Large scale data centers, like the ones that end up in the news for FAANG are ~100 megawatt footprints.

I have no idea where you're getting 3.4 megawatts as the largest data center in the US, but that is wildly undersized.

Sweet hat, I like fried chicken to.

Without any additional context, this is the greatest sentence I've ever read.

leave half a million in RSUs

I'm not sure if it's intentionally being left out here, but if you have half a million in unvested stock, any competing offer from another FAANG company is likely giving you a stock match, or at least somewhere close to match.

The golden handcuffs aren't as tight as people make them seem.

Google's operations are absolutely built around the idea of easy rollback. Their products, and the their entire product ecosystem, are not.

bitwaba ,

There's the old adage that "if everything hurts when you poke it your finger is broken"

I feel Iike the correct application of this analogy here is "if everyone you examine is a bastard, you're the bastard."

bitwaba ,

That's reasonable, but you're forgetting the part where the CEOs don't want to be the CEO anymore. They've got billions and want to spend it doing shit like wifi weather balloons or self driving cars. So they look for someone to replace them, and that replacement doesn't have the tenure in the position to say "stop the bullshit, I want good products, not half baked 'revenue generators'".

But they do have an army of MBAs in the CFOs office telling them quarterly ad revenue is down 3% year over year, which means the world is ending, so they need to pump those numbers while everyone cashes out their stock before the rest of the stock holders realize the plan is to leave them now holding the bag for the now worthless-page-of-ads-before-search-results company.

bitwaba ,

Whatever happened to that?

He took all the money he was going to use to do that, put it in a duffelbag with X written on the side, and burned it.

Instagram Advertises Nonconsensual AI Nude Apps (www.404media.co)

Instagram is profiting from several ads that invite people to create nonconsensual nude images with AI image generation apps, once again showing that some of the most harmful applications of AI tools are not hidden on the dark corners of the internet, but are actively promoted to users by social media companies unable or...

I don't know, I kind of like the idea of someone deciding their company motto is to not exist at all.

I choose to believe those tankies are doing the same, and it's just one tankie you're arguing with. In fact all tankies arguments on Lemmy are just at argument between you and other said tankie dude on new accounts.

He was asking for reasons to not use Arch... Installing by hand is (more than)half the fun.

bitwaba , (edited )

It says that in the article

Edit: not really sure why I got downvoted. The whole article is like 20 sentences. This isn't some kind of high brow journalism. The whole thing takes less than a minute to read.

Is this "Wayland changed the way screen sharing works, which broke slack and everything else that does screen share" or "I've gotten screensharing working with everything else but it's still broken in slack"?

I don't use slack so I'm not sure what the specific issue is, but I remember having to install additional packages on Arch (BTW) to get screen sharing working in Plasma (my three use cases being discord, Google meet, and steam remote play).

As an intermedia Linux user prior to making the jump 2 years ago, if you mainly game on Steam you're fine. Wine and Proton are mature developed now that most games 'just work'. Almost all the problems I've run into for gaming on Linux have come from trying to do something outside steam (although Blizzard and Activision games seem to be pretty low effort).

Once you get outside that, it's hit or miss (sometimes good hits. Sometimes bad misses).

What you'll have to say goodbye to is alphas, betas, and release weekends. They CAN function (I did all 3 Diablo 4 beta weekends last year with no issues at all), and there's plenty of early access stuff on steam that works fine even though the developers didn't care about Linux one bit. But usually if you're reporting issues on opening weekend for a new game, they're more concerned with making their game launch work for the 95%+ of users instead of the 5%. If you want stuff to 'just work' and don't want to spend your weekend tinkering with waiting for hot fixes or patches, you'll probably not want to make the switch. Or will want to change your mentality about which games you play and when.

That being said, the experience is constantly getting better. So in a year or two it may be a different story.

Pffffft, this guy can't recite "Forgot about Dre" from memory...

2G, 3G, 4G, 5G mobile data made some sense as it represents generational leaps in the technology itself but then Xfinity wants to advertise "10g" internet...

Comcast says it represents a 10 Gigabit cable internet network they are building (it doesn’t exist) so they are basically changing the meaning of the g from generation to gig to act like 10g is 5 generations better (or twice as fast)…or that they have a 10 gigabit network. Neither is accurate. It’s still just cable...

Well, my personal options on literally are that it is not being used to mean figuratively, it is being used in a figurative manner for weight and effect. The same way that yeah and right are both positive/agreement words, but can be used in a figurative manner to mean the opposite. If someone says "they turned the frogs gay!" And someone responds "riiiiiiiiiight....", right still means "that statement is correct" but it was used with an inflection that implies the opposite. That doesn't mean the dictionary definition of right now needs to be updated to fall in line with 21st century sarcastic smart ass linguistics.

So, I dont actually think the definition of literally has changed, and I disagree with any dictionary that says it has and now needs to include an additional definition of the word that means the opposite.

The reason I was asking is because you, like me, seem to care about this more than the average person. So I was curious of your thought on the matter in hopes that I might gain some additional insight on the matter that I didn't have before.

It mildly irks me too, however, I can't remember the last time I was actually confused by the intent of the speaker.

That's the same feeling I would have if someone told me a story where they were "habilitated by fear" instead of "debilitated by fear". I know what they mean. That doesn't mean the word they used means the same thing though.
