See those jackasses with swastikas, they hate you. They’re the furthest right. See the people with hammers and sickles or black flags and maltovs? They hate each other almost as much as they hate the rich. They’re the furthest left.

In reality the right wing wants lower taxes, more police, more military, less corporate legislation, and to regulate your sexual and medical decisions every moral panic. They also tend to vote how their preacher tells them.

The left wing wants to regulate businesses, fund public works and social services, try to create a more equal society (the right wants hierarchy), and generally supports freedom except when used for bigotry. We also like unions. The further left you go the more you like unions.

Obligatory Wilhoit: “Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit: There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect.”

Man sues Macy’s, saying false facial recognition match led to jail assault (www.washingtonpost.com)

Retailers increasingly are using facial recognition software to patrol their stores for shoplifters and other unwanted customers. But the technology’s accuracy is highly dependent on technical factors — the cameras’ video quality, a store’s lighting, the size of its face database — and a mismatch can lead to dangerous...

Disruptive makeup as the new fashion trend would be cyberpunk as fuck

captainlezbian ,

The trick is we need styles that do it and look good enough to be worth it for people who aren’t nerds. In short now is the time for the high femme tech geeks to be bold, and experimental and make tech art that’s memetic.

captainlezbian , (edited )

Yes, but it’s important to understand it as burning goodwill to do so. And it’s also important to understand that the most effective protests disrupt those with power and garner sympathy from others. ACT UP managed that. They disrupted the medical establishment that was ignoring our deaths and did so while portraying us as a sympathetic people dying in pain after caring for our dying friends.

Disruption without point is ineffective. A pre planned three day strike without the will to move to an indefinite one isn’t effective.

ETA: I guess my point is that disruption is a powerful tactic, but without strategy you’re doomed. Pure demonstration is a popular strategy because it’s low risk, but the reward is shit. A strategy that tries to use the right tactics at the right times to ensure that their next move is even more effective or leaves them better than they started is how you win. Look to the black civil rights movement for good strategy and you’ll see it. They got so good at strategy that later some of the most effective strategists of the gay liberation movement were black people who’d been involved in their civil rights movement.

captainlezbian ,

Exactly! Blocking roads is a good protest against a city. If you’re targeting a business target it. If you’re targeting a specific action make that action massively inconvenient. Damaging oil Derricks for example. And run PR while you do it or you’ll get popular support to crack down on you. You can’t win a fair fight against the United States government. You just can’t. But you can reduce their will to fight hard while you make certain actions inconvenient.

captainlezbian ,

Yeah you let the person in immediate need through.

But I’ve seen it be effective. But as I’ve said you don’t do it randomly. It’s a key component of striking actually. You block entrance into an area. But yeah it’s everyone’s favorite tactic because while it’s not low risk it’s not gonna get you terrorism charges like dropping some thermite into a coal fired power plant will. But that thermite is a self executing protest. Green energy is cheaper to build and maintain, it only becomes more expensive when compared to existing power plants when you still have to build it.

captainlezbian ,

Because it’s not the penis we hate we just aren’t attracted to the dicks typically attached to them.

Also sex toys have evolved from just penis shaped dildos. Many of us prefer abstract shapes or stuff like finger shapes for those, but also vibrators and suction toys are popular.

Also I’m pretty sure I’ve been hearing this joke since before I hit puberty

captainlezbian ,

Eh watch what you do with it and it should stay where you like it

Or I was referring to trans women who haven’t had bottom surgery. Maybe both

captainlezbian ,

Yeah and I think part of why the joke annoys me is like, is that all some men think of themselves as? Like when I think of what I find particularly unattractive about men my first thought isn’t dick, it’s that smell that drives straight women crazy, it’s just such a turn off to me. There’s plenty else too, but like that joke is part of an entire class of shit that (particularly older) men say to lesbians that leaves me thinking they really need to talk to some people who are actually attracted to men about what they like, and to understand that in general even when I like the same part it being too masculine is not for me.

captainlezbian ,

Yeah my favorite is the guys trying to assure us that they’re so masculine they can turn us and I’m just here like, if I absolutely had to sleep with a guy I’d pick the most feminine one I could.

And I think the real root of these jokes is insecurity in their value. If they value women for sex what value do they have to women who don’t want them for sex? And the answer is simple, it’s as a person. My friends that are men are my friends because they’re people I like to spend time with. And they’re of all orientations, but with the shared trait of being good guys. You can’t be so manly every woman wants you in bed, partly because some of us don’t want men at all but also because there are straight women and bi women who like their men effeminate or androgynous. Tastes vary so you’ll never be everyone’s type.

captainlezbian ,

Because they narrowed that time down to the 20th century

captainlezbian ,

Ugh seriously it’s so often these dipshits who think their race makes them special. Like I get that they probably are reaching deep into the barrel to find anything that makes them special it’s not like they can fall back on their personalities, intelligence, appearance, or achievement. So they’ve got to brag about not having much melanin when for other folks it’s just a physical feature we have that’s unfortunately got several centuries of baggage to it.

captainlezbian ,

It’s nationalism (the idea that different peoples deserve their own separate countries) with the people in question being white people. It manages to combine the most problematic aspects of nationalism such as its propensity to drive governments to commit countless atrocities with the most problematic aspects of whiteness as an identity. In short, it’s modern naziism.

captainlezbian ,

So explain the people marching with swastikas last summer or at Charlottesville or hell the American Nazi party which was founded after wwii.

captainlezbian ,

Exactly. Like I’m not going to pretend that racism isn’t a problem at all levels of society. But at a certain level of doing shit with my life worthy of pride people building their life around racism went from wrong and stupid to also being pathetic. Either your skin color is all you have going for you which is fucking pathetic or you’ve achieved something with your life and you still manage to think that your whiteness is one of your most important features which says something is seriously wrong with you. There’s no pride or specialness in being the cultural default.

Like my family immigrated to America recently enough that where we’re from is slightly relevant to my life experiences, and so it has some value to me. But how could I be such a delusional jackass that I can’t see that in others. If grandpa was an immigrant well then I oughta welcome folks here like he wished he’d been welcomed. I appreciated getting to celebrate grandpa’s culture, so maybe other people would like to too and maybe I’ll enjoy celebrating other people’s culture. If America is better for folks like my family being in it then who am I to say other families can’t make it better too.

captainlezbian ,

Actually that decree is older than his papacy. He’s just reaffirming official Catholic doctrine on sexual pleasure. The flip side is they think this gift should be tightly regulated. I for one treat it like laughter, sharing it with all I care to

Tesla charging stations become ‘car graveyards’ as batteries die in subzero temperatures, abandoned cars left in the lot after cars wouldn’t charge (www.kansascity.com)

Tesla charging stations become ‘car graveyards’ as batteries die in subzero temperatures, abandoned cars left in the lot after cars wouldn’t charge::undefined

captainlezbian ,

Yeah I live in an area with winter weather. I still want an ev (and a subcompact one at that) but I live in an apartment without home charging so not yet. The wife and I have been discussing a plug in hybrid though basically as a “we need an internal combustion engine now and want an EV later, but don’t want it to be a car commitment away”

captainlezbian ,

Sigh that sounds awful. Like the biggest perk of evs is no more gas stations

captainlezbian ,

The reason is she got taken more seriously with a deeper voice

captainlezbian ,

Idk, both Andrew Jackson and Johnson were presidents and thought that slavery and genocide were fine at worst.

captainlezbian ,

But also you mention the petty tyrants, keep in mind they demand from us what they voluntarily give. When executives associate dedication with 45 hours week averages they demand we show dedication too.

I think there’s something serious to be said for even executives attempting to move all of our society towards a shorter work week. Though I acknowledge that that doesn’t fall into something any one person can do. I also am not sure whether it’s more likely to arrive top down or bottom up.

captainlezbian ,

Ah I have the attitude of “you’re free to pay me engineer money to do this, but I’m leaving at 4 whether I was productive or doing weird bullshit you decided on.“

captainlezbian ,

I can relate to that. I’m extremely glad I broke that habit. They told me when they needed me. I did what needed to be done within reasonable expectations. My failure past that point is on workload

captainlezbian ,

Ok that’s fair. I’m an engineer and I’ve told my line workers consistently that I’ll never ask them to do something I wouldn’t be willing to do, and at times I do have to help out because shit happens when you’ve got a skeleton crew. Hell I spend some days fabricating my designs.

And yeah I’d love good training. Teaching me actionable skills. Or just send me to grad school or give me a subscription to my professional organization and let me read their magazine on the job. Hell, throw IEEE in there, they’ve always got something to say. But no I’ve spent days doing the training portal bullshit on everything from “here’s how to deal with the fact that technically you’re an arms trafficker, don’t do treason and don’t think about how you’re a legitimate military target” to “watch a too damn long video about workplace sexual harassment that was clearly not written by anyone who’s ever seen a factory floor” and it just made me want to bash my brain in.

Nothing like informing your employees that hard work won’t be rewarded. Wise business decision

captainlezbian ,

They began that way, then they branched into personal computation when that became a thing. Then they took a machine gun to their feet in that market

captainlezbian ,

Hey, I also do things that will look good on my resume. Also enough to not be bored if needed. There’s no spite in my approach, just an understanding that they’ve got theirs and I’ve got mine. If we were union or I was rewarded for excellence I’d put in more effort, but also I’m not going to exhaust or stress myself for a job.

captainlezbian ,

Also silly clothes. Like I love a dirndl as much as anyone else but lederhosen are the most ridiculous manifestation of leather pants

captainlezbian ,

Exactly, dick moves don’t need to be illegal to be dick moves. It’s like the constant price/ad increases. You can, but we’re gonna bitch and encourage people to stop supporting you because it’s a dick move

Women STEM students up to twice as likely as non-STEM students to have experienced sexism (www.hepi.ac.uk)

We know that women students and staff remain underrepresented in Higher Education STEM disciplines. Even in subjects where equivalent numbers of men and women participate, however, many women are still disadvantaged by everyday sexism. Our recent research found that women who study STEM subjects at undergraduate level in England...

captainlezbian ,

As a woman engineer, yeah we’re probably disproportionately responsible. I’m sure science and math have more sexism than say art, but biology has to treat women better than engineering I assume.

captainlezbian ,

Yeah for me the real value here is where the hell am I going to get another quarter. I use my phone to pay and don’t carry cash.

Bullshit. In California you have rights. In Texas they have the explicit right to deny you a lifesaving abortion. The degree of human rights you have used to be generally the same state by state until roe was killed

captainlezbian ,

Of course, but also the last democratic supermajority barely lasted long enough to get a pared down ACA which was an immediate priority at the time. The implied right to privacy was seen as fairly stable until the republicans began stealing Supreme Court seats.

Rip to the 1% who I have to assume are using templeos

X runs ‘timeline takeover’ ad promoting anti-trans film (techcrunch.com)

Thursday on X (Twitter), all users saw the same pinned topic under the “What’s happening?” sidebar. Some trans women use grindr to pick up bi dudes

captainlezbian ,

That’s so sad. Like I get it, I’ve been the internet shut in and it’s just brutal on your mental health. The blunt reality is that most people are fine and plenty are great. Talk to strangers, you might make friends

captainlezbian ,

I’ll also add another major sign is if you don’t know their irl names. I have close friends who I met over the pandemic who live far away, but we knew each other by name and hear each other’s voices. That’s a big thing. Your Twitter/tumblr mutuals or people you regularly interact with on Reddit/Lemmy are people that terminally online people will think of as friends rather than “no we’ve never met irl but we play d&d together or have a book club over discord”.

The other big thing is whether or not you go to irl events. Just literally being somewhere that’s neither home nor work/school helps so much.

They were never competing with cable but with piracy. Of all media sellers it seems Gabe Newell was unique in understanding that

“Have we considered blaming the people who are reviving old religions for our society’s moral failing instead of acknowledging that the political leaders of my country share my religion

captainlezbian ,

Which side means I get to have rights and keep them?

captainlezbian ,

If you’re railing against being made to eat bugs yeah you’re a conspiracy theorist. They’re a perfectly fine meat replacement, though I’ll stick with beans like I think most people will want to

captainlezbian ,

Yeah if you’re dosed with LSD or your democratically elected left wing government gets couped, check if the cia did it. If a bunch of capitalists are trying to figure out how to get people to eat more sustainable protein and think bugs are the answer, idk doesn’t sound very cia. Not enough drugs or anti communism

captainlezbian ,

Yeah that’s why I’ve not eaten land meat for over a year (I occasionally indulge in sustainable fish). I think one major barrier to people is they don’t get how fucking cheap and lazy you can be with meatless meals. And it’s not like I don’t miss meat but physically I’m in great shape, I’m healthy, I eat lazily, and my food is very good. Not much cooking is easier than throwing a can of beans into some water with taco seasoning, reducing it, and slapping it in a tortilla with your toppings of choice.

captainlezbian ,

I’m an American I was always taught the way to keep your rights was to be nice, be democratic, and be dangerous to take rights from. You know, soapbox, ballot box, ammo box
