Microsoft has gone too far: including a Game Pass ad in the Settings app ushers in a whole new age of ridiculous over-advertising (www.techradar.com)

Windows 11 is getting out of hand with its push for advertisments, frankly - remember the recent full-screen pop-up to persuade users to install Edge or other Microsoft services? Then another advertisment was placed in the Start menu, and now Microsoft has finally worn my temper thin - with a new Game Pass ad coming to the...

fruitycoder ,

Win 8 was aggregious. 10 is more subtle (little notifications now and then)

Enterprise is better

Props to Alpine and Kali for disabling this bullshit out of the box (lemmy.world)

Context for newbies: Linux refers to network adapters (wifi cards, ethernet cards, etc.) by so called "interfaces". For the longest time, the interface names were assigned based on the type of device and the order in which the system discovered it. So, eth0, eth1, wlan0, and wwan0 are all possible interface names. This, however,...

fruitycoder ,

No idea what mactab is, but maybe it solves it for me, but being able to go from interface name back to a rack full of heterogeneous PCI cards and go "yep it should be this port" was a wildly useful feature.

I feel like there should be automatic alias creation for simply interface names though.

fruitycoder ,

Hey you are doing your best and actually thinking of ways to be better. Don't let critics keep you down. (Just throwing my support your way)

fruitycoder ,

Any economical ways to run farms on rail? A lot of the roads where I have lived were just built and paid for by famers to move equipment between pay dirt and make their way to town occasionally

fruitycoder ,

I mean he's right. A system where ubi is just handed out to placate the unenpowered is a recipe for disaster.

We NEED real power, including economic. Why would your vote matter if the military doesn't need you, why would your purchasing power matter if you don't produce anything, etc.
People may have intrinsic worth but intrinsic worth doesn't the levers of power pull.

fruitycoder ,

I do think its possible but my bet is more on the probability that it will be leveraged to commodify and further alienate labor so that that power can be leveraged less.

The tools used to align the machines is where that power would reside in. A kind of church caste for the machine with the purpose of giving meaning.

fruitycoder ,

For real why are people so hyped about having less software built by people principled in protecting their freedoms?

GNU and the FSF are awesome!

fruitycoder ,

K3s! You could even reuse your pis in the cluster.

I would deploy it to your new server, setup your CSI (e.g longhorn its pretty simple), find a helm chart for one of the apps and try deploying it.

fruitycoder ,

I think retrieval augmentation and fine tunning are the biggest tools to the results more refined (or better reference a document as a source of truth). The other ironically is just regular deterministic programming.

fruitycoder ,

Some people dig the holes some people fill them. Everyone greatful for the job.

If search engine fix the bullshit signifers the fake would dry up.

fruitycoder ,

Honestly. This is why fair trade cert or taa compliant or just know trusted country is ok with me when I buy things.

I just don't want to be complict in known slavery. I don't want to support oppressive regimes. Etc, etc, etc.

fruitycoder ,

I mean sure, but supporting explicit slavery is bad, so I'm gonna do my best to not.

fruitycoder ,

As a citizen of the world its because they are slavers and fuck slavery. One of the biggest lobbiest against fighting slavery too.

Having been friends and family IT though its because they suck. They suck to work on. They suck to devolop for. They suck to run server stuff on. They suck to game on. And they cost an arm and leg for the privilege.

Top EU Court Says There’s No Right To Online Anonymity, Because Copyright Is More Important (www.techdirt.com)

The key problem is that copyright infringement by a private individual is regarded by the court as something so serious that it negates the right to privacy. It’s a sign of the twisted values that copyright has succeeded on imposing on many legal systems. It equates the mere copying of a digital file with serious crimes that...

fruitycoder ,

If copyright is sacrosanct then the creation of data by me is my own personal property and without a contract anyone holding my data is in violation.

fruitycoder ,

Wait so the play is to make us push bitcoin BECAUSE its a huge energy hog to float fossil fuels prices UP?

Honestly wtf kind of policy is this?

Like at least white nationalist pull in 2016 was pretty clear cut, but who the hell is that even for? Like what chud libertarian wants to see the government artificial increase energy prices?

fruitycoder ,

If this is a move to commit dark money campaign fraud again before his sentencing on the last case of it is even done I would want to see a live reaction of the judge when he hears that

fruitycoder ,

Gotta think most sfw pictures of people are portraits. Poses are more advanced for sure

fruitycoder ,

SD3 is planned to be open release later still though?

fruitycoder ,

I'm not seeing about the lead researcher leaving because of that, just they are leaving. With the expenses far exceeding revenue right now being a suspected reason.

fruitycoder ,

Mozilla fanboy here, this feels like an absolute diversion from the mission. They should have at least notified the community and devs some how, delayed the best they could, and then ban them to prevent being censored too. They better fight it or at empower someone that can (both technical circumvention attempts and legal rectification).

Adobe to update vague AI terms after users threaten to cancel subscriptions (arstechnica.com)

Adobe has promised to update its terms of service to make it "abundantly clear" that the company will "never" train generative AI on creators' content after days of customer backlash, with some saying they would cancel Adobe subscriptions over its vague terms....

fruitycoder ,

Whoops that was phase 2 not phase 1, we update to that later /s

fruitycoder ,

Based Elon take. Honestly probably some super stupid petty reason or half bake effective altruism bs, but companies should 100% consider products that hoover up ever piece data of their companies data to a preemptive strike to out compete them in the future.

If people don't think googles and openais data collection (including reenforcement learning from product us) is at going to try to the center if market making for those companies they are paying attention.

fruitycoder ,

Thank you for the link! That is a very solid layout of his case against them I think

fruitycoder ,

Honestly considering going to DC lighting after my solar conversion completes at my house for this reason

fruitycoder ,

And few people want to work for free or want put aside too much of there personal wealth to help people for things that don't seem critical (like healthcare for example which has a lot of nonprofit activities).

I hope OpenSource keeps takening off in the field. Communalize the engineering results so we advance together, and lower the cost of manufacturing with diy/small scale manufacturing and maybe we can get better things at costs more can afford without enslaving people.

fruitycoder ,

The opensource edm machine that is just now gain popularity seems like a great choice for parts! LumenPNP for machine replacement circuit boards on larger scales is exciting to me too ( I hate hand soldering so maybe its just a personal thing lol).

My local maker space built a plasma tourch and table too. Honestly it feels likes all coming together for it to be done

fruitycoder ,

I was looking at rv lighting as some options over wise just doing custom jobs (LEDs in whatever fixtures I think look nice). It helps like domes, reccesed, and ambiant lighting I think.

Oh yeah electricians are allergic to DC lol (I used to be one, and yeah that was big knowledge gap in codes, breakers, etc).

fruitycoder , (edited )

Yeah billy should be build IEDs not 3d printed guns. That'll make kids safer. /s

Honestly, why can't we put half the effort we do censoring the world into teaching kids/people the sanctity of human life. There was a time where the US was had strong pacifist culture but almost every house had gun, but I think we didn't do a good job transitioning from religious to secular values in that way.

fruitycoder ,

I mean I am unironically I am for people making medicine and medical devices at home if they have no other option (the four thieves vinegar collective is the best group I know for this, with diy abortion cards being one their products).

fruitycoder ,

Lol yeah I doubt IUDs are being talked about much on the war reports. Its been a heck of a week for me, so that's my excuse for the typo.

fruitycoder ,

Oh yeah no doubt religion isn't a solid basis for morality. More so just saying that we are niehlist, new ageist, more than holding something like humanist values now.

A lot of the 3d printed gun video content is more like reviews because YouTube already censor creation content.

fruitycoder ,

I love the idea of exo brain/second brain where AI helps me keep track of all of my stuff and recall stuff.

But I want to extend myswlf not assimilate to the Microsoft Borg collective lol

fruitycoder ,

Close for sure. Connectivity and being persistent storage of info/experience tho7gh notes and pictures, but the retrieval is lack luster and there doesn't tend to do a lot of knowledge creation on that info on its own.

fruitycoder ,

Use a Foss client that blocks the client tracking aspects, tor to connect, and only post pgp encrypted messages on it?

fruitycoder ,

How are politicians supposed to learn about niche issues in the private sector?

fruitycoder ,

Heavy vehicles, light vehicles, and pedestrians shouldn't be sharing the same lanes except rare exceptions. Its just planning on pain otherwise.

fruitycoder ,

Its just a much a much easier environment to manage. Law enforcement, violence in general, is the last resort when all better options fail.

fruitycoder ,

There is a lot of legal limits for medical procedures not in the pursuit of documented illnesses. You will have a very hard time finding someone willing to take off a working arm for a protestic for example.

fruitycoder ,

Really looking forward to seeing more Rancher Harvester clusters out there.

VMWare stuff are a pain to work with and open source and more modern systems are needed anyways. Really want to see all of the crazy powerful stuff people do when VMs are just another type of container.

fruitycoder ,

My current push is bike infra for kids to get to school, parks, community centers and libraries. Roads aren't a safe for them and they can't drive themselves.

fruitycoder ,

Honestly Louis Rossmans experience as a small business owner living the real life Kafka novel in new Yorks legal system made me never want to live there.

fruitycoder ,

It make sense if it were like the TSA to be honest, bring everything you need to vote or preregister for a faster experience. Would also help if was voting month(s) instead of day so people could comfortably vote.

fruitycoder ,

Actually unless they made it working for the university its normal for students to retain their IP rights.

fruitycoder ,

Sure: https://www.research.psu.edu/otm/student_IP_guidance

This is something I've remember over hearing as well from a FOSS advocate as bit of complexity they deal with.

fruitycoder ,

At least all non long travel stations for sure.

fruitycoder ,

Is narcissistic disorder a prereq to be a billionaire or is it just a common symptom of having too much wealth for some.

fruitycoder ,

For real I've put in a fraction supporting OpenSource then I had if I had to buy unfree software and I've gotten way more out of it.

I see it as a difference between owning and renting.
