Supreme Court weakens federal regulators with Chevron overturning, threatening net neutrality, right to repair, big tech regulation, and more (www.theverge.com)

The downfall of Chevron deference could completely change the ways courts review net neutrality, according to Bloomberg Intelligence’s Matt Schettenhelm. “The FCC’s 2024 effort to reinstitute federal broadband regulation is the latest chapter in a long-running regulatory saga, yet we think the demise of deference will...

Ironic considering everything they're "overturning" is former Supreme Court rulings that granted all these rights.

Props to Alpine and Kali for disabling this bullshit out of the box (lemmy.world)

Context for newbies: Linux refers to network adapters (wifi cards, ethernet cards, etc.) by so called "interfaces". For the longest time, the interface names were assigned based on the type of device and the order in which the system discovered it. So, eth0, eth1, wlan0, and wwan0 are all possible interface names. This, however,...

Startup discovers what a northbridge is

Debian used to be so good. What happened!? (lemmy.world)

Firefox on Debian stable is so old that websites yell at you to upgrade to a newer browser. And last time I tried installing Debian testing (or was it debian unstable?), the installer shat itself trying to make the bootloader. After I got it to boot, apt refused to work because of a missing symlink to busybox. Why on earth do...

Yeah but at least you dont have to beat up RNG spawned thugs to get the locations while the riddler keeps spamming all the TV screens mocking you for playing the game how Rocksteady intended lmao

I got banned from the Kraken crypto exchange after waiting a year for them to approve me and after providing all my IRL credentials.

Told me I was banned, never to come back, and that they were going to report my fraud attempt to the authorities. Of course they refused to tell me what they thought I did, which didn't make any sense because all I had been able to do was make an account and make a verification request.

Never really even looked at crypto again beyond mining dogecoin for fun.

This central idea is why I hate dune.

Having a so called prophesied savior capable of insane things coming from a distant royal family of some space empire is too stupid to believe in.

You can't be both the underdog and the king at the same time, especially when your own supporters treat themselves as expendable.

mlg ,
@mlg@lemmy.world avatar

Because the vote system inherently supports popularity which creates content masking issues and usually results in communities with mods that want to keep that system.

Stack overflow has this exact same issue where stupid crap gets upvoted and useful stuff gets nuked so users don't see things that would otherwise be important or useful.

Lemmy somewhat avoids it due to the relatively low number of posts, but that could easily change.

mlg ,
@mlg@lemmy.world avatar

I don't get why people think this idea is equivalent to stuff like internet access bans or COPPA, it's a warning label, not an "enter your ID" to access page.

They never banned cigarettes, but putting a giant warning on the box did help in vilifying cigarettes as very unhealthy and wrong.

I doubt it'll go anywhere in this age of government, but its exactly the type of thing I would have gone for if I were tasked with solving a societal issue. It's smart because it has no real effect on access, so social media companies would have a harder time fighting it, but it also gives a big bloody warning which does have a substantial psychological impact on users.

iirc someone did something similar with a very simple "are you sure?" app that gave a prompt asking if you were sure you wanted to post something or send a text. Just having a single prompt was enough for many people to reconsider their stupid text or comment.

Turns out, the difference in the socket is just a few pins here and there, and you can make a 8th or 9th generation Coffee Lake CPU work on your Z170/270 board if you apply a few Kapton tape fixes and mod your BIOS,

Modders giving me a new reason to keep my ye olde z170 mobo instead of just making a new machine with all the nice hardware

The ugly truth behind ChatGPT: AI is guzzling resources at planet-eating rates (www.theguardian.com)

Despite its name, the infrastructure used by the “cloud” accounts for more global greenhouse emissions than commercial flights. In 2018, for instance, the 5bn YouTube hits for the viral song Despacito used the same amount of energy it would take to heat 40,000 US homes annually....

Dunno about Microsoft and AWS but AFAIK Google has been powering all their data centers with "renewables" for a very long time.

I'm pretty sure many of these data centers have dedicated power sources due to the high consumption, and opt for things like hydroelectric due to cost per watt.

And at least there's a serious end product delivered, unlike crypto mining which wastes trillions of hashes to make a secure transactional network.

Google has been pretty crap for a decade now.

I still remember demoing how easily they can manipulate people by searching "Pakistan News" and the results being exclusively all Indian media outlet propaganda way back in 2016.

I really feel like they never got properly exposed for this just because it's a search engine and not a social media, so people didn't care enough about it. Also because Google was still top of the game in most results compared to other sites back then.

Long before I used vim, some dude shared a bunch of vim memes with ":q!" in them.

It was actually vi on some ye olde unix machine, but I remembered the meme and got out, searched up how to use vim, and then jumped back in to edit the file lol.

Successfully uploads file into broken MariaDB with no space left.

Bruh holy hell, glad you figured it out.

Really seems like a fatal design flaw, even basic stuff like sftp has checksums for sanity. I guess it has to do with it not verifying the DB is responding with the correct info or improperly deciding the upload was okay.

mlg ,
@mlg@lemmy.world avatar

This is a normal engine search lol. All the memes are from the AI response feature, similar to Bing's GPT tab.

I still want to see someone slap an airplane grade INS suite into a car and load it up with some maps to see how far it can go without relying on GPS lol.

Not that it would functionally change much, but I find it annoying only self driving cars are still using dedicated navigation setups.

Google Maps has an aneurysm if you're not going above 5mph even though the accelerometer really should have made this a non problem. Its even more dumb to be using your tiny phone receiver for vehicle navigation. GMaps still has to wait until you're past a spot before finally deciding where you actually are.

Lol this happened in Michigan with Covid-19

There were like 10 reported cases total because hospitals would only send for a test with a solid match up of symptoms and if the patient had recently traveled from China.

Then when they opened up testing for everyone after CA and NY started going up in flames, it went from 10 to like 1000 cases reported every day.

All in a span of like two weeks.

Went from meme to pandemic so fast Whitmer closed public schools faster than the schools themselves could.

Oh and then Trump got mad and refused to send aid or allow harsher restrictions lol.

BSD is useful for when you want to program some specialty hardware once and chuck it into the abyss with no updates and without releasing the source code so you can maintain a barely passing level of security through obscurity. Or if you really just don't want to publish your source code for a unix system.

Things like modems and old routers come to mind. Also PlayStation iirc.

Most modern IoT stuff I've messed with uses linux probably because the devs like not having to manually package things and deal with weird edge case bugs. Since they're usually making software updates anyway, published vulns are less of a concern.

If tiktok were a serious threat, the executive branch would have already banned it by now via an executive order.

That's not what happend, instead a whole bill went through congress and got passed with the explanation being "foreign influence" as if American social media platforms don't already do the same thing

This is more about removing foreign competition and not about saving democracy or ensuring security.

DoD already banned it 4 years ago for military because of the actual security threat of data collection.

I just wish their websites reflected to show all their available spins. It feels like you have to go out of your way to get to the spins site because the main page only shows Gnome.

I get that Gnome is RedHat's main thing, but like at least make a button that says "See other excellent DEs". The only thing they have is a button for alt downloads that shows stuff for net install and rawhide.

But American company using Chinese parts to make their drones and sell with "made in USA" markup is fine

MIC just mad they can't sell their crappy 50k per unit drone because a $100 one from AliExpress is doing a better job of dropping grenades and not overheating.
