lud ,

Damn 20 ms ping.

Edit: Wait, you are probably just on WiFi.

Fear me Unix-like users!

lud ,

I am young so I might change my mind, but I have never tried and I probably never will, since I will just fail anyway.

If I happen to find someone by chance then that's cool but realistically that's never ever gonna happen, so I will be alone but that's life.

An average bad status quo is probably better than a failing low.

lud ,

Reviewing the actual logs which collect data over long periods is more reliable.

Btw where the fuck did they say that they never visited the place? For all we know they have worked for the library onsite for months or even years.

this is what being online 24/7 does to a person.

Yeah, I know what you mean...

lud ,

Lol.

I just found stupidity and it's amusing to question them.

lud ,

Any registrar allows you to host your own nameservers. You just point to your server from the registrar console.

lud ,

Yeah, you have to pay for that feature on cloudflare but considering that they are so cheap I think it's not so bad.

Every other registrar I have seen allows it though (they are usually more expensive since they earn a profit on registrations.)

No one does that. It's just a stupid joke.

    lud ,

Yeah, why not. If you don't have anything important on the VM you can do whatever the fuck you want.

    lud ,

The VM will stop working yes. You could use snapshots before though.

    lud ,

To be fair, Factorio experimental is more stable than 99,99% of released games.

    lud ,

Not everyone has the infrastructure, budget, interest, and/or experience for self hosting.

I personally use obsidian synced using GitHub. It breaks way too often with file conflicts but when it works it just works. If you do the thing and you do it right and you don't fuck it up, it works! It just works!

I would gladly pay for obsidian sync if it weren't so outrageously expensive.

    lud ,

Yeah, internet explorer is integrated deeply in places you wouldn't expect.

    lud , (edited )

Nah, mostly it's just done stupidly many many years ago but MS being MS wants backwards compatibility.

Even MMC needs internet explorer for some stupid reason. It uses it to show HTML files or some shit.

    lud ,

Also, hundreds of mobile hotspots will impact the performance of all nearby wireless networks.

I wonder if Google actually has WiFi engineers. It's not something you need to set up everyday. Still they have the money to hire a company that specialises in WiFi.

    lud ,

Don't worry, not a single consumer will buy extended support. They won't even install crucial security updates to their computer without being forced to by Microsoft.

    lud ,

Obviously depends on the company but well run companies shouldn't have any problems unless they have very specialised machinery but those probably already run Win XP or some shit.

And no company should seriously expect free software support for the end of time.

    lud ,

Of course it's worse for motorbikes. Everything about safety is worse for motorbikes.

    lud ,

What about trying to reduce deaths?

    lud ,

I don't think they are saying that the drivers are fat. Or at least it would be insane to say that society shouldn't care about the safety of fat people.

It's more likely that they said that the cars are fat which they are.

    lud ,

Then add some exceptions to cars that aren't as bad for the environment like electric cars.

Maybe exclude batteries for the weight calculation.

It isn't a hard problem to solve.

    lud ,

learned that they had a system with local admin attached to the corporate network that somehow IT didn't know about. They were using that to host their repos.

That's called shadow IT and is a huge security risk.

Yeah, PET is great for recycling.

Here, 87% of all PET bottles are recycled.

    lud ,

Glass weight quite a lot which might make them worse for their transport 🤷

It's also obviously more expensive for everyone.

    lud ,

I live in the Nordics which all have a pretty good recycling rate overall.

    lud ,

    Pant is great.

    lud ,

If Nintendo wants to hit you with so many invalid lawsuits that you're forced to fold then this certainly won't stop them.

The thing is that we don't know if the lawsuits are invalid.

    lud ,

I use liked songs exclusively. I mostly use shuffle but I also unlike and like songs that I rediscover in my enormous (≈5000 songs) liked list so the songs end up at the top.

So the songs at the top are the songs that I am listening to currently. If I want something I haven't heard in a while I just scroll down or use (the suboptimal) shuffle.

Unliking and liking used to be two clicks but now It's 4 or 6 depending on the song and if it's in another playlist or not.

I can't understand why they couldn't just add two buttons. Modern devices have plenty of screen real estate.

When they tried this last time people got outraged any they rolled back the change. Now Spotify is going ahead anyways.

    lud ,

I don't think you need a Plex server to use the tidal feature.

Btw Plexamp seems to be free (with a few restrictions) to everyone now and not just Plex pass subscribers (which admittedly was expensive if you only used Plexamp and didn't have a life time sub like me)

    Source: https://www.plex.tv/plex-pass/

    lud ,

    It's not normal though.

    lud ,

Good question. The website FAQ says that tidal can be used without a webserver but I have never tried it personally.

    lud ,

Touch controls on induction stoves do make some sense though. It simplified cleaning a lot when all you have to clean is a single large pane of glass

    lud ,

Fucking hell, that's reads like they are a kid at a playground that took all the toys and is mad that a parent forced them to share some toys with the other kids.

It's extremely embarrassing that a company of their size acts like this. Grow up.

    lud , (edited )

How long did it stay at the depot until it said returned?

It's very normal for packages to get returned if no one picks them up in a specified time period.

    lud , (edited )

25 USD? I pay 3 USD EUR for their everything included tier.

The question is if a service should be priced for those that very rarely use it.

No other subscription is priced in a way that assumes that you will use it once a month.

You can also read like 5 articles a month for free if you registered.

Btw New York Times has a feature where any paid subscriber can "gift" an article to anybody so they can read it for free without registering or it counting toward the free limit. You can gift 10 articles every calendar month and there is seemingly no limit to how many can use one gift link. The links expire after 30 days though. Which I think is fair enough.

I have already posted a gift link above if you want to read the article.

    lud ,

Isn't most things in life restricted on ones ability or will to pay?

    lud , (edited )

I’m neither registering for them to harvest my personal data, nor paying them to do the same.

    Yet you want ads lol.

Why would you pay full price? It's way cheaper to find a good deal and then cancel after it runs out and then renew when they offer you the deal again, because they likely will.

If paywalls are just as bad as ads, I'm assuming you just want it for free.

Again, it's just an entitled attitude.

    lud ,

Sure, but don't people that write important messages deserve to live?

    lud ,

What ads? I don't see any ads.

Their privacy policy also doesn't seem too bad compared to most services.

and of course you have to make an account, so they sell your info... and then they fire the journalists...

What are you talking about? Do you think a 170 year old newspaper is an exit scam designed to get personal data, sell it, and then fuck off?

    lud , (edited )

Being a journalist is their job.

Why do you think that journalists don't deserve to live by being journalists?

Why don't you do your job for free? Why don't doctors work for free if their job is so important.

Also, where are your alleged "important messages"? I would like to read them.

Btw, I had never heard of your Karl guy but he does get paid for his work. Because of course he does. He even has a patreon.

And I wouldn't really call talking about speedruns to be important messages.

    lud ,

No, that's fair. I am not arguing about that.

I don't give a shit if you pay or not. It's just the attitude of idiots here that's crazy entitled.

    lud ,

They were this close to fixing the whole USB 3.X mess.

    lud ,

Microsoft is kinda obsessed with backwards compatibility so no, that won't happen.

Floppy disks will probably get dropped before USB.

    lud ,

A higher number makes sense and is useful.

    USB 3.2 Gen 2x1 isn't useful.

    lud ,

Windows server obviously isn't intended for consumers so no, it's not cheap. The pricing for Windows Server datacenter is extremely high at 6 155 USD

    lud ,

Yes I know what essentials edition is. I just wanted to point out that datacenter edition is very expensive because it's funny.

Btw, essentials is actually 500 USD and standard is 1070 USD

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/pricing

    lud ,

Yeah, the price is lower if you buy the OEM versions.

I personally believe the msrp to be the actual price though.
