Ah so Google has gone from NapRoom to full Mainstream now.

Why is Matrix mentioned more often than XMPP in self hosted forums?

I'm looking into hosting one of these for the first time. From my limited research, XMPP seems to win in every way, which makes me think I must be missing something. Matrix is almost always mentioned as the de-facto standard, but I rarely saw arguments why it is better than XMPP?...

corsicanguppy ,

I'm not sure if you noticed this, but Matrix is newer. And, as Barney Stinson will tell you, "Newer is always hotter".

STD: Shiny Things Disease.

They'll find something newer soon. And, if it uses some loose install method with performance or security concerns but installs with a negligent curl|sh, they'll be all over it.

You may be underestimating the length of the legal process involved.

Saved two letters, Skippy. Your efficiency makes up for the news that we're not worth 2 letters.

Well, it was. It's not the reliable, stable OS it was only a few years ago. It has really pushed the envelope for stupid since its first foray into Dumb for EL6.

This actually stuck out more than the comma splices.

This is how Uni kids get drunk on $4 in 1995.

Punctuation: you think of it as optional spice, but the rest of us think of it as required fencing.

    fucken

Ah. Short for "fuckeng", but I think they renamed it Balljang a few decades ago.

I thought that was short for "fucking", but "en" isn't how we do that.

    corsicanguppy ,

however, nothing stops you from moving all the stuff you frequently use to a ramdisk.

    mount /dev/vg-ssd/lv-usr /usr

But do it during install or you have to go behind and remove the eclipsed install stuff after.

And don't do it on systemd-afflicted systems as lennart's cancer makes that harder because he couldn't figure out why a /usr directory was useful and he ditched it. Dunning-kruger says what?

    TR actually endorsed JC's performance.

They're both great. JC's needs the backstory to really feel the feels. But it's all there.

    corsicanguppy ,

    Nah dude. Metaphor.

    USDoJ: How about no.

Oh, right. This isn't 1992 when the DoJ had balls and a constitution.

Buy a condo in a concrete building.

    • quiet as fuck if you also get triple-pane windows
    • neighbors are a rare part of your day if at all
    • in the right area, no cars to drive, park, or recover from impound (you need a city with a subway though or forget about it)
    • things will be nearby
    • the rooftop is nice
    • no lawn to mow
    • no roof to repair yourself
    • usually decent Internet options
    • with some forethought, a high vantage and a good view.

We're stoked but I hope yours works out also.

Microsoft have actually been decent stewards of GitHub

    Ah. That's the "embrace" phase.

Roku explores taking over HDMI feeds with ads (www.lowpass.cc)

Roku is exploring ways to show consumers ads on its TVs even when they are not using its streaming platform: The company has been looking into injecting ads into the video feeds of third-party devices connected to its TVs, according to a recent patent filing.  ...

"Aswell" isn't a word. Are you using to suggest someone's riding a swell, like on the water? Are you saying something's inflamed?

The industry has made us accept a lot of sub-par configurations, and we need to stop this.

    1. no more wifi. If you like it, put a cable on it. ACLs get simpler and spooky radio issues become a distant, comical memory.

    2. Whether it's PDF or something better, find the body pushing for a common format and give them eyeballs and money. Make printers interchangeable again.

    a dumb appliance

This is the goal. Printing is a solved problem, so we should avoid anything overcomplicating it for profit reasons.

People need to let "internet privacy" go.

    Fundraise your essentials services

Ha ha ha. I think fundraising is the only income less reliable than usage fees.

    Welp, killed the account.

Honestly, I wasn't getting much value out of it, so it made sense.

The rule about noods isn't just a rule for half our population. The victim-shaming in the next panel really launders the issue, though. I'm left now wondering whether the writer intentionally equated exhibitionism with just trying to walk home, and what that means for the thesis.

I went to America for the wealth and riches 25 years ago; but I came back about 20 years ago, for reasons entirely related to healthcare and filled with issues that in this country we don't understand actually exist.

To restate: the problems of in-network/out-of-network are so alien to us that you'd need to convince my peers it's real, because they almost believe it's made up.

My Indian boss, raised in Tanzania, had a certain bias. "People who can leave India," he said, "do." I'm thinking soon people who can leave America, despite the promise of riches and because of the healthcare, do.

Should I learn Docker or Podman?

Hi, I've been thinking for a few days whether I should learn Docker or Podman. I know that Podman is more FOSS and I like it more in theory, but maybe it's better to start with docker, for which there is a lot more tutorials. On the other hand, maybe it's better to straight up learn podman when I don't know any of the two and...

Now do systemd. It'll be easier since it has nothing but fanboys. It's like Apple vs Android.

Not voting is a conservative ploy. It's their best chance.

The process of evolving your leadership remains the same:

    1. pick the least-worse option, based on who can realize goals they're pitching that actually help people.

    2. repeat step 1 every election.

Since the conservatives in my country have no platform other than "My opponent is terrible!" they should be disqualified .. but aren't.

    the ansible playbook

No thanks. I get paid to do that at work, and that's where that hot garbage will stay.

    corsicanguppy ,

Nope. You may want to consider Mumble.

There was a time when people were buying the smart TV because Netflix and Apple were then apps on the TV and used the same remote.

But the apps are old and crunchy, the tv shovels ads at you, and the steamers are no longer offering the value required to make smart TVs a prime consolidation target.

I am looking forward to the contraction of the market and a shift back to "just a TV with 4 HDMIs" models. No tuners even.

    corsicanguppy ,

You say I need to get my wife to spend her yearly bonus on an 85" 8k TV ... for science?

I'll do it. It'll be hard to pitch that but dammit it's for science.

You mean in the sense where overexposure to news makes someone generally paranoid, combined with the fact that a massive fire in colombia is not likely to enrich their perceptions or help them understand the world around them any better?

    corsicanguppy ,

    and it's effects

    Yes, it is effects.
