The era of buying a new phone every year is over. That, and each year, new phone iterations aren’t all too different from the last.

This was bound to happen.

It may be running SLED, but just imagine all the specialized, tweaked af code running on top. They didn’t just pop in a LiveCD and click “Install”.

gregorum ,
@gregorum@lemm.ee avatar

Of course. I was obviously referring to what it takes to operate it after that. Not to mention how complicated setting that whole mess up is.

In the late 80s and early 90s

Hold up there… HTLM wasn’t even invented until 1991 by Timothy Berners-Lee who then made the first web server, web browser, and web page. It was another two or three years before browsing the web became more common. Before then, the internet was very basic, consisted of a few simple services, and was typically only accessible via universities and large corporations.

Regular people often only had access to regional online services until national services like CompuServe, Prodigy, and AOL came along.

gregorum ,
@gregorum@lemm.ee avatar

The internet existed pre-web. Email, Usenet, IRC, Archie, etc. the real difference between ARPANET and the Internet was the introduction of TCP/IP packet handling and CIX which unified ISPs, but those both came pre-1991.

I may not be very familiar with how the Italian Parliament works, but how many votes do “cars” get? Are they taxpayers? Do they have some kind of pull with Il Papa?

But it doesn’t contain tobacco (at the time of delivery) and isn’t electronic.

Bongs aren’t electronic. That’s, seemingly, the line in the law.

I suppose it’s an oversight in the law then

gregorum ,
@gregorum@lemm.ee avatar

I understand that. As you can see by the other comment I left, I think it’s just an oversight in the law.

Another benefit to this is that the USB port goes into a restricted mode that only allows for charging, and you can still use your cameras to record while it’s in this mode.

gregorum ,
@gregorum@lemm.ee avatar

On iPhones, if you have Face ID enabled, pressing the power button 5 times puts in lockdown mode. This disables the usb port, Face ID, contactless payments, and requires the 6-digit pin to unlock everything. I don’t know if android phones have something similar.

It’s a neat trick for when you think you might get into a “situation”. Also, the cameras still work.

gregorum ,
@gregorum@lemm.ee avatar

That’s the thing about lockdown mode— it’s super-quick to enable of you get into a situation, and you can still use your device with it turned on to, for example, video record an incident that will live-stream or sync to the cloud for later remote retrieval.

And with the usb port disabled, the cops won’t be extracting anything.

You’re making their point for them

gregorum ,
@gregorum@lemm.ee avatar

And what about the long road it takes to get to everyone’s needs being met? How will you ever get to that point? It doesn’t just happen overnight.

That may be no reason to do shit like that once everyone’s needs are being met, but there will be until you get to that point, and because of that, there’s no reason to think you would.

The vast majority of crime committed by the public (that is, by individuals, not by corporations who actually commit the vast majority of crime, typically against the workers in the form of wage theft) is a symptom of poverty, especially generational poverty. Without launching into 10 or 12 paragraphs explaining the systematic effects of this, the best way to reduce crime is to reduce poverty in the general population. give people stable homes, stable incomes, and stable education, and crime plummets. Populations with low poverty, and where people have generally stable lives and stable incomes have low crime rates. Easy access to medical care and strong, social safety nets reduce crime even further because they reduce the desperation people encounter when they fall into poverty.

Also, increasing easy access to abortion also has a prominent effect on reducing crime.

Edit: btw, more info about corporate crime and wage theft:

Cops don’t prevent crime, not in any significant way. Their job is to enforce the law, typically by responding after a crime has already occurred. Because they are trained to primarily respond with force and to believe any and every thing in existence absolutely will try to kill them at any moment, and to treat everyone the encounter as guilty and sources for incriminating information, they act as hammers treating everyone as a nail. They are dangerous, paranoid thugs never to be trusted.

fyi, WindowsXP was codenamed "Whistler". Windows 7 was originally codenamed "Blackcomb", but that codename was later dropped. Windows Home Server 2011 was codenamed "Vail".

Whistler Blackcomb was the name of a resort that the Windows design team used to on retreat to. They would also go elsewhere, as I’m sure you can guess…

Windows 11 was codenamed “Sun Valley”

Here’s a novel concept: just ask the question here. I can provide the same answer I did on Reddit, now with the benefit of many more years’ worth of knowledge and experience.

Whether or not, you can access my old answer from many years ago instantly via Google is not a concern for me. I didn’t put that comment on Reddit many years ago for your personal convenience, And complaining about it now sounds more than a little bit entitled. If you wanna be mad at anyone, be mad at Reddit for shitting all over the free content, the users provided by taking advantage of them.
