As a long time user of Opera (from before they went with Chromium), I've been using Vivaldi as my primary browser since they first released a public preview. It has its downsides (i.e. the UI is slightly slower than that of Chrome), but at the same time it's the thing that feels most "at home" for me after migrating away from the joke Opera has become. The developers seem to hold a strong anti-manifest-v3 stance, but unfortunately at one point they might have to comply. I just tried the built-in blocker instead of uBlock Origin I normally use and it seems to do a pretty good job.

I get the whole "switch to Firefox" thing; for me the major blocker is that it doesn't have global mouse gestures and this messes up with my muscle memory. If they add that, I might give Firefox another chance.

Host your own stuff. With this little load you can do it on your own hardware with very little resources.

kamen ,

Hopefully this pushes people into critical thinking, although I agree that being suicidal and getting such a suggestion is not the right time for that.

"Yay! 1st of April has passed, now everything on the Internet is right again!"

kamen ,

I have to admit, Samsung have some great things in terms of hardware, but this is not one of them - and their anti-consumer practices will continue to keep me away from the brand.

kamen ,

At least from software point of view Google doesn't make a fuss with the warranty if you unlock the bootloader of the phone, which can't be said about Samsung (and good luck with Apple about that). It might not matter to the majority of users, but it matters to me.

kamen ,

How's that? As far as I know, once you trip Knox (which unlocking the bootloader does), you can't restore the phone to factory state. Will they honour the warranty then?

kamen ,

You might be right (I hope you are), but it's yet another gamble I'm not willing to take. Moreover, even if you don't have to resort to warranty, you have limitations after you trip Knox if you change your mind or if you want to resell the device.

kamen ,

Talk about information "leaks" these days...

kamen ,

Yep, I see it the same way. Fake sensationalism to keep people engaged.

I'm sure actual leaks also do happen from time to time, but way less often than they make us think.

kamen ,

Yeah and almost any other drink contains water, what an effin' rip-off!

kamen ,

Damn I feel old now. It feels like this came out like 5-6 years ago.

kamen ,

The problem is when they're perfectly organised in a different manner from what you expect :D

kamen ,

Now I'm sad that it already has a name - I don't get to name my diagnosis.

For the files themselves lately I've been doing something like Country of Origin/Artist/Original Year - Album (Catalogue Number) (Release Year)/ (used to do it without the country, but at one point they became way too many, and I don't really like organising by letter or whatever). I love foobar2000 with Facets because of the fact that you can shove any arbitrary tag into the files and then have columns show it (I'm doing that with the countries for example), but I'm now suffering a bit because of that habit - I started also self hosting my library and Navidrome that I'm using doesn't like just any tags that you throw at it (it especially doesn't like it if you have multiple releases of the same album that have come out in the same year).

kamen ,

My view is that not having separate artist folders is wild, but hey, whatever works for you.

All in all however specific folder structure is not terribly important to me; what's important is that the tags are in order and that I can make the app I'm using present the stuff in the manner that I want.

kamen ,

I do, but shush, don't tell anyone! Still, nobody has complained about that so far.

kamen ,

Yup. It's as if we're assuming this friend is coding inside Notepad.

kamen ,

If you're not aware yet, there's an xkcd for everything.

kamen ,

Why does it rhyme with "shoot yourself in the foot"?

kamen ,

Fair point, and I can't not think of Louis Rossmann after reading this. Still, I'm not sure how much it affects small scale farming (assuming that's what the neofetch dev is doing).

kamen ,

Normally I wouldn't care what person made the music I enjoy, but if they turn out to be a total bag of shit, I just can't bring myself to enjoy the music, no matter how good it might be.

kamen ,

I hope the EU handles that. I'm happy that I'm not in the US.

kamen ,

Yeah, sure. Even if what they say about the OS resource usage is true, it's only a fraction of the total usage. A lot of the multiplatform software will use the same resources regardless of the OS. Many apps eat RAM for breakfast, doesn't matter if it's content creation or software development. Heck, even smartphones these days have have this much or more RAM.

I won't argue, I just won't buy an Apple product in the near future or probably ever at all.

kamen ,

The irony is that people create these tools mostly because they're frustrated by the limited customisation options provided by default. If Microsoft ever listens to feedback, it's quite limited, and it takes ages for the new stuff get implemented; moreover very often you just about get used to something and the rug gets pulled from under your feet.

kamen ,

Imagine having so much time to complain.

kamen ,

What if I don't need anything to deter me from playing League of Legends? I've never tried it and don't want to.

kamen ,

... or by your ability to steal from others and getting away with it.

kamen ,

Wow, that's even worse than calling the whole computer "the CPU".

kamen ,

... or just add it to the bottom of the list that you weren't going to finish before you die anyway.

kamen ,

Enjoying tech is one thing, wanting touchscreens everywhere is another. If they were so cool as an input device, all the cool kids would have ditched their mechanical keyboards from their desks.

kamen ,

You can usually see this as a notification - and tapping on that notification should open the file, wherever it is. As for the specific location, I'd expect it to be /storage/emulated/0/Download most of the times.

kamen ,

Make sure to update your Ad Blocker settings to include the whole site.

kamen ,

Cool! Now I still feel like I'm lacking purpose, but I'm spending extra money!

kamen ,

I started using Opera at version 9 point something and was a happy camper for a long time. It was a great browser, but its biggest problem was compatibility - more and more sites were behaving strangely and more and more the Opera folks had to patch things on the browser side. I stopped using it around the time the first alpha version of Vivaldi came out. Yes, Vivaldi had a lot of catching up to do at the beginning, but it was functional enough for a daily driver. Opera's first Blink-based version was some kind of a joke - it didn't even have a proper bookmarking system - it was as if everyone was assumed to have 15-20 bookmarks on their start page and that's it. Anyway, they lost all my trust when they sold out later on.

I'm willing to give Firefox a chance regarding the whole manifest v3 drama, although I see the Vivaldi folks opposing it (not sure how much they'll be able to do once they have to merge the MV3 stuff). My biggest hurdle with Firefox right now is the lack of native mouse gestures. Yes, it's somewhat possible to do it with extensions, but the 1% of the pages it doesn't work on (I know, I know, intentional limitation for all extensions) is enough to break my flow; gestures are so ingrained into my muscle memory at this point that I don't see myself using a browser without them supported the way they are in Vivaldi.

kamen ,

There's SponsorBlock for that.

kamen ,

SponsorBlock is IMO not that hard to set up, and I haven't even seen YouTube actively fight against its use; the problem is that the sponsor segment timestamps are community-sourced, which means 1) they might not yet be submitted by the time you watch a recently published video and 2) they're often very lazily done (but of course both are better than nothing).

kamen ,

Rotate the controls the whole car 90 degrees CCW.

kamen ,

Yep, steer perpetually to the left. Maybe play Beyonce in the background.

kamen ,

Where I am people do not trust people and shopping carts are coin operated.
