Just click the X button 🤷

Sometimes not seeing a few images is impossible if you want to be sure the restore or whatever actually worked.

I don't live there but doesn't the geek squad fix home PCs and such? Of course they shouldn't touch business PCs that is ITs job or maybe the MSPs, if your work doesn't have an IT department.

lud ,

Of course people have different taste, nothing weird or unusual about that.

lud ,

0.1: You can't use credit card chargeback protection since you will get your account banned.

This or similar actions are very common. Getting chargebacks can be very bad for a businesse even if they haven't done anything wrong. It's also a common type of fraud and the easiest way of reducing that is presumably to never dispute chargebacks and just ban the account and/or credit card.

0.5: If you're blocked by VAC anti-cheat, you're locked out of all your games that use VAC.

That's kinda the point of VAC and you are only locked out of online play.
The good and bad thing about VAC is that it's conservative in handing out bans, so false positives are relatively rare. It does of course reduce it effectiveness against cheating.

5: Porn games can be seen easily my minors/people who find it offensive.

Adult content is a setting which I believe is disabled by default.

Unrelated but I really like their new version of "steam family".

lud ,

Yeah probably one of the only things Apple and Google could decide on together.

lud ,

There are a few more countries where iOS is dominating like for example Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Iceland, UK, Albania, Canada, Japan, Switzerland, and North Korea‽‽‽

lud ,

I had to upgrade to Win 11 today ;(

Hyper-V configuration version 9.3 and above is not available on Win 10.

And yes I know about Linux, my laptop runs it.
But I'm not in the mood of migrating a fuck ton of stuff to another OS.
I have around 20 TB of storage on my PC and redoing everything should be a pain.

I also don't want to forget my Windows knowledge overtime.

I will absolutely disable as much bullshit as possible though. I didn't even have web search in the search bar in win 10 (because it broke the search bar, but still).

lud ,

Yeah, I guess. It's just too much work.

Maybe when I can finally afford to offload all the Plex and piracy tools and especially the media content from the PC to a server. I could also migrate all the services to docker but docker on Windows is a bit annoying to use.

Another factor is that I'm honestly pretty good with Windows and I can fix most issues easily so Windows just works.

Linux mostly just works out of the box, but fixing issues is more complicated for me on Linux and issues have been comparatively common on my Linux laptop.

I also like to do stuff on my PC which can be more complicated to Linux due to a lack of support. Gaming primarily but that is getting much better, I also like to try some professional software occasionally and those often don't work on Linux.

But all things considered I really like Linux, I just won't migrate my main PC any time soon.

lud ,

Yeah, I actually liked the start menu in Win 10. Very customizable and usable if you actually spend some time to set it up.

Now the start menu is barebone bullshit.

lud ,

Well at least it's better than Gnome, lol.

lud ,

I really dislike gnome (obviously) so pretty much anything is better. Win 11 isn't that bad. It's in some ways worse than Win 10 but it's not close to Gnome bad IMO of course.

I run KDE on my laptop (and steam deck) and it's very nice.

lud ,

Nah, I don't agree.

In the end it's still windows 10 with a reskin.

lud ,

But no one is buying this because they can't afford windows 11 or something.

This is for businesses that have trouble with updating or have older hardware that they want to use.

No one is buying this for Windows 10 home.

lud ,

Honestly it doesn't matter because pretty much no consumers are going to buy this no matter the price.

99,99% of Windows users won't even install security updates unless Microsoft forces them to.

lud ,

Yeah I feel the same way.

I admit that I know quite a bit about computers and such but I thought everyone knew private mode isn't intended to stop any tracking.

Pretty sure some browsers by default enable extra tracking protections when in private mode but that's just an extra feature.

lud ,

For real though, why can't people just drive at the speed limit?

lud ,

Traffic is almost always moving faster than the speed limit

So again, why are people seemingly unable to follow the speed limits?

lud ,

Just use cruise control?

Microsoft to separate Teams and Office globally amid antitrust scrutiny (www.reuters.com)

Microsoft (MSFT.O) will sell its chat and video app Teams separately from its Office product globally, the U.S. tech giant said on Monday, six months after it unbundled the two products in Europe in a bid to avert a possible EU antitrust fine.

lud ,

Teams also have great integration with SharePoint which simplified administration and usage.

lud ,

I really like mullvad but I unfortunately had to switch because they removed port forwarding. I first switched to Airvpn which is decent but has a max bandwidth of around 600 Mbits/s and I wanted 1000 at minimum but optimally 2000+.
Proton VPN fits that requirement well.
Unfortunately port forwarding is annoying because they give you a new port every time you connect.

Fortunately there are forks of the VPN app that automatically change the port configuration in qbittorrent. I'm pretty sure I use this one: https://github.com/ravesheep/ProtonVPN-windows

There are similar solutions for Linux.

lud ,

Here is an uncropped version of the image: [NSFW] https://mypmates.club/1972/Miss-November/Lena-Soderberg

Considering this it's more understandable that it's controversial.

lud ,

Also curl cheat.sh/[thing]
It uses multiple sources including TLDR.

lud ,

You can still use reddit with a vpn if you login. The error message even tells you that.

lud ,

Yeah, I had to update and re patch my revanced app

lud ,

Does nebula work for small YouTubers? I imagine it would be extremely hard for a small youtuber to get accepted into a platform like that.

lud ,

As far as I know the majority of YouTubers revenue still comes from youtube ads and not sponsorships.

lud ,

If that is the case then adoption should be easier.

lud ,

Yes, you can obviously already do that.

Whether you trust them or not is a different issue.

lud ,

Imo apps knowing what city I am in is very different from apps knowing exactly where I am. While I wouldn't want to leak either my exact location or my city to someone that shouldn't have access to it, I don't really mind that much (compared to exact) if someone knows the city.

A weather app barely needs any accuracy so it shouldn't have it. But a navigation app does so it gets it.

‘IRL Fakes:’ Where People Pay for AI-Generated Porn of Normal People (www.404media.co)

A Telegram user who advertises their services on Twitter will create an AI-generated pornographic image of anyone in the world for as little as $10 if users send them pictures of that person. Like many other Telegram communities and users producing nonconsensual AI-generated sexual images, this user creates fake nude images of...

lud ,

once non-consensual pornography (which deepfakes are classified as) is made public over half of people involved will have the urge to kill themselves.

Not saying that they are justified or anything but wouldn't people stop caring about them when they reach a critical mass?
I mean if everyone could make fakes like these, I think people would care less since they can just dismiss them as fakes.

lud ,

Or your bad looking brother or the bad looking myself.

Imo people making ai fakes for themselves isn't the end of the world but the real problem is in distribution and blackmail.

You can get blackmailed no matter your gender and it will happen to both genders.

lud ,

Reuters is also good and less USA Centric (at least for their notifications) which is a good thing for me because I am not from the USA, but AP is excellent too). I don't think you can even disable USA news in your "interests" with AP.

Both Reuters and AP are news agencies that sell news (and stuff like photos) to other news companies. So it's very likely that everyone here has read at least some content from them.

Both are also often regarded as among the most reliable and least biased news sources available. AFP is also in that group.

lud ,

Microsoft has been open sourcing quite a lot recently. Does that count?

lud ,

Having an AI button makes sense for people that are buying a product for that trash.

No one is or will be doing that though

For Context here is one Email I got from Affinity yesterday:

To our amazing Affinity community,

Today marks a momentous new chapter in our journey together.

I am thrilled to announce that Affinity is joining the Canva family.

This is a moment of great excitement, anticipation, and profound gratitude for all of you who have been part of our story so far.

We know that those of you who've put your faith in Affinity, some since we launched our very first Mac app, will have questions about what this means for the future of our products. Since the inception of Affinity, our mission has been to empower creatives with tools that unleash their full potential, fostering a community where innovation and artistry flourish. We've worked tirelessly to challenge the status quo, delivering professional-grade creative software that is both accessible and affordable.

None of that changes today.

In Canva, we've found a kindred spirit who can help us take Affinity to new levels. Their extra resources will mean we can deliver much more, much faster. Beyond that, we can forge new horizons for Affinity products, opening up a world of possibilities that would never previously have been achievable.

Canva's revolutionary approach to design democratisation and commitment to empowering everyone to create aligns perfectly with our core values and vision. This union is a testament to what can be achieved when two companies that share a common goal of making design accessible and enjoyable for everyone come together.

I want to express my deepest gratitude to our incredible Affinity team. Your passion, dedication, and relentless pursuit of excellence have been the driving force behind our success so far, and I can't wait to continue this journey with you all.

To our loyal users and the creative community, your support and feedback have been invaluable, we hope this this FAQ will answer many of your questions.

You've inspired us to push boundaries and continuously improve, and we're excited to embark on this new chapter together.

You helped us start a movement.

Today, that movement becomes a revolution.

With heartfelt thanks,
Ash Hewson - Affinity CEO

Another Email I got today:

The Affinity and Canva Pledge

By the Affinity and Canva Teams

As we step into our shared future, we are committing to four pledges that we’re excited to share with the current and future Affinity community.
https://email.affinity.serif.com/Images/2024/March/Pledge/pledges-email-image6.png

Earlier this week we shared the news that Affinity had been acquired by Canva. As the dust settles on the announcement, we wanted to say more about our future and our commitment to the Affinity community.

Since our inception, both of our companies have shared the same mission and vision. We were both founded with the belief that design shouldn’t be limited to those who can afford complex software. Our goal has been to make the highest quality design tools available to the largest number of people with fair, transparent and affordable pricing at our core. By joining forces, we’re looking forward to accelerating this shared vision.

Above all, together, we’re committed to continuing and amplifying Affinity’s position as the highest-quality professional-grade design suite on the market, while continuing to empower millions of designers to unlock their creativity and achieve their goals.

1. We are committed to fair, transparent and affordable pricing, including the perpetual licenses that have made Affinity special.

We share a commitment to making design fairer and more accessible. For Canva, this has meant making our core product available for free to millions of people across the globe, and for Affinity, this has meant a fairly priced perpetual license model. We know this model has been a key part of the Affinity offering and we are committed to continue to offer perpetual licenses in the future.

If we do offer a subscription, it will only ever be as an option alongside the perpetual model, for those who prefer it. This fits with enabling Canva users to start adopting Affinity. It could also allow us to offer Affinity users a way to scale their workflows using Canva as a platform to share and collaborate on their Affinity assets, if they choose to.

2. We will double down on expanding Affinity’s products through continued investment in Affinity as a standalone product suite.

We believe Affinity is the highest-quality professional-grade design suite on the market. It’s non-destructive, super fast, and easy to use. As such, we want to reassure you that it isn’t going anywhere.

In fact, we’re committed to using our shared resources to continue expanding Affinity’s products through further investment in Affinity as a standalone product suite. We’re looking forward to accelerating the rollout of highly requested features such as variable font support, blend and width tools, auto object selection, multi-page spreads, ePub export and much more.

These additions will further cement Affinity as the best advanced design suite on the market and will be released over the coming year as free updates to V2.

3. We will provide Affinity free for schools & NFPs.

Canva, which has pledged 30% of its value as a company towards doing good in the world through its two-step plan, offers premium plans at no cost to schools and NFPs all over the world. More than 60 million students and teachers, plus 600,000 charities and registered nonprofits, benefit from this each month.

We’re excited to extend this programme to include free access for schools and nonprofits to Designer, Photo and Publisher. These professional-grade tools will add enormous value to this free offering, helping millions of students to master the craft of design, and empowering mission driven organisations to amplify their voices and maximize their impact.

We’ll share more details on this in the coming months, including what it means for our education and NFP customers that already use Affinity.

4. We are committed to listening and being led by the design community at every step in this journey.

Affinity and Canva were both founded on the basis that their respective communities – of expert and non-expert designers – deserved better. The tools available were overly complex, overly priced, or both. We know designers deserve better. They deserve the highest quality tools to serve their needs and they deserve to be treated fairly.

We also believe the design community also knows best what it needs. As such, we are committed to shaping our products based on your ideas, your feedback and your needs. To kick things off, we’d love to learn more about what you’d like to see as we embark on this next chapter of our journey. What would you like to see in Affinity? What features have you been dreaming of? What would you love to achieve? We’d love to hear from you here.

Thank you to everyone who has been an integral part of the journey so far. We’re excited for the future and can’t wait to see what we can build together.

With gratitude and excitement,
The Affinity and Canva Teams

You can get Plex lifetime for around 80 USD during their occasional sales.
I bought a lifetime sub for ≈80 USD on 2020-11-30

lud ,

Well on the upside you will keep your access forever and get updates for free for some time still (until v3 comes out).

If you think the workflow is good now, then it shouldn't matter much because you will keep that workflow.

lud ,

Nah not necessarily. It can be a great way to get money early on without venture capital.

Yeah, you will have to provide the service to them forever but they are usually a small bunch so they aren't a big deal if you manage to get big later on.

I suspect most companies that offer lifetime even when they are big have statistics showing that they lose little money or none because the high price means that the average consumer won't use the service for the required amount of years to break even.

lud ,

https://support.pocketcasts.com/knowledge-base/lifetime-access-to-pocket-casts-plus/

Apparently lifetime only applies to the web app or something.

I have never heard of that app so I don't know much.

lud ,

I wouldn't call their licences very cheap for students.

You can apparently only get discounts on their bundle which includes all their programs and the discount gets worse after year one.

It's a decent discount but it's still expensive.

lud ,

Imo it's not great but it's not terrible either.

I would personally consider it bad if I got 20 ping on my personal desktop that's using ethernet and the home is connected using fiber. I would expect something closer to 1-5 ms.

If I had 20 ms on WiFi I wouldn't complain.

lud ,

I am open to chance, I just don't think it will happen.

I just doubt anything will happen unless at least some effort is spent, and that effort is better spent on something more productive and more likely to succeed.
