Why is it so hard for the newer generations to just write a short article about what they want to say? It's so boring watching clips that say so little...

clmbmb ,

Thanks for that, but the question still stands.

Selfhosted alternatives to Goodreads?

So I finally broke down and made a very poor purchasing decision and ordered an e-ink writer to be a notepad/e-reader hybrid. Partially so that it is less of a hassle to read books I got from kickstarters and the like while still using the kindle app for the disturbing amounts of money I throw at Amazon....

Proton Calendar to...Android calendar? Via caldav, perhaps?

Hi guys! So, I have Proton Mail, and this also gives me the Calendar. I love that I have a encrypted private calendar, but it bothers me that it doesn’t play well with any other app, as it’s not officially a “calendar” to Android. This bothers me, because I use GrapheneOS, with mostly no Google services, and I'd like my...

clmbmb ,

It doesn't support CalDAV. It's the main reason I gave up on them. Also, having to use their mail client is not cool.

clmbmb ,

I don't understand why you don't blame Apple first of all for their methods of locking up open standards and/or modifying them just enough that non-apple products won't work.

I don't support Chinese companies for doing shitty products, but fuck Apple for everything they do to lock you in their "ecosystem."

clmbmb ,

They are not open sourcing anything. They just want people to contribute. The license is not open in any good way fit the users.

Don't be so sure! For a few percents off the price some greedy executives would give anything to Microsoft (and/or others).

The Best Secure Email Providers in 2024 (blog.thenewoil.org)

Like it or not, email is a critical part of our digital lives. It’s how we sign up for accounts, get notifications, and communicate with a wide range of entities online. Critics of email rightfully point out that email suffers from a significant number of flaws that make it less than ideal, but that doesn’t change the...

clmbmb ,

Yes, and both have proprietary clients. I have proton and I'm in the process to moving away mainly because I can't use their calendar and contacts natively in Android. Not sure about Tuta, but I never liked them.

clmbmb ,

I get notifications some times, but mostly I get them at totally random times. It's very annoying.

clmbmb ,

I've done this. Didn't help. I'm in a Samsung S20+ and checked with my wife's pixel too and still have problems.

clmbmb ,

You don't have 100% privacy as long as you send mails to people and services that don't support proton's encryption. If I wasn't privacy I can always use gpg.

clmbmb ,

No, the nginx runs inside your network. It's the "entry point" to it and it proxies all requests to your respective services.

clmbmb ,

Thanks for the emojis. I wouldn't have understood the words without them.

Standard notes: what about don’t put all your eggs in one basket rule?

If the owner of the standard notes will now be a proton, doesn't that contradict this principle? I have a proton email account but I don't want it linked to my standard notes account. I don't strongly trust companies that offer packaged services like google or Microsoft....

clmbmb ,

Notesnook is open source and you can check (if you have the knowledge) if there are any issues. They're working on making the server self-hostable (also fully open source) so there's that.

Note-taking app that looks too good to be true? - Siyuan

Recently stumbled upon this note-taking app called SiYuan, but it honestly looks a bit too good to be true(?). Has anyone here used it or got any experience with it? Trying to replace Obsidian is a difficult task, and I've been through almost all note-taking apps there are out there, however this one looks fairly similar....

clmbmb ,

It really looks too good to be true, but I think I'll give it a try these days.

clmbmb ,

[1] siyuan is markdown too but but it’s stored in a database, not your filesystem.

This is a hard pass for me, then. At the moment I'm using Silverbullet, which uses plain markdown files which I can also edit with my preffered editor in CLI.

clmbmb ,

Even if they do, I would run away from any service/app that would open to them. And so should everyone!

clmbmb ,

I haven't had battery usage issues with it for years! Just checked now and it's below 0.4% - it doesn't even show up in the main app list in the battery settings.

clmbmb OP ,

it’s probably not what you want

What do you mean?

clmbmb OP ,

Thanks for the great explanation.

So, currently, as I said, I'm using nginx proxy manager and do this:

  • reverse proxy to all my services inside the internal network on http: *arr stuff, rss reader, jellyfin and some other minor things. All of them use name.local.home notation. I'm using a local DNS for this, of course.
  • reverse proxy to just two services externally on https under wildcard certificates - both are non-standard names and the names are not related to the services themselves. For both these services I use Authelia with 2FA, so even if an attacker guesses the subdomain name, they'll have to bypass that. As far as I can see in my logs, there are no attempts to breach my services.
This is what I want to replicate and I'm planning on testing it.

On the other hand, You gave me a good idea about using *.lab.domain.com getting resolved by the local DNS and the main *.domain.com by my public DNS. I'll give this a try too in the near future. Another plan for me is to start using Authentik, as I saw it's a bit better than Authelia in some areas, even though it may be overkill for a little project - I'll have to see.

clmbmb OP ,

It's not slow as in slow to respond. it's slow when restarting... sometimes it takes 3-4 minutes until it's up and I don't have time for that ;-) Also, it's a good "reason" for me to learn traefik.

Meta gave Netflix and Spotify access to users private messages (arstechnica.com)

in 2018, Facebook told Vox that it doesn't use private messages for ad targeting. But a few months later, The New York Times, citing "hundreds of pages of Facebook documents," reported that Facebook "gave Netflix and Spotify the ability to read Facebook users’ private messages."...

clmbmb ,

No. That doesn't eliminate the need to use a phone number! It's just 'hidden'.

How can I bypass CGNAT by using a VPS with a public IPv4 address?

I want to move away from Cloudflare tunnels, so I rented a cheap VPS from Hetzner and tried to follow this guide. Unfortunately, the WireGuard setup didn't work. I'm trying to forward all traffic from the VPS to my homeserver and vice versa. Are there any other ways to solve this issue?...

clmbmb ,

This looks really interesting. I'll check it these days.

You may be offered a free premium Telegram subscription – but please don’t accept (archive.is)

Telegram is giving away FREE Premium subscriptions! All they need from you is to use your cell phone as a relay to text out their OTP codes! And the recipient of the OTP sees your phone number! What could POSSIBLY go wrong with this deal?...

clmbmb ,

XMPP is an old protocol. GTalk (google talk) and Whatsapp used it, then extended it, then didn't give back to the community. So here we are...

The problem with alternative protocols and apps and whatnot is that people are reluctant to change and won't try anything new if only 2-3 other people use that protocol/service. I can't even convince my best friends to use Signal, let alone XMPP.

clmbmb ,

It's still a server. A file server in this case.

clmbmb ,

Piracy is not breaking the law. Fuck capitalism!

clmbmb , (edited )

The answer is yes in both cases.

  1. Docker has an internal networking setup. You can create a "network" and all containers in that network communicate with each other, but not with other containers in other networks. So you can set up a VPN container in a network and all containers in that netowrk could use the VPN to route their traffic through.
  2. You can configure your VPN container to expose some ports that it uses to communicate, and then the "regular applications" can make use of those ports to connect through the VPN.
clmbmb ,

I don't think that's true anymore. I moved my .eu to porkbun (which is an American company) and it works. Also, I just tried registering a new .eu domain with them and it works - and they have very good prices! (I'm not affiliated with them)

clmbmb ,

If you have tons of CPUs and RAM, yes.

clmbmb ,

XDG doesn't mean you need a GUI. XDG is a specification on how to set up config, cache, etc. directories. aria2 should work without setting anything up.

clmbmb ,

Fuck youtube clips. Fuck the annoying voice! I get it, everybody can make videos today.. but come on, find your brother and ask him to read for you! /haterant

clmbmb ,

What's wrong with APC? I have one for 6-7 years. I've changed the battery once and I think I'll have to change it again this year. I didn't have any problems with it.

clmbmb ,

fuck github. use a different git site, there are plenty!

clmbmb ,

Same here. Taught my wife how to start WireGuard on her android phone and then access any of the services I run. This way I only have one port open and don't have to worry too much.

clmbmb ,

Tailscale is WireGuard. Just a fancy one.

clmbmb ,

You could have explained this in the post description, so people would think about it for a minute.

clmbmb ,

Yes, I do and it's great. I just wrote a template for cooking recipes.
