How to get a private car

Hello internet users. Someone in my family is looking to buy a car and wanted some recommendations for a private one. They are looking to buy new, and need Android Auto and CarPlay. I know all new cars suck for privacy by default, but I was hoping someone here could offer some insight as to which cars can be made better and what...

lud ,

I don't know how that's implemented but I suspect it's done without a SIM card since SIM cards exists for authentication and not for functionality. The emergency call is probably done without any authentication or fee.

They might also have something like an Esim that authorises the car to call specific services. I doubt that car manufacturers are paying much or anything at all for the emergency services calls and I doubt they would put in a full connection unless someone paid for it (if the consumer bought smart features for example)

lud ,

Maybe they really want or need a car? They asked for the best car not for the most privacy friendly option in the world.

You don't have to go out and live on a farm in the mountains just because you care about privacy. There are degrees of privacy.

It's drm reasons. At least it's 1080p most streaming services limit it to 720p.

If I recall correctly the iPad isn't 4k and 4k doesn't seem to be supported on any devices that aren't actually 4k. Really stupid but very common.

lud ,

Maybe they don't want too. Maybe they don't like the app. Maybe they don't like the devs.

Why ever make something new?

lud ,

Bazarr is great. When I set it up a while ago I just went with open subtitles and bought a VIP account so it wouldn't take ages to populate all my movies. A VIP account was cheap enough that I didn't mind.

lud ,

That fee also applies to apps published on the app store.

If I understand correctly it only affects apps with more than 1 million annual downloads. I also don't think it applies to marketplaces, only apps. So if fdroid had a marketplace, the devs would pay that fee and not fdroid.

Windows server is still wildly used for ADDS.

I don't think windows server is that threatened by containers.

lud ,

Active directory domain services.

lud ,

Except that they will obviously fine them again and again and again until they comply.

The max fine that can be imposed in such circumstances are enormous.

It also scares other companies from attempting the same bullshit.

What do you guys do when you want to run unmaintained programs? (lemmy.world)

I recently wanted to run tegaki, and my experience is pretty much summed up by the meme. I consider myself fairly tech-savvy, but I just couldn't figure out how to compile it. So I just gave up, downloaded the .exe and put it into a fresh wine prefix. After installing CJK fonts, everything ran fine. Now I'm trying to get gpaint...

lud ,

I just do that to be courteous to the cleaner, so my home isn’t gross.

Scientists Use WiFi to See Through People's Walls (www.popularmechanics.com)

“We developed a deep neural network that maps the phase and amplitude of WiFi signals to UV coordinates within 24 human regions. The results of the study reveal that our model can estimate the dense pose of multiple subjects, with comparable performance to image-based approaches, by utilizing WiFi signals as the only input.”

lud ,

There was an incredibly annoying and useless bot on Reddit that ranked other bots based on comments like that.

lud ,

Depends on what you are hosting I guess. My website is hosted in Finland but there isn't anything illegal on it.

lud ,

Yeah, they seem to have forgotten what time zones are.

lud ,

I don't think this sub should have any more rules.

Ai images can be very funny. And who cares about moldy images? Just downvote.

lud ,

Forgot about that, lol.

So stupid.

I wonder what happens if I downvote you.

lud ,

I don't see any rules either. I thought this community was like the Reddit one with minimal rules. A shame really.

lud ,

I can now see the pinned post so whatever you did worked.

Personally I think all rules should go in the sidebar and not a post but that's just my opinion.

lud ,

Maybe just maybe, they weren't completely serious.

I have been in that sub for a few years, and I do own a few ludicrously powerful flashlights.

It's not a prepper thing at all. It's a "flashlights are fun" thing.

lud ,

Search for images and "LEP flashlights beamshots"

lud ,

Wait, you don't pay bills digitally? Is it not possible where you live.

lud ,

Yeah, Lenovo has owned ThinkPad for ≈ 6 more years than IBM ever did.

lud ,

Who the hell thought that an NFT festival was a good idea and unprotected UV lights?

Maybe the organisers were exposed to gamma radiation lwhen they thought up the event.

lud ,

Stupid takes like that are so ridiculously common on r/piracy and apparently the entirety of Lemmy.

lud ,

It would also solve the North America 60Hz and EU 50Hz issue

Since when is it an issue?

A lot of stuff accepts both and the plugs are different anyways so why does it matter?

Btw most of the world uses 50hz not just the EU.

lud ,

Yeah, but they would be simpler but you would instead have to put powerful DC-DC converters in pretty much everything.

It sounds like a solution to a problem which isn't a big deal. In theory it might be nice but it works fine as it is. We know very well how home AC grids work and charging that would be a mess.

lud ,

Maybe, DC wiring at home will never happen though (except in the form of POE).

lud ,

Absolutely agree.

Here most self-checkouts are often called something like "express checkout" There is often a rule of max 15-20 items per customer (The rule is not enforced in any way, so you are just supposed to follow it for others sake)

lud ,

Honest question. Why host them? Finishing one book can take a while and they are incredibly small.

I just use calibre and sync with my e reader and phone occasionally.

lud ,

Syncing progress seems like a very good reason for hosting. I didn't think of that.

Thanks!

lud ,

Framework seems nice but only 4 ports is a huge deal breaker.

Any way to accelerate traffic between two very distant homes?

Hi guys! Just...that. My parents live in Europe, while my servers are at my home in Asia. Europe home has fiber at about 200Mbps symmetric, and Asia home has 1Gbps symmetric. But due to distance, it's hard to get them to reach very fast speeds at all, being capped at about 1MB/s when transferring files or watching Jellyfin. Is...

lud ,

1 MB/s sounds really terrible. Doesn't seem right.

I haven't tried anything like that personally, but I don't think speeds should be affected that much. Latency should be the main problem.

I assume you are using a VPN; So which one are you using?

As far as I know there is absolutely nothing you can personally do on the WAN side of networking (at least on a normal home connection).

You can't use static routes in the way you're likely thinking.

You can only set up a static route for one hop away. So, static routes don't work over the internet, because there are a lot of routers (hops) in between the two home routers.

If you had a really long fiber cable that stretches all the way to your home in Asia it would work.

What you could do is set up a faster VPN like Wireguard and look for any bottlenecks or issues in either network.

lud ,

That's boring. They could easily have out the entire phone into this thing, if they wanted to.

Update: Emails from Tutanota.com no longer go to Spam in Outlook.

lud ,

Editing a file with vim though ssh on mobile seems like a pain.
