Discord: Have you lost access to your email? no worries, just regain access to it! (lemmy.world)

I would have expected them to ask me to message them, in order to resolve the issue of not having access to my old email. Instead, they assume that I still have access to it, by simply contacting my email provider!...

lud ,

I doubt bruteforce has been used in one of these attacks. The service should detect a bot entering many combinations per second.

The main problem with SMS is that someone could social engineer the mobile operator support to give them a new SIM.

Probably not something you should worry too much about unless you are in any way a target, but still.

Spotify is raising the cost of Premium subscriptions, again (www.engadget.com)

Spotify is officially raising its Premium subscription rates in the US come July, following reports of the move in April. The platform is increasing its Individual plan from $11 to $12 monthly and its Duo plan from $15 to $17 monthly — the same jump as last year's $1 and $2 price hikes, respectively. However, its Family plan...

lud ,

You can switch to another service any time you want though.

lud ,

It's way cheaper though.

lud ,

Some of us like free stuff though and the post never said that it was supposed to be a list of FOSS projects.

lud ,

looks like there is now a added note they aren't all FOSS.

The post hasn't been edited.

lud ,

Yeah that would have been nice but it would be time consuming for the poster.

lud ,

Why?

lud ,

I think it sounds like there are huge gains to be made in energy efficiency instead.

Energy costs money so datacenters would be glad to invest in better and more energy efficient hardware.

lud ,

Lol, got any more angry words?

lud ,

It can be helpful if you know how to use it though.

I don't use it myself a lot but quite a few at work use it and are very happy with chatgpt

lud ,

South Korea?
I heard they are insane when it comes to exams.

lud ,

Pretty much the same is true everywhere else though. A4 is just extremely common. All documents are printed in A4.

But if you want another size for a sign, blueprint or maybe a postage sticker it's easy to get another size.
If you want A5 just print the same thing twice on an A4 and cut it in half after or cut the paper in half first and then print on it.

If you want A3 you will obviously need a bigger printer (or you just tape two A4 together if it doesn't need to look good.)

lud ,

Nah that will just ruin regional pricing for those that actually needs it.

lud ,

I think the newer wallpaper is artificial.

This wallpaper isn't default anymore since a few years back.

lud ,

Iirc the "light mode" wallpaper they are referring to is the newer one.

When windows 10 came out it only had this one and it is no longer default.

lud ,

Maybe but it's a far cry from Mozilla being an advertising company.

They aren't even remotely close to companies like Google.

lud ,

For you personally? Not much at all. For a real archive future proofing is great.

lud ,

It's obviously not intended to run on an Arduino or something.

lud ,

You can run bitlocker without TPM using a usb flash drive instead. I think you can also store the key in your mind as a password.

lud ,

Microsoft doesn't give out shit. The schools pay for it.

lud ,

In my school they used A1 (or some other A) licences for students. They are probably cheaper than other licenses but they are not free.

I have no idea if they have opted out the competition (whatever that means).

Our class never used any normal windows client OSes (on bare metal anyway). We primarily used Windows server evaluation or Linux depending on the course. I think the other classes primarily used VDI.

Do you have a source for this:

Microsoft will gracefully give lower licensing costs for students if the school opts in Microsoft and opts out the competition.

And what do you mean by opt out? Do they sign a contract saying that they won't use Linux? That seems extremely unlikely, why would they even care? Seems more likely to be an IT policy because they want to manage the devices or they don't want to provide support for non Windows or Mac devices.

If you have no evidence or source, do you know for sure that it's happening (as in you worked in IT or similar role for the university) or it's a rumour you heard?

lud ,

Yeah, here nearly all education is completely free and they even pay you (not a lot but still). You can also take a loan from the government with very low interest and until recently literally zero interest.

Some people even take the loan and put the money in a savings account and make a profit.

lud ,

It isn't always that easy.

Some people are human.

Here is what being a mod can do to your mental health (all three videos are basically the same, watch the one with the best thumbnail or whatever.):

lud ,

The thing is that everyone is affected. Everyone just reacts differently and it might take a bit longer for some people.

It isn't healthy for anyone.

Maybe someone without any empathy whatsoever can be fine, but not anyone else.

Best Local Smart Lock for Privacy/Security

I’m solidly leaning towards a Schlage Connect Lock due to its local only Zwave capabilities (which has the benefit of also extending battery life). I was strongly considering the Aqara U100 for its many features, but based on what I’ve seen I can foresee it being a nightmare to get working locally with home assistant and the...

lud , (edited )

Our smart lock has an external 9v battery plug so the worst case is that you will have to walk to the store and buy a battery before you can unlock using the keypad.

But that hasn't happened to us yet because the lock will warn you before it runs out by beeping.

lud ,

Yeah and anyone can throw a rock through the window.

lud ,

Wouldn't you need to use btrfs for that?

How well does btrfs work with full disk encryption?

lud ,

Its not free (but way cheaper than Photoshop) and unfortunately not available on Linux but Affinity Photo is very good

lud ,

Apparently people's sex lust goes down quite a lot when in space and it's apparently hard to get hard.

But at least some have tried.

lud ,

Sure, but that's pretty hard to do with thousands upon thousands of different governments and government linked entities but at national governments absolutely should.

lud ,

You don't have to worry. Just pay for the domain and you will be good.

lud ,

intentionally don't invest in crypto, because it doesn't produce anything. Any money you make is just taken from another investor, usually because they don't know what they're doing. When you invest in a company, you make products and sell them to customers. Something is created and rarely are people cheated.

Isn't that the same as investing in any currency?

lud ,

No, people absolutely do invest in currency. It's quite a big thing actually.

lud ,

The best format imo is MB/s and Mbit/s

It avoids all confusion.

lud ,

How do workers carry goods from the ports to the stores?

Did they forget what century we live in?

lud ,

That model is much better but from what I heard it's still not optimal for sellers because buyers are still committing a crime so it will still need to happen far away from the law and anyone that could help protect the sellers, like in massage places and sus places of town. Otherwise no buyers would dare buy.

lud ,

Lol, games are far far far less addictive than cigarettes. Cigarettes has nicotine which is an actual addictive drug. Games are fun.

Even comparing them at all is fairly disingenuous.

It's not distracting anyone, I doubt it could even be played if you are in a queue that is moving at 0,3 m/s

lud ,

Yes, games can be addictive for some people but it's comparably very rare. "Punishing" the huge majority of non gaming addicts based on that seems extreme. And I don't think it would matter for addicts anyway.

Addicts would find a computer to play on anyway because they are addicted. In some ways it could be argued that it might even help addicts because using this thing they could get away from their homes and so stuff outside while still having easy access to something they like.

Another difference between smoking and gaming is that smoking harms and annoys everyone around you, while gaming doesn't actually harm anyone. Except if you refuse to eat or something but that would be even more rare.

lud ,

Aka a donut..

lud ,

Depends on how you see it, a hole or a tube. I prefer a hole.

A common joke is that a topologist can't see the difference between a donut and a coffee mug because you can mould a mug into a donut (assuming it has a handle).

Just take this in mind: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Illusory_correlation

People usually don't think about the times that the ads haven't matched up.

For example a person I know got an ad for a specific ice cream she was talking about earlier. What she didn't think about is that it was summer and ice cream ads are incredibly common in summer and so is talking about ice cream.

She likely got many similar ads the days before and after, but she didn't think about them because they didn't match her theory that phones (specifically Facebook in her case) are listening.

I personally think it's extremely unlikely that phones are listening anywhere close to that degree. At absolutely worst they might try and gauge your mood or something, but that feels unlikely too.

First of all there would be a lot of actual evidence (like with network sniffing) of it happening if it were happening and the public and legal fallout that would come after someone figured it out would be enormous

"To be fair, if they did the exact opposite of what they did it's amazing."

Google's call-scanning AI could dial up censorship by default, privacy experts warn (techcrunch.com)

A feature Google demoed at its I/O confab yesterday, using its generative AI technology to scan voice calls in real time for conversational patterns associated with financial scams, has sent a collective shiver down the spines of privacy and security experts who are warning the feature represents the thin end of the wedge. They...

    lud ,

    So no

    lud ,

I take that as a no.

    lud ,

Lol, I'm not saying Google is or isn't doing that. I'm just saying that you are just spewing bullshit without any evidence whatsoever.
