Proxmox - Slow network speed

I've noticed recently that my network speed isn't what I would expect from a 10Gb network. For reference, I have a Proxmox server and a TrueNAS server, both connected to my primary switch with DAC. I've tested the speed by transferring files from the NAS with SMB and by using OpenSpeedTest running on a VM in Proxmox....

Linus Tech Tips (LTT) release investigation results on former accusations (x.com)

There were a series of accusations about our company last August from a former employee. Immediately following these accusations, LMG hired Roper Greyell - a large Vancouver-based law firm specializing in labor and employment law, to conduct a third-party investigation. Their website describes them as “one of the largest...

You can old nvme -> SATA -> new nvme with any old SATA drive you have lying around.

lemming741 ,

I've only ever used Connect. It's not perfect but it's good enough I haven't wanted to switch up.

And it's actively developed lol

lemming741 ,

Google stuff often hard codes 8.8.8.8, so unless you're forwarding all port 53 to your pihole, it's probably still getting out. Do the smart thing like I did and spend thousands of dollars on a proxmox host, virtualize opnsense, and tell Google where to stick it.

lemming741 ,

But that's boring lol

Why is replacement for home device controls so complicated?

I recently learned about Home Assistant here on Lemmy. It looks like a replacement for Google Home, etc. However, it requires an entire hardware installation. Proprietary products just use a simple app to manage and control devices, so can someone explain why a pretty robust dedicated device is necessary as a replacement? The...

lemming741 ,

Pretty much, yes.

I think you're underestimating the computing power of these devices. If it has WiFi, it has an operating system.

You're looking for something like ESPhome maybe. It's a project from the same people that do home assistant. There's a web server (and/or local API) available that allows you to toggle outputs locally, your browser directly to the microcontroller.

From the wifi wikipedia page> Hardware>Embedded Systems

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wi-Fi

Increasingly in the last few years (particularly as of 2007), embedded Wi-Fi modules have become available that incorporate a real-time operating system and provide a simple means of wirelessly enabling any device that can communicate via a serial port. This allows the design of simple monitoring devices. An example is a portable ECG device monitoring a patient at home. This Wi-Fi-enabled device can communicate via the Internet.

I have a Honeywell t9 that is homekit enabled

Also the density they're planted at. Tree farms have the spacing down to a science for maximum growth per year per acre.

Using optimistic numbers from my workplace--

Is an extra 3% a year worth the 20% more work you're doing?

I use photo prism but be aware they paywall features

lemming741 ,

I've had good luck with the two inland nvmes I got from microcenter if you're trying to save a buck. Samsung 970s have been good too, I've got 8 of them running at work.

lemming741 ,

You're right, they're trying to get you into the service so when the price goes up there is inertia and friction to leave.

The allure of RDR2 was lost to me when I realized it was just GTA Wild West

Wired network doorbell cameras are much harder to find, and they are double the cost

Question of recommended home camera system

A friends mother that I used to rent a room from asked me to help her set up an outside home security system with motion sensors so she could watch the neighborhood cats cat around in her yard. I thought I'd screenshotted a previous Lemmy thread that had a perfect recommendation, nope. Can't find it....

I run frigate, and home assistant. Frigate alone doesn't have any auth, which is fine on my lan but it complicates remote access. I put it behind caddy with basic auth, but I'd like to find a more elegant solution.

Frigate just released v13!! I can't wait to try it out this weekend

Ultimate partner-approval-factor is Lutron Caseta. The Diva line is what I used.

That's for sizing equipment, but in the top left you can change the design conditions to get two points and interpolate between them.

lemming741 ,

I put a wemos d1 mini in mine since all I need to do is mash the existing Clean button. The internal MCU runs on 3.3v, the buttons are pulled low and activated by the same 3.3v rail, so all I had to do was flash it with ESPhome and wire the low side of the buttons to a gpio. I wanted to read the LED state but the multiplex scheme wasn't worth decoding. I did use the single analog pin to measure battery voltage, and an input for the roller and blower motors.

I used Shark Ion RV750 and RV750N. Basically no parts cross over but the layout is very similar. Both were straightforward to interface with and even had a little slot the board fit in!

lemming741 ,

I bought them used, so I don't know about initial setup if you bought a brand new one. But yeah the shark isn't even on my wifi, just the esphome.

Share your favorite automations

I've been running HA for a while, and it's been working well; I haven't had to change much in a few months. That being said, it's fun to tinker with it, and I'm curious to hear what kind of automations the rest of the community is using. What automations are you most proud of? What are your favorite? What kind of interesting...

The reason for the stupid lockout. Pretty ingenious, but yeah they all lie. The worst offenders are heat pump dryers. I think they're gaslighting their customers.

lemming741 , (edited )

Similar to forwarding all DNS traffic to my pihole, I also forward 123 to the opnsense NTP server.

lemming741 ,

I've never used either zigbee or z-wave. Matter is vaporware as far as dimmers go.

I went with lutron caseta, their Diva line is really nice. And now they have 2 button pico remotes that aren't fugly.

VL53L0X can measure distance to 2 meters

Honeywell ABP pressure sensor and an aquarium pump could make a bubbler tube sensor

Can you measure flow from the tank to the furnace instead?

lemming741 ,

But a company is a sum of these (and other) people. In this case, it's a draw at best, not a win.

lemming741 ,

You need an actuator that takes a proportional input signal. 0-10vdc is common. You'll just need a 24vac to 10vdc power supply for the manual potentiometer.

lemming741 ,

Nice. I don't know about the torque requirements or mounting dimensions of your existing (or new?) damper so double check those. Kinda sucks that they don't make one that takes the pot signal directly. I know a lot of lighting dimmers are 0-10v but how they are powered and interact with that damper is uncharted territory.

Pi-Hole or something else for network ad blocking?

I've been aware of pi-hole for a while now, but never bothered with it because I do most web browsing on a laptop where browser extensions like uBlock origin are good enough. However, with multiple streaming services starting to insert adds into my paid subscriptions, I'm looking to upgrade to a network blocker that will also...

lemming741 ,

I run pihole on proxomox, and also opnsense in the same box. Then you can forward all port 53 traffic to your pihole. Some devices have hard-coded DNS that will bypass the DHCP DNS.

lemming741 ,

Yup. It's got built in browser based text reader and an audio player.

FYI, readarr needs separate instances for audio and text. Wasn't worth the hassle for me
