There are certainly hobbyists making good content. Most of the great content is from people making a living off it. They have time and resources to devote to doing deep dives into subjects that hobbyists just generally don't. The bigger problem as far as filling the internet with crap goes is all the react content and people making clips of other people's stuff that adds nothing to it and whatever YouTube shorts are supposed to be.

lightnsfw ,

I wish the edc community on Lemmy was active

lightnsfw ,

I generally don't carry that much on me. Phone in left pocket, Leatherman, keys, and pen in right pocket. Wallet and notebook in back pockets. Any more than that goes in my work backpack.

lightnsfw ,

To get in from outside obviously needs the vehicle to unlock, so it has to be jump started.

and how do you get to the battery to do that if you can't get inside?

lightnsfw ,

Well at least there's a way in... Lot's of trouble could be save by simply having a mechanical key.

lightnsfw ,

Where the fuck do these people assholes think their "trillions of dollars" come from? People need to have money in order to spend it. If you put everyone out of work then theirs not going to be anything left for them to spend on your bullshit products and services.

lightnsfw ,

I am working on 100% RDR2 and the last bit I have to do is the gambling challenges. The last blackjack one is to win after hitting 3 times or something ridiculous like that. I sat there just playing blackjack through all 3 Robocop movies just hitting on every hand as fast as possible and I still didn't get it.

I was explaining to my daughter about the differences between Gimp and Photoshop and saw that Adobe had a page that claimed to compare the two. It never compares the two. It barely mentions Gimp. (www.adobe.com)

I expected ridiculous propaganda from Adobe, but they give absolutely no reasons why Photoshop is better than Gimp and list a bunch of things that Gimp can do too....

Amazon Mulls $5 to $10 monthly price tag for unprofitable Alexa service, AI revamp (www.reuters.com)

Amazon (AMZN.O) is planning a major revamp of its decade-old money-losing Alexa service to include a conversational generative AI with two tiers of service and has considered a monthly fee of around $5 to access the superior version, according to people with direct knowledge of the company's plans.

lightnsfw ,

Imagine if most new houses came with “Alexa” switches and electric plugs.

Oh boy a bunch of added expense to get the light switches swapped out with ones that don't spy on me.

lightnsfw ,

You realize not all apartments are located in big cities? Plenty of people live in small towns with no or shitty public transportation.

lightnsfw ,

My non EV is still perfectly serviceable and I don't like all the superfluous electronic touchscreen bullshit they're putting in modern vehicles so I'm going to keep driving it until the wheels fall off.

lightnsfw ,

Yes. Preferably an option in the form of a small single cab pickup truck with a full size bed.

lightnsfw ,

The problem is they integrate that shit with the functions you do want like the radio and AC and then make you operate it all through a god damn touchscreen so that if you get on the highway before you realize you forgot to turn the shitty lane assist off you now have to take your life in your hands to disable it or risk it ramming you into that ladder or pothole or something because it doesn't want you to change lanes abruptly.

lightnsfw ,

They just pass those problems on to their customers these days.

lightnsfw ,

If that happened I'd buy one. A truck would make a lot of sense for me but I hate the ones that are available so much I couldn't stomach buying one. I just make due with my old civic and borrowing my dads colorado when I need to move big stuff.

lightnsfw ,

Ford and Hyundai have tried to bring service to that market with the Maverick and Santa Cruz

They didn't try very hard. The Maverick doesn't have a single cab or full size bed option and the santa cruz looks like a SUV with 1/4 of the back chopped off.

Here's a comparison of a 2008 Ranger vs. a 2022 Maverick to show what I mean better. They're roughly the same size but you lose so much with the Maverick.

2008 RANGER
Height 67.7 in.
Length 203.6 in.
Width 69.4 in.
Wheelbase 125.9 in.

2022 MAVERICK
Height 68.7 in.
Length 199.7 in.
Width 72.6 in.
Wheelbase 121.1 in.

lightnsfw ,

Why can't we just accept that the KEI is less safe then?

lightnsfw ,

It's the same shit as with smartphones. "If people wanted a headphone jack/removable battery/SD slot/whatever then why are they still buying smartphones?" BECAUSE THERE ARE NO OPTIONS THAT HAVE WHAT THEY WANT. I haven't bought a phone since 2017 and I won't until forced into it by circumstances. We literally can't vote with our wallets because what we want isn't on the ballot.

lightnsfw ,

What if my phone is sitting in the cup holder in the center console... What if I sit it on the passenger seat and it slides of on a turn and slams into the dash? Will they assume I've been in some horrible accident.

lightnsfw ,

I got to like 98% in RDR2 before I realized the gambling ones were going to be a giant pain in the ass. At that point I was in too deep to give up. I watched all 3 Robocop movies in one sitting and still didn't complete the last blackjack one. Eventually got it but that was a frustrating experience.

lightnsfw ,

Yea I was like looking for a solution online because I was like "there's no way you're just supposed to brute force this" and came across so many people that were like "no there's no trick but I got in like 30 minutes"

lightnsfw ,

You don't plug your phone in during your naps?

lightnsfw ,

usually by naptime mines down to like 30-40% and the nap is about right to get it back to ~80ish. Mines pretty old though I guess it's different with newer ones and fast charging.

lightnsfw ,

and then df-ed a couple gigs of /dev/zero straight into /dev/sda

do you mean dd ?

lightnsfw ,

There was nowhere close to the number of humans or level of complexity that there is today when those systems were in place.

A PR disaster: Microsoft has lost trust with its users, and Windows Recall is the straw that broke the camel's back (www.windowscentral.com)

It's a nightmare scenario for Microsoft. The headlining feature of its new Copilot+ PC initiative, which is supposed to drive millions of PC sales over the next couple of years, is under significant fire for being what many say is a major breach of privacy and security on Windows. That feature in question is Windows Recall, a...

lightnsfw ,

My job is in the early stages of planning for updating everything to windows 11. I just got my testing VM with it the other day which is my first experience with it and I had an almost physical reaction to how bad the gui looks when I first logged in. I haven't even done anything with it and I already hate it.

On the other hand the Linux VM I set up at home to test my personal stuff out on has been going swimmingly.

lightnsfw ,

Installing Linux is a pretty trivial process at this point. Not much additional work beyond what already comes with setting up a new laptop. Especially of you've already done it before.

lightnsfw ,

Yea, if it's anything like my tech job the peons were raging about it in their group chats while every successive manager up the chain raved about how great it was and how much progress they were making to the guy above him and silencing any dissent.

lightnsfw ,

Yea, Doom being that old kind of makes me feel better. Thinking about how old Playstation games are though... that makes me feel like time is spinning out of control.

lightnsfw ,

*turns into dust*

lightnsfw ,

Usually I don't notice but it was pretty jarring in Book of Boba Fett. The guy was all dusty living in a desert and then he smiles and his teeth are blindingly white. I was like.. Damn Disney you can't afford the makeup department to dirty those up a bit?

lightnsfw ,

Every update :

"Let's get Recall set up for you!!!!" <microscopic cancel button>

lightnsfw ,

Yeah but there's no reason to make it easy for them. Every picture of you they don't have is one less to add to their data.

lightnsfw ,

I've had similar issues with copilot where it seemingly pulls information out of it's ass. I use it to do fact-finding about services the company I work for is considering and even when I specify "use only information found on whateveritis.com" it still occasionally gives an answer I can't verify in their docs. Still better than manually searching a bunch of knowledge articles myself but it is annoying.

lightnsfw ,

Maybe they should branch it off. Have one for making shit up purposes and one for search engine. I haven't found the need for one that makes shit up but have gotten value using them to search. Especially with Google going to shit and so many websites being terribly designed and hard to navigate.

lightnsfw ,

Light beer is for drinking while you're in the hot sun all day and it's great for it.

lightnsfw ,

I want to be in space by myself

lightnsfw ,

Because of all the noisy motherfuckers around me all the time.

lightnsfw ,

The keyboards are garbage too. Can't stand typing on laptop keyboards and every one I've tried (mostly Dells at work) has been shit for the last 15 years. I bought a $10 bluetooth keyboard for my tablet that's a better experience and smaller than a laptop for fucks sake.

lightnsfw ,

Yea I have an old Toshiba Satellite laying around that has an awesome keyboard. It's too old to really do anything with but I love the design of it. The annoying thing is that Bluetooth keyboard I mentioned is compact as most laptops yet it still manages to have a good tactile feedback when you type on it and it was cheap so we know it can be done. Most laptops just feel "squishy" and start missing keystrokes if you type too fast. The worst I've encountered was one of the ones Microsoft offered for the Surface that was just a solid rubber thing. The keys didn't actually press at all. I can't understand what they were thinking with that. They had another option with actual keys but it wasn't very good either even by laptop standards.

lightnsfw ,

Cool dad, I just wanted you to be proud of me but I guess you can use it to attention whore if you want...
