Snowden is rather trustworthy simply because he risked A LOT by doing something he believed in. He's an international hero.

Self-hosting an AI chatbot takes 5 minutes and is very easy if you've ever used the linux terminal before.

ichbinjasokreativ ,

Depends on the model. Dolphin-mistral is like 4GB in size and runs on any somewhat modern cpu with reasonable performance. Larger models ofc should be run with higher end gpus at least, but even in hybrid mode (gpu+cpu) models like dolphin-mixtral (26GB) run just fine. For reference, I have a 5800x and a 6900xt, ollama installed in a distrobox container.

ichbinjasokreativ ,

If my current car ever breaks down and repair isn't an option, I'll spend whatever many days it takes me to rip out all the trackers, microphones, interior cameras and antennas in my new car.

this is also the main reason I'll not switch to an EV, they're all full of spyware. This shit needs to be illegal.

ichbinjasokreativ ,

I don't like apple either, but in this case you're right. I have signal on my phone and on my linux machines, if I share those computers with someone else and let them use the same user, they can open signal and see my messages. The guy in the article is an idiot.

ichbinjasokreativ ,

Exactly

ichbinjasokreativ ,

Fair point. Signal would ask me if I want to delete on this device only or on all devices though, does iMessage do that too?

ichbinjasokreativ ,

Signal asks if you want to delete a message on all devices, incauding the recipients, or only on the current device.

Microsoft in damage-control mode, says it will prioritize security over AI (arstechnica.com)

Microsoft is pivoting its company culture to make security a top priority, President Brad Smith testified to Congress on Thursday, promising that security will be "more important even than the company’s work on artificial intelligence."...

ichbinjasokreativ ,

So they lied und tried to cover it up, which led to the largest cyber attack ever. There's going to be serious punishment, right? Right?

ichbinjasokreativ ,

Get a laptip with a real hardware switch for the cam and the mic. Best peace of mind knowing that they're really off. Neither tape, nor the non-electrical built-in plastic sliders do that.

ichbinjasokreativ ,

Hardware switches physically cut power to the device in question and you can take it apart and verify. There is no trust involved.

ichbinjasokreativ ,

The problem with those is that it's often just a piece of plastic, so the microphone isn't cut off from power. The webcam sees noching, but sound is unaffected.

ichbinjasokreativ ,

It's more about privacy. Windows might access your mic to get more data on you for advertising, wouldn't be anything new.

ichbinjasokreativ ,

They don't neccessarily need to, you can pretty much always just look at reviews. Now you can make a point about trusting reviewers, but all that is still better than trusting the manufacturer or microsoft.

You're right though, there is trust involved, but only if you don't verify things yourself.

ichbinjasokreativ ,

And this kind of thing is why my next laptop will be one of theirs

ichbinjasokreativ ,

And this is why the stock market, net worth and market cap are so stupid. Apple haven't released anything yet, even microsoft haven't really had an idea what AI is actually useful for, apart from their blatant spyware, but apple just go on stage, say "AI" a bunch of times and are the worlds most valuable company once more.

ichbinjasokreativ ,

I'm torn on this. Allow them and let natural selection take its course, or force students to pay attention, which I would've hated as a kid.

AMD has preemptively dropped support for Windows 10 on its new Ryzen AI 300 Series chips (www.tomshardware.com)

In another attempt to convince us that "AI PCs" are somehow fundamentally different from the PCs we're already using, AMD has officially dropped support for Windows 10 from its new AMD Ryzen AI 300 Series platform. This can be observed by glancing at the official AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 specs page, which now only lists 64-bit...

ichbinjasokreativ ,

They probably want to be on best terms with microsoft. M$ have been heavily marketing ARM CPUs from Qualcomm and AMD don't want to be left bihind.

ichbinjasokreativ ,

Wolfs do not normally loose to individual wild pigs

ichbinjasokreativ ,

Trigger warning! Updating my linux systems takes 15 seconds ;)

ichbinjasokreativ ,

Absolutely, but unless you're on a rolling release, it still won't be that long. For example, my homelab ubuntu server didn't get updated for over a month, but when I finally did run updates it finished after no more than a minute.
Depends a bit on hardware and network speed though.

ichbinjasokreativ ,

Right, but my tumbleweed install gets 100+ package updates per week, whereas ubuntu gets like 20

ichbinjasokreativ ,

My Computers are all reasonably modern and decetly spec'd, resources should not be an issue. Ubuntu also ships with a lot more pre-installed packages than tumbleweed does, but I get your point.

ichbinjasokreativ ,

Incorrect. If you dig through the settings and turn it off, then it doesn't record anything, but it's enabled by default on PCs that have an NPU.

ichbinjasokreativ ,

That is how they spin it now, but I saw the setup process for windows 11 on copilot+ laptops and it was opt-out originally. I'd imagine it's going to be one of those things where they ask you to enable it every couple of days.

ichbinjasokreativ ,

Edge is opt-out though. It's your default from the beginning until you change it by installing a different browser.

ichbinjasokreativ ,

Right? Before they even officially rolled it out, there are already python scripts on github that can extract your entire recall database. They need to just stop.

ichbinjasokreativ ,

Can't stop shooting their own feet. Great product, horrible name. Imagine buying a laptop with this cpu and then someone asks you what processor it has.

ichbinjasokreativ ,

Ryzen AI 9 HX 17.
strix point is a cool name imo

ichbinjasokreativ ,

ARM based and usually IoT. Also, the nintendo switch.

ichbinjasokreativ ,

Ubuntu pro is not at all a bad thing. It's free to consumers but you can also just ignore it if you don't need it.

ichbinjasokreativ ,

The ssh prompt? I think you just need to mess with the files in /etc/update-motd.d

ichbinjasokreativ ,

I've been using Ubuntu for about 3, years now on the desktop and I don't know what you're talking about. Where exactly is that prompt?
And they're not hiding updates behind pro, it's just extra on top of the updates you'd get on other distros.

ichbinjasokreativ ,

It is for up to 5 devices, so small-scale homelab stuff can be covered without cost.

ichbinjasokreativ ,

Does what? Sign up for ubuntu pro? For that you just need to go to their website and register. For the homelab stuff you could start small - maybe a linux nas with a few VMs for a pihole or something.

The ugly truth behind ChatGPT: AI is guzzling resources at planet-eating rates (www.theguardian.com)

Despite its name, the infrastructure used by the “cloud” accounts for more global greenhouse emissions than commercial flights. In 2018, for instance, the 5bn YouTube hits for the viral song Despacito used the same amount of energy it would take to heat 40,000 US homes annually....

ichbinjasokreativ ,

This is what pisses me off so much about the climate crisis. People tell me not to use my car, but then microsoft just randomly blow out 30% more co2 for AI

ichbinjasokreativ ,

Part of why right wing politics are becoming so popular again is that so many politicians shove the financial responsibility of cutting carbon onto the normal population. My point is that it feels useless to cut my own emission as long as massive corporations can just randomly emitt way more without consequence. Also, microsoft use electricity for more that just chatgpt.

ichbinjasokreativ ,

I have no doubt about that

ichbinjasokreativ ,

I am SHOCKED

ichbinjasokreativ ,

I'd still blame microsoft for shoving AI down peoples throats. Search something on bing (or google for that matter) and you get an AI response, even if you don't want it. It's the choice of these corporations.

ichbinjasokreativ ,

you're right on that of course

ichbinjasokreativ ,

Where's that from?

ichbinjasokreativ ,

Worlds largest tech-megacorporation is unable to keep their shit up and running. Lmao.

ichbinjasokreativ ,

Windows has done this for ages now. Buying a laptop, you pay well over $100 for the windows license alone, yet it is the most egregious operating system when it comes to datamining the user.

ichbinjasokreativ ,

Next time Gates slips his microcock up your ass, remember that there's no such requirement for using linux

ichbinjasokreativ ,

Ubuntu is still really good and quite nicely polished. Alternatively, mint and fedora also get a lot of recommendations.

I personally use ubuntu.
