One one hand av1 has some great advantages and this will force some lagging OEMs to add hardware support

On the other hand snake ass google already split encoding into premium qualities, so they're just gonna set the "free" bitrate so low it may as well be H264.

Google fires 28 employees after protest over Israel cloud contract (www.theverge.com)

Google fired 28 employees in connection with sit-in protests at two of its offices this week, according to an internal memo obtained by The Verge. The firings come after 9 employees were suspended and then arrested in New York and California on Tuesday....

Poor dude doesn't know google already did this themselves by killing their project teams and bringing a team of summer interns every year to decrease the cloud cost of each app.

They don't have to worry because they already own the market on all these apps so any competitor can be bought out or is doomed to fail.

That way they can spend all their allocated budget on new ventures like Gemini.

For example Google Maps has sucked total ******* **** for a whole ass decade now, and the people who made Android Auto have a special place for them in FOSS hell.

Only heat would be from the drive backplain, all the boiling hot CPUs, RAM, and expansion cards are further back.

    Allegedly, the windows kernel scheduler was superior to Linux's CFS scheduler in certain select metrics.

    Except it didn't matter anyway because all of the UWP apps were so crappily made and Microsoft forgot to hire actual devs for their UI so everything lagged and loaded slow.

    Oh and it turns out the windows scheduler also handled multi core pretty poorly so people with new hardware suffered performance losses.

    And Linux upgraded to the EEVDF scheduler which AFAIK makes it even better than before.

    For all the random crap American ISPs have done, the one thing they usually don't do is piracy monitoring unless they get paid a premium to do it.

    Like Disney pays ISPs and other data companies to track torrent peers and report any IPs in the USA. But I bet you at&t would not care at all if they weren't being paid for it lol.

    My only issue with mint is that it is downstream of Ubuntu so I feel like the maintainers have to spend too much effort fixing kinks and bypassing Canonical's dumb ideas.

    LMDE is cool too, but then its too stable and doesn't have all the nice UI features of regular mint lol.

    If Imran Khan sitting in jail can win at a fraudulent election run by the Pakistani army even after his party members were arrested and assasinated, surely the DNC can run a candidate who isn't happy to fund a genocide so they will actually get enough votes to win.

    Imagine trying to convince someone to vote between Hitler and Stalin. Like "Yeah I'll take Hitler please because at least he won't kill all of us equally like Stalin. He actually cares about germany because he's building infrastructure."

    Biden couldn't even hold on to his fake penny throw of sanctioning a whopping 7 Israeli settlers. He could at least pretend to care.

    He still has time to redeem himself with quite literally one of the lowest bars you could ever have, but the DNC is happy losing if it means the USA stays peachy keen with AIPAC.

    mlg ,
    @mlg@lemmy.world avatar

    Biden doesn’t have a solution to a thousand year old conflict then you’re an idiot

    Israel became a thing less than a 100 years ago, and this genocide started 6 months ago.

    This statement is almost as idiotic as your assumption that anyone who disagrees is either brain dead or a Putin bot.

    How low does one have to go to defend someone who has all the power to decide not to fund a genocide. He just approved a sale of 2000 MK84s and 500MK82s as if he wants Israel to finish the job.

    Trying not to be one of those "but did you try" replies, but personally, I would run Fedora xfce spin to see if anything changes.

    Cutting edge kernel modules + minimal X11 DE will rule out stupidity from Wayland and make it easier to try some different settings.

    AMD is supposed to work out of box, but I've heard there are some quirks with certain GPUs in which you may need to set some kernel flags.

    I think whoever wrote it just used the wrong word because yes inertia is dependent on mass, not momentum

    Okay I actually decided to check and I think it just a poorly written explanation of rotational inertia

    A rotating spheroid will oblate when its centrifugal force generates enough inertia angular momentum to slightly flatten it out into a more irregular, elliptical shape.

    If the shape also changes, this would mean distribution of that mass relative to the axis of rotation would also have changed, which if I'm reading this right, affects rotational inertia.

    Because if a vuln gets found or exploited, it gets immediately patched, often with some big backing by OEMs that run on Linux.

    Open source also reduces the likelihood of exploitable bugs going unnoticed because everyone can see and play with the source code by themselves.

    There is a risk of malicious merge requests, but so far that hasn't been a problem besides a university getting banned for pointing out the issue with a live test without telling the devs.

    Much of linux is also designed to be hardened by default because it's used on so much infara. SELinux by itself is a great example because it was essentially created by RedHat and now is a major standard for MAC.

    Windows on the other hand needs Microsoft alone to solve the problem. No one can patch it themselves, and there's no guarantee the patches will work, which has happened several times. I believe print spooler basically had to be disabled because there was no good solution due to implementation.

    The amount of Windows OS specific exploits vs Linux specific exploits kind of shows the results of closed source vs open source.

    The worst vuln I can think of for Linux is dirty cow which is a local priv esc on basically Linux kernels 2.x-4.x which was a big deal when it was discovered because of the range of versions

    Meanwhile windows had eternal blue, a whole remote code execution that existed on every version of windows since win95 that the NSA kept for probably a decade before it was leaked.

    Not to be that guy but is there even any vertical video social media that currently provides what TikTok does as an exact competitor?

    Youtube shorts is so horrendous I have it blocked via revanced.

    This seems more like an excuse to get rid of competition than spyware allegations. It's not like CISA has some big report on TikTok software dump. Everything they do is mirrored by Facebook down to the COPPA violations that congress doesn't seem to care Zuck is abusing.

    If they hadn't locked into amazon appstore, I feel like they could have made it work.

    Either cough up money for Playstore or better yet just make windows store compatible with android and easier to use.

    mlg ,
    @mlg@lemmy.world avatar

    I meant just allowing people to publish APKs to the windows store, not converting every app.

    Although WSA let you sideload apps anyway so I'm thinking maybe Microsoft just didn't see any big profit potential which is why they're shutting down.

    10% FPS drop compared to X11 because of perfect frame requirements

    X11 has literally never stuttered even on the hack that is WSL

    The only time I have actually gotten X11 to crash was an unrelated kernel panic.

    Also no one uses X11 networking by default lmao, its always X forward over SSH, that is definitely secure and still something wayland can't do.

    mlg ,
    @mlg@lemmy.world avatar

    Yeah except Apple has been doing just fine with swift and proper app pausing for years.

    Everything App elements in android reset whenever you swap apps for more than a few minutes. Even all the default gapps do this. They can't seem to hold a context menu open or keep a page loaded when in the background because apparently these elements don't get saved.

    I think the only thing on my phone that has stayed consistent is Firefox, and I can only assume it's because they hacked their way around this by having its own custom saved state since it's a browser.

    We're not bottlenecked so hard for storage or memory anymore, there's really no need to keep enforcing this select feature saved state default.

    Android already uses zram and yet OEMs are still shipping with an additional swap switch because these java apps eat an atrocious amount of memory.

    I can load a fully decked out compiz desktop with a 3D transparent cube and every window animation imaginable and the ram stays at 1.6 GB. Yet android struggles to stay under 2 at idle on a 2d homescreen.

    • No variable refresh rate support

    Yes it does: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Variable_refresh_rate

    • No plans for HDR support

    Wayland still hasn't merged base color support after 4 years and we're still relying on either gamescope (which also runs on x11) or KDE/GNOME experimental

    • No 1:1 touchpad gestures (elementary os not included)

    This is the only valid concern on this shit tier comment.

    Half of these issues used to be common to Wayland, and the other half have nothing to do with display drivers.

    Most of the wayland devs are x11 devs, they aren't stupid and do have real reasons for using wayland, but these aren't those.

    mlg ,
    @mlg@lemmy.world avatar

    Yes my old setup was a 1600x1200 60hz display next to a 1920x1080 75hz display

    Screenshared all the time in discord with no issue whatsoever.

    Tbf this was after some arguably dirty hacks had been added to DEs which instead of locking to lowest refresh rate, it would just run at highest available and anything that had a common factor would be fine like 60/120.

    That being said, I never experienced tearing or stuttering even with a full screen game open and youtube playing on the second monitor, though I think if I gave it enough load it probably would.

    Ended up getting rid of 4:3 monitor because it was like 10lbs and really old, and because I managed to get a free 16:9 lcd.

    Still on same install with XFCE, still works fine.
