You're right, except that this is about years-old deleted pics. Like deleted-in-2021 old. The blocks on the partition have long since been overwritten.

ichbinjasokreativ ,

Mental outlaw said that and it just stayed in my head ever since. Just like /etc is 'etsy'.

ichbinjasokreativ ,

They are nowhere near close to windows

ichbinjasokreativ ,

There was backlash, they removed it and never tried anything similar since. But I'm with you on that, the idea was insane and if they pull anything like that again, I'll be switching away from ubuntu immediatly.

ichbinjasokreativ ,

But that delay in opening is only for the very first time after installation, it does not affect any subsequent app starts, even after you reboot. In real world performance, snaps are basically just as fast as any normal app in my experience. And you need to keep in mind what the idea behind ubuntu is - they want it to be useful to experienced users as well as newbies and tech-illiterates. Snap automatic updates are honestly really nice if you don't want to think about updates and canonical have done a lot of work to make the experience as smooth as possible, and the sandbox is a nice bit of added security. They are very versatile too, allowing any type of software to be a snap, from little terminal tools to full-featured nextcloud instances

ichbinjasokreativ ,

They fixed the delay after reboots and you can disable automatic updates with a single snap command

ichbinjasokreativ ,

I get that, they shouldn't replace debs with snaps, but offer both. Snap as default makes sense for new users though

ichbinjasokreativ ,

That's fine, use whatever you like. I'm just saying that current ubuntu is quite polished.

ichbinjasokreativ ,

This was to be expected and they handled it well imo.
I'm not gonna get one though.

ichbinjasokreativ ,

Don't really need sandboxed software for that. Ubuntu comes with their own software store and even if you only select deb, you just klick on install and you're done

ichbinjasokreativ ,

It is insane to me how piracy is making a comeback because decision makers forgot Gabe's lesson

ichbinjasokreativ ,

If BYD weren't stealing western designs I might consider them. They are saving a lot of cost from not having to do much RnD

ichbinjasokreativ ,

Their current flagship is basically a 1-1 copy of some porsche ev

ichbinjasokreativ ,

It most likely is. And if it's not your phone, then it's your car (assuming it has been built in the last few years)

ichbinjasokreativ ,

there's nala as an upgrade to apt, but pacman iirc has a few more features still

Windows 11 Start menu ads are now rolling out to everyone (www.theverge.com)

Microsoft is starting to enable ads inside the Start menu on Windows 11 for all users. After testing these briefly with Windows Insiders earlier this month, Microsoft has started to distribute update KB5036980 to Windows 11 users this week, which includes “recommendations” for apps from the Microsoft Store in the Start menu....

ichbinjasokreativ ,

I'm not sure tbh, but this should be deactivateable by gpos. Work machines should not be affected if the IT staff is on to it.

ichbinjasokreativ ,

Group policy. They're a windows feature for domain management that allows admins to make lots of changes to a potentially infinite amount of computers remotely.
Efit: for example, changing the start menu to be on the left automatically, setting default home pages in the browser, mounting network drives etc

ichbinjasokreativ ,

The entire EV industry in currently plummeting. They'll rebound.

ichbinjasokreativ ,

The company that straight up stole porsche car designs to build 'their' flagship? It's not going to be available in the west until they can actually build their own cars.

ichbinjasokreativ ,

You could wait a couple of days and try ubuntu 24.04

with its much newer kernel it might not have that issue

ichbinjasokreativ ,

What the fuck? Are there really people who allow that?

ichbinjasokreativ ,

I work in IT and endpoint management is among my tasks. Knowing the things we can do to smartphones that are controlled by our mdm is enough to where I would never agree to having thatopn my personal device. I even refused to get a company provided smartphone.

ichbinjasokreativ ,

Ungoogled chromium + uBlock origin + pihole and I haven't had any issues so far (Germany)

using linux is such a breath of fresh air anytime I had to use windows on my work laptop

    ichbinjasokreativ ,

Nobody actually gives a shit about 'AI PCs'. Hopefully microsoft burn a lot of money on this.

    ichbinjasokreativ ,

They won't give you updates if you have radeon software or intel config tool?

    ichbinjasokreativ ,

Right?! Yesterday GamersNexus published a new video 3 minutes before I watched it. It only had a couple dozen views at that point, but somehow somebody had already mapped it!

    ichbinjasokreativ ,

Nala is fantastic! You sometimes also get a funny typo.

    ichbinjasokreativ ,

Really? I've only dabbled with locally run AI for a bit, but performance in something like ollama or stable diffusion has been really great on my 6900xt.

    ichbinjasokreativ ,

I've heard that even AMD are internally working on ARM-based desings, but that's just a rumor maybe

    ichbinjasokreativ ,

To be fair, x86 was held back a long while when intel was the dominant market force without competition. And arm is starting to stagnate too, even apple have not meaningfully improved their arm-based cpus since the m1

    ichbinjasokreativ ,

ARM is not a GPU-architecture, but a competitor to x86, which is what intel and AMD are basing their CPUs on. Through a very confusing web of patents and deals, only those two corporations are able to use it. ARM was developed to be slimmer than x86, but only recently cought up in performance, while retaining an advantage in efficiency. They're not compatible with each other though, which is why apple had to create an emulation layer for x86 software when they switched from intel to arm for their cpus. Microsoft will (and have) need to do the same thing, but it's not clear yet what performance will look like for things like gaming. Microsoft largely want to make windows on arm a thing for battery life and so that they can create their own processors.

    ichbinjasokreativ ,

AMD-64 is an upgrade to x86 that allows it to work with (I think) 64 Bit lntegers. The most obvious consequence is the jump from being able to use 4GB of RAM to whatever absurd number 64Bit are able to handle

    ichbinjasokreativ ,

What makes googles monopoly a fair bit less bad than for example microsoft's, is that google at least open sources their stuff. You can install something like ungoogled chromium to use their product without all their bullshit.

    ichbinjasokreativ ,

Correct. But vscode is nowhere near as dominant in the coding space as chromium is in browsers. Call me when ms makes windows open source.

    ichbinjasokreativ ,

I have 250Mbit/s in a really old building within a small to medium size town in Germany

Google Allows Creditors to Brick Your Phone (lemmy.world)

I installed NetGuard about a month ago and blocked all internet to apps, unless they're on a whitelist. No notifications from this particular system app (that can't be disabled) until recently when it started making internet connection requests to google servers. Does anyone know when this became a thing?...

    ichbinjasokreativ ,

I've installed graphene on my phone a while ago (bought from a carrier in germany) and this app does not exist.

    edit: nevermind, it's there

    ichbinjasokreativ ,

    What does that do?

    ichbinjasokreativ ,

Everytime I think I know something about linux someone else comes along and starts speaking magic.

    ichbinjasokreativ ,

Minimal investment. A purpose-built robotic production line is incredibly expensive and can onl- do what it was designed for. Theoretically, using these robots requires no alterations to the existing facilities, allowing mercedes to trial them with very low risk and comparably low losses if things don't work out.

    ichbinjasokreativ ,

They make realls nice cars to their credit

    ichbinjasokreativ ,

I use stable diffusion on rocm in an ubuntu distrobox container. Super easy to set up and there's a good guide in the opensuse forum for it.

    ichbinjasokreativ ,

I've been gaming on linux for about two years now through steam proton and it's really good. Some games don't run because of anti cheat, some games run even better than on windows.

Everybody’s talking about Mistral, an upstart French challenger to OpenAI (arstechnica.com)

On Monday, Mistral AI announced a new AI language model called Mixtral 8x7B, a "mixture of experts" (MoE) model with open weights that reportedly truly matches OpenAI's GPT-3.5 in performance—an achievement that has been claimed by others in the past but is being taken seriously by AI heavyweights such as OpenAI's Andrej...

    ichbinjasokreativ ,

Something like mistral-dolphin (4GB) and mixtral-dolphin (26GB) are running very smoothly on my 6900xt on rocm 6
