    5. Helldivers 2 baybeeeee

    My CPU is bald

    atocci ,
    @atocci@kbin.social avatar

    Sad, random mutations due to a limited gene pool have left the majority of the CPU population without their natural spiny deterrent. Soon, CPUs will be unable to survive in the wild as their lack of a defense mechanism makes them easy targets for predators and their populations will begin to dwindle.

    I am having lots of fun with Palworld, but through GamePass because I can't bring myself to buy it. It didn't sit right with me that the PC GamePass version of the game is lacking features that the Steam version has. This limits me to only playing with my one Xbox friend, but I don't feel like buying yet another early access game.

    There was a 4chan "leak" a while back that claimed Pokemon S/V would also be receiving an upgrade for the next console. I can't remember what other things were claimed though, so it might just be totally fake.

    My monitor is only 1440p, so it's just what i need. I ordered the Founders Edition card from Best Buy on a whim after I stumbled across it at launch time by coincidence. I'd been mulling over the idea of getting a prebuilt PC to replace my laptop for a few weeks at that point and was on the lookout for sales on ones with a 4070. Guess I'll be building my own instead now.

    Oh glad to know I'm not the only one. There's a song that plays often at work that I'm just dying to know the name of but every time I try, Google tells me it's unable to connect.

    It's not great! 2023 games that I have really enjoyed this past year have been Tears of the Kingdom, Cassette Beasts, and Hi-Fi Rush.

    atocci ,
    @atocci@kbin.social avatar

    I'm curious considering it's currently at 96% positive, what about the reviews drove you away? For me, the game captured the feeling of playing Pokemon for the first time (Heart Gold) again. It was similar enough on a basic level to draw me in, but all the fundamentals and mechanics are totally different and bring a wave of fresh air to the stale Pokemon formula.

    If you've played Pokemon on the DS and didn't like it, this game probably won't be your kind of thing. If you did though, Cassette Beasts has a lot going for it. It has creative monster designs, a cast of unique side characters with their own story quests, a very memorable soundtrack (including my most played song of 2023), a not-overwhelmingly-massive open world with plenty to do, and just a smidge of analog horror.

    I have ~30 hours in it iirc.

    Limited means the instance has done something not quite to the level of total defederation, but still limits the presence of Threads users. For example, making it so you can only see a Threads user if you actively search for and follow them, removing all Threads content from the global feed by default, preventing Threads users from following your users, etc.

    "Fedipact" means that the admin of that instance has signed on to the informal agreement of the same name between instances that pledged to defederate from Threads preemptively.

    atocci ,
    @atocci@kbin.social avatar

    There is an assumption that any changes or additions Threads may make to their implementation of ActivityPub beyond the official spec will break compatibility with other instances. It won't though, that's the point I was trying to make above.

    Any additions they may want to make can absolutly be added on top of the existing official spec without breaking compatibility. Lemmy has downvotes but can still read comments and posts by Mastodon users. Mastodon users can post to Lemmy communities. You can see Pixelfed pictures on Kbin. Kbin posts can be read on Misskey. Misskey posts are visible on Mastodon.

    All of these services have features that don't exist elsewhere, built outside of the existing spec, but the core content is all interoperable. Anything Threads may want to add can be done without destroying spec compatibility. Sure, they could still make a change that intentionally breaks compatibility, but why would they? Theres nothing in it for them. No one who's here is going to leave just because the Threads users are gone. The Threads users are already absent and we're all still here.

    Don't forget this report is for 2022, not 2023. The grant for 2023 might be closer to the 2021 level since they're back in patron tier. I can only speculate on what their interests in Cycles is, but maybe they use Blender for making ads and such.

    I'm sure their open source contributions aren't out of charity though. They're getting a return on their investment somehow, even if only in the things they use the projects for. I think the open source work would be a better comparison for their ActivityPub integration either way though.
