Beijing intervenes in China’s solar industry as overcapacity dries up profit in the country's domestic market

China’s energy regulator said it will limit “low-end” solar panel manufacturing after industry leaders called for more government intervention earlier this month. The move is an acknowledgement by Beijing that solar panel overcapacity is a problem, one that has pushed Chinese solar firms into a price war and shriveled...

Same as EVs, it will be deemed as too competitive and tarifs will make those too expensive for poor people because fuck poor people.

100k sites ignored dependency risks

JS: typing systems are boring, warnings are boring, security is boring.

best_username_ever ,

You're confused. It's unrelated to package managers, it's about basic security principles like this: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/Security/Subresource_Integrity but JS devs don't care.

best_username_ever ,

Where is the technology? Is it because they used a computer?

best_username_ever ,

A strange source has found a few shitty generated memes. That's not journalism at all.

best_username_ever ,

What’s a cager? I can’t give up my car because I can’t bike to work, buses go way too fast on the highway which is dangerous and illegal, and I don’t earn enough to buy an EV or to relocate near my job.

You must understand that poor people can’t live in the EV utopia right now. Car makers will have to sell small and cheap EVs.

best_username_ever , (edited )

My car cost 10k€, the equivalent EV is 20k€. Why don’t I buy more EVs? That’s a mystery, let’s call McKinsey to understand why.

Also let’s double the price of more affordable foreign cars to increase the amount of mystery. Sometimes I wonder if governments do this to make fun of us because it’s so stupid.

best_username_ever ,

Movies are shown to the public. It doesn’t mean I can copy them for free.

best_username_ever ,

I hope it’s not 200€ but it’s way higher than what I pay for the gas.

best_username_ever ,

Even when I don’t use it? How is it acceptable?

There’s nothing Tanenbaum could do

Tanenbaum doesn’t seem to mind

Today OP was very dumb and showed his ignorance of the concept "I do whatever I fucking want." Don't be like OP.

people regretting releasing their work under a permissive license

They're free to change the licence of future versions. OP also failed at understanding the concept of licences. He's such a silly moron!

best_username_ever ,

that would limit my own option to make a version of the software and sell it under a more limited license in the future

Nope. As the author you're free to license your stuff however you want. You can use 10 different licenses for 10 clients if you want. You could write a custom version of your application and give a non-free license to a specific client if you want.

IIRC, it's controlled by the carrier and not encrypted. If that's the case, it's bad. We've been moving away from carriers and internet providers, and got some privacy back by various means. Why would be roll that back?

I banned my daughter from using the iPhone she bought. It made her a better person | Em Rio (www.theguardian.com)

I think its not just kids anymore, it's adults too. Everyone is glued to their screens these days. But kids are more vulnerable to influences from "social" media and don't have any defences to the psychological warfare going on. Of course they feel like shit.

best_username_ever ,

social media

An anonymous forum without any shitty algorithm.

My last brand new Pixel phone had debug strings in the user interface and the UI was not responsive. It’s the daily annoyances and details that made me get an iPhone. Comparisons have been stupid since the beginning of smartphones.

offline on a computer with a MS account

That's technically impossible because you must create an account... online. Also it's a Microsoft account which is worse.

best_username_ever ,

How would Apple technically know that nothing is stored? Even if IPs are hidden, the questions and answers are still useful for OpenAI.

Microsoft's new Paint Cocreator requires an NPU — AI-powered feature requires 40 TOPS of performance and a Microsoft account (www.tomshardware.com)

Microsoft quietly added a new AI feature, called Cocreator, into its raster graphics editor included in every version of Windows since 1985. You need a Copilot + PC with an NPU that can deliver 40 TOPS or better to use it. So, you need to shell out at least $1,099 to get one of the new Snapdragon X Windows Copilot+ PCs that...

best_username_ever ,

It definitely is. Microsoft said that open source is bad cancer.

best_username_ever ,

It's not only Americans though. French car makers also sell big SUVs to everyone because it's very important to have the biggest car ever when you bring back a small bag of groceries, or when you desperately need to be on top of the world in the traffic jams. I see those morons every day and it saddens me.

best_username_ever ,

Nope, it's over since the invention of SUVs and leasing cars. Nowadays everyone has a big car or an expensive car.

best_username_ever ,

schools teach how to use cell phones

If you were serious, your country is in deep shit.

best_username_ever ,

Reading books worked fine for a few thousand years.

iPhone have content blockers but those are paid applications. Mullvad (the paid VPN) has a custom DNS to filter that kind of shit (ads, trackers, gambling, social media, etc.) and it's so effective that I can't read Facebook or Twitter anymore. Or you have custom DNS like https://quad9.net/ but I'm not sure if they do block ads.

best_username_ever ,

I buy FLAC files on Bandcamp. I have the highest quality at a cheap price, and it hopefully won’t rot if stored properly on my NAS.

best_username_ever ,

Oh god, Windows IoT is the real-time version used for robots in the medical industry or serious stuff. This is overkill.

best_username_ever ,

"Resource forks" IIRC, old stuff. Same for the .DS_Store file.

best_username_ever ,

Try medical software and devices. The requirements and specs are mandatory before doing anything. It’s actually very fun and I have less burnout thanks to this.

best_username_ever ,

my account

I wasn’t the owner

You are the owner. For Apple, your IT department is the thief.

best_username_ever ,

The owner of the account owns the device. It’s a standard on all smartphones and tablets for the past 10 years.

best_username_ever ,

Zoom CEO is obviously an idiot. Who listens to those people?

best_username_ever ,

without knowing anything about their situation

Most people only need LibreOffice and Firefox.

best_username_ever ,

Indeed is an alternative but I never used it.

The tech that exists so far haven't had the potential to replace every job on earth, that's the real difference for me.

best_username_ever ,

According to some people (who have never programmed and don't know what AI can do), we will all be able to retire with a lot of money and we'll all write poetry and become painters or make music and have fun. It's not realistic and it won't happen.

The only positive thing that AI can do is detect bad stuff in the human body before a surgery as long as it's validated by a professional. I could throw everything else in the trash as it's meant to replace humans forever.

best_username_ever ,

Everything is an issue if you try hard enough. Feel free to fork and rename if you’re not happy. You seem to have a lot of time to waste.

best_username_ever ,

N26 is not a bank though. It would be interesting to see the difference with a real bank.

best_username_ever ,

but

No "but," it's plain xenophobia, no debate about it.

best_username_ever ,

Why is the USA the only country to have those problems, AND complain about getting free stuff?

best_username_ever ,

I guess a timezone difference too since I never see any ads.

best_username_ever , (edited )

FLAC is supposed to be way smaller: https://hbfs.wordpress.com/2012/02/07/looking-at-flac-compression-ratios/

I use Opus at 192 kbps. It's overkill but it should be almost perfect and has the size of an MP4.

best_username_ever ,

It’s not the old program anymore, and it already leaked a long time ago. It was obvious that the new one wouldn’t be open.

best_username_ever ,

It's at best abandonware, but the source will never be released officially as it now belongs to a random megacorp.

best_username_ever ,

You obviously haven’t used the web3 nocode blockchain NFT AI enough to have an informed opinion.

best_username_ever ,

I try ChatGPT and others once every month to see if they improve my programming experience. Yesterday I got fake functions that do no exist, again. I’ll try next month.

best_username_ever ,

Here is the problem that won’t change for me or my coworkers : we will never use GitHub and our source code is very private (medical devices or worse).

Also I asked a question that didn’t need any context or codebase. It was about a public API from an open-source project. It hallucinated a lot and failed.

Last but not least, I never needed an autocomplete on steroids. I would enjoy some kind of agent that can give precise answers on specific topics, but I understand that LLMs may never provide this.

I just cringe a lot when programmers tell me to use a tool that obviously can’t and will never be able to give me those answers.

I'm really annoyed by how much Brave Search is pushing AI

I've been using Brave Search supplemented by Startpage for the past 2+ years. When I search for something, I want to get results for credible webpages, not a summary of unknown quality. I liked the previous AI inclusion because it was instant, didn't take up much space, and I could quickly navigate to the websites referenced in...

best_username_ever ,

I tried it a long time ago and found out that they were injecting links to their shitcoins inside the web pages. Like, additional links in some web sites.

I’m still dumbfounded that there was not more protests about it because it should never happen.
