It seems to be seen across all platforms.

What I find interesting is that no one is asking about the quality of code, nor do they seem concerned about the dependencies but they do care about that one package/app/program of any size they see and don't immediately know why it's there.

lemmyingly ,

Hopefully you're not feeding https://globe.adsbexchange.com/

It was an open community and then the person who ran the server sold it to a corporation for over a million dollars. I believe the community strongly dislikes the person and spun up their own website and server https://globe.airplanes.live/

What do people think of their hardware in general?

I have some caddies HDD and NVMe. I think their gear is fairly mid. some aspects are quite nice but other aspects is dog water.

As a comparison against Anker, the cables are thinner - almost as thin as the cheap unbranded cables. Or at least this is what my ugreen cables are like.

Should I learn Docker or Podman?

Hi, I've been thinking for a few days whether I should learn Docker or Podman. I know that Podman is more FOSS and I like it more in theory, but maybe it's better to start with docker, for which there is a lot more tutorials. On the other hand, maybe it's better to straight up learn podman when I don't know any of the two and...

lemmyingly ,

On the same machine I have Docker running as root and not as root. I choose which version, root-ful/root-less depending on what the container needs to do.

I think the only advantage is that Podman runs as root-less out of the box, where with Docker you have to do a few extra steps once it's installed.

The comic book strips on Lemmy seem to be depressing.

Mod fatigue because existing mods limit the number of people on the mod team to a size that makes them do too much work?

Eg. If a mod team only wants 5 individuals on the team and the community has 1000000 subscribers, then that's on them.

I'm a believer that the size of a mod team should be proportional to the size of the community; modding should be as casual as submitting a post/comment.

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate people putting in effort to try to make life better for everyone, I just think the fatigue is self inflicted.

Google Allows Creditors to Brick Your Phone (lemmy.world)

I installed NetGuard about a month ago and blocked all internet to apps, unless they're on a whitelist. No notifications from this particular system app (that can't be disabled) until recently when it started making internet connection requests to google servers. Does anyone know when this became a thing?...

lemmyingly ,

Since when are they allowed to lock you out of your purchased property without a court order?

That's an oxymoron. Creditors have the ability to lock you out of a device you haven't paid for yet. Standard terms and conditions in B2C and B2B; you don't own it until you've paid for it in full.

Also locking you out of a device you don't own yet is cheaper than taking you to court.

lemmyingly ,

Some add this as an additional fee and others include it in the annual price.

lemmyingly ,

I stick with the big name registrars and then just use the cheapest for that TLD.

IRL I only know of one person who uses Linux as a desktop computer.

lemmyingly ,

I'm an imposter. I run Win11 because work and home needs require some Windows only software. I do run Linux servers and i use WSL. So that one person I know isn't me.

Android phone saving metadata for screenshots (i.ibb.co)

I always remove this data from my screenshots before sharing, but is there any way to prevent this from happening in the first place? I've searched and searched, but all I can find is information about how to remove the data after the fact, which I already know how to do, but it would sure be nice if it never got added in the...

lemmyingly ,

The only meta data saved is the Android software version.

My Samsung S21 screenshots show "Android UP1A.231005.007.G991BXXS9FXAK"

Generally when you share media via social and messaging apps the meta data is stripped automatically. So for the most part everyone is perfectly fine even with regular media where you have things like geolocation meta data enabled.

lemmyingly ,

It's a standard Android thing.

Do you care if people know what Android device you're using?

lemmyingly ,

Why do you care if people know what Android device you're using? To me this is a non-issue.

Social media and messaging apps strip meta data when you share media, so for the most part no one can see the information you care about. It's only when you start sharing content via services like OneDrive where people will be able to see the meta data.

Clearly you didn't read my comment... Did you read the first thing I said and went full on blind rage or something? Read it again for the insight

You could disable most of the services running, reintroduce one, see how it performs. Once satisfied reintroduce another, so on and so forth until you've fingered out what is at issue.

lemmyingly ,

Could you use an alternative machine as a temporary machine until you get it resolved?

And do you actually need all of them running 24/7 or are at least some of them nice to haves?

lemmyingly ,

Imagine being part of the EU and then deciding to leave...

There are many opinions about practically everything - even within STEM. I'm sure some will want an alternative wiki if Wikipedia doesn't state the opinion that they agree with.

Avast fined $16.5 million for ‘privacy’ software that actually sold users’ browsing data (www.theverge.com)

Avast, the cybersecurity software company, is facing a $16.5 million fine after it was caught storing and selling customer information without their consent. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) announced the fine on Thursday and said that it’s banning Avast from selling user data for advertising purposes.

I tried Windows Defender a couple of years ago for an entire year. I thought it was dog water. The anti-ransomeware feature was the only nice thing about it. I now use BitDefender.

lemmyingly ,

So companies like Proton and BitWarden are harvesting your data with their free tiers?

lemmyingly ,

At least once every 6 months I come across a top Google result trying to download malicious scripts. The web searches are innocent, eg. "Iso standard metric thread" or "bee keeper hive monitor", which are both search terms in the past where a top result had malicious scripts.

lemmyingly ,

Sounds like a horrible internet experience. No thanks.

lemmyingly ,

In the country I reside, everyone pays for the roads through income tax. Vehicle owners pay emissions tax. I think this is fair since everyone relies on the roads even if they never travel down a road themselves.

lemmyingly ,

How do you know if you don't already know the package name?

I have to always Google for the package name, which similarly is what I do to find a Windows installer but instead of the name it's download link.

lemmyingly ,

Not everyone is a developer, but the vast majority of people use Windows. When an issue arises, it's easier for a non-programmer to search for help than look at code.

lemmyingly ,

Interestingly, I like to keep my network connected devices up to date. Why would I disable that on any OS?

For me, candy crush et al was never installed on my Windows computers by default, both on home and pro versions. There were install shortcuts, but never the actual programs themselves.

lemmyingly ,

Thanks!

It's not about if you're important or not, it's about if you become important to someone.

What happens when you share a link to an image? Does Lemmy just save the link or does it make a copy of the image?

A pair of glasses should be a tiny fraction of the weight of the headset though.

I believe glasses weigh around 10-50 grams and the headset is 600 grams

Does anyone keep a list of words/phrases used in the world and what they actually mean?

Funny guy.

I disagree that Reddit's R&D spending is a lot. Look at any FAANG/FANGMAN/MAMMA company; their annual R&D spending is significantly higher.

lemmyingly ,

I think this method should be the top answer.

I connect directly to devices without a router most working days for work and this is the method we use because it's simple and effective.

lemmyingly ,

Is there an easy method to know the self assigned IP address of the other machine if it's run as headless?

The only methods I can think of is using something like Wireguard to see what IP addresses are talking, or ping all 32k IP addresses to see which responds.

Boost hasn't stopped working. I'm still using it and I've used it everyday.

I have Boost for Lemmy and Reddit. Their icons are identical.

I see no difference between most big tech companies and Reddit in terms of selling user data. Reddit is just being more forthcoming with it instead of allowing users to figure it out eventually.

Reddit: 'We Are in the Early Stages of Monetizing Our User Base' (www.404media.co)

Reddit said in a filing to the Securities and Exchange Commission that its users’ posts are “a valuable source of conversation data and knowledge” that has been and will continue to be an important mechanism for training AI and large language models. The filing also states that the company believes “we are in the early...

Why do you believe they wouldn't legally be able to?

I've also been the one on the opposite side of the classroom. I was lab based, so we didn't use Turn it in.

With a reasonably sized class, you can easily spot which students have worked together because their reports tend to be shockingly similar.

I agree that you get a feel for them with informal conversations and you can see how their submissions tie up with your informal conversations.

I used to tweak the questions year on year. I've suspected there is a black market, an assignment exchange, or something because I caught students submitting work from previous years. They were mainly international students that were only there for their masters year.

Interestingly last week a UK network provider had a day - 2 day outage across the entire UK by the sounds of it.

lemmyingly ,

Lemmy should have shined when the API kicked in, but we had a number of users being shouty ass hats that probably helped to drive users away. Fortunately they seem to have quieten down since for one reason or another, but Lemmy adoption doesn't seem to have increased again yet - maybe one day.

lemmyingly ,

I didn't take any notice of which instances they were from. The people I'm thinking of didn't talk about politics - they were shouty about other things.

lemmyingly ,

I wonder when the invites will be sent out. I'm curious how much a share will cost and I'm curious about who these 75k loyal users could be. Will it be the same group that got the free NFTs, as they were only given to the top contributors weren't they?
