Stealing advanced chat bots, that's a great way to describe it.

About every other post I make proudly wears the (edited) badge. I feel you.

#1. The CCCP is Soviet Russia. #2. The requirement is that Bytedance sells tiktok (along with it's proprietary algorithms) to a US based company.

normalexit ,

I would much rather pay for windows than become the product with ads, AI, and analytics.

Luckily this is coming at a time where I can run nearly everything on Linux that I previously needed Windows for (with the exception of a handful of games in my steam library)

normalexit ,

There is a whole class of "influencers" that get paid to shill for everything from liquor to policy on every platform. Tiktok, a foreign company, owns the algorithm, so they can promote whatever they want.

This all seems sketchy, but then I recall citizens united and the fact that billions are spent directly purchasing influence in the actual government. They just don't like some other entity putting their finger on the scale.

I'd much prefer systematic reform where money can't buy influence and companies (US or otherwise) can't spy on their users, yet that will never be on the table because of the money and power Facebook and others have.

I've been thinking about it for a long time. I'll probably never be able to completely separate due to the number of accounts linked to it, but I've been eyeing Proton or similar paid privacy focused offerings.

normalexit ,

It is replacing a privately owned, for-profit business with a public utility owned by.. the public.

There is nothing about net neutrality in either the constitution or the bible. Clearly something like this shouldn't be done.

Roku explores taking over HDMI feeds with ads (www.lowpass.cc)

Roku is exploring ways to show consumers ads on its TVs even when they are not using its streaming platform: The company has been looking into injecting ads into the video feeds of third-party devices connected to its TVs, according to a recent patent filing.  ...

normalexit ,

I'm done with Roku. I have one in every room, but they all need to go.

Some are much more capable of disguising it during the interview process.

In the tech industry around the pandemic there was the great resignation and companies were tripping over themselves to employ as many people as possible. It was great then because you had so many options and they were all seemingly similar job descriptions.

Now the site is shitty and getting a job is terrible. Woo capitalism!

This is a really interesting idea, but a password manager would throw a wrench in it.

I'd assume my password was invalidated or stored incorrectly, so I'd reset, then I'd try to log in, wtf... this website blows.

IRS has launched its free tax filing service, Direct File, in 12 states (arstechnica.com)

"Direct File provides a free, secure option for taxpayers with simple tax situations in 12 states to file their taxes directly with the IRS," the Treasury Department said. "Direct File is easy to use, with no hidden junk fees, and works as well on a smartphone as it does on a laptop, tablet, or desktop computer. Direct File...

The problem is that companies like Intuit have resources/lobbyists and really want to maintain their position in the market.

Your system sounds wonderful though.

Nowadays it's llm powered bots all the way down.

normalexit ,

It's not very sexy, but I just use SFTP and filezilla. Filezilla is available for all the major operating systems, and an ssh server is basically required anyways.

normalexit ,

I have a Samsung S90, and I was able to disconnect from my network after the initial setup. I also set it to default to the last HDMI input at startup, so I never see the TV OS.

I feel like this is subject to change, but a smart TV without an Internet connection seems to still be an option until they take it away.

normalexit ,

I'm so disappointed in Roku lately. I still have a few streaming sticks in my house and one TV (I went all in), and I'm going to slowly replace them with something else.

I have an apple tv and that is nice, but I would love a little open source player that isn't an htpc or super pricey.

He might even claim 82 this year, if we're lucky.

normalexit ,

I feel like this has been common knowledge. Airplane mode is more about "we don't want some asshole talking to their client on the phone while we are trying to do the safety briefing and take off"

normalexit ,

I love Plex for the most part, but this is why I also run jellyfin with my same media collection.

Their stocks are going up with every layoff and costs are going down. It's working marvelously for the executives.

Is it sustainable? God I hope not.

normalexit ,

One of my friends is a developer there, they knew vaguely it was going to happen after a town hall meeting, but didn't know who was going to make the cut.

normalexit ,

I hate that they are laying people off. I do however want to use some machine learning powered adblock, for those harder to block ads. otherwise I don't feel like every app needs an AI assistant. It's bad for the Internet generally and for the power grid.

normalexit ,

I cancelled around the time the password policy changed. I found less and less compelling shows to watch and the old favorites like the office moved on to other services.

It's a bummer they aren't facing consequences for their price hikes and other shenanigans .

normalexit ,

I feel like the window manager is important, but for newbies I also consider the package manager and overall installation process to be very important.

I've had pretty distros that are basically busted after a package fails to install or video drivers are mucked with. An advanced user could fix most of these issues, but this is usually where a new user may go running back to their previous OS.

A good computing experience for me is all my hardware working with minimal fuss and all the software I expect to be available being a few terminal commands away (e.g. steam, developer tools, etc.)

normalexit ,

In a new stadium in my city you swipe your credit card, pick up food or drink in a little monitored area and walk out with your items. It is an interesting idea but it is also creepy. That's probably what stores will be like eventually -- at least the ones with the resources to implement something that expensive and complex.

As far as self checkout, I don't mind it for small orders or when it is more convenient for me at the grocery store. Unexpected item in bagging is a bad consumer experience, and buying produce/alcohol is also a pain. If I feel like I am going to run into trouble I head for the traditional lines.

I really despise the ones at big box hardware stores that show a video of you checking out. I'm not stealing, don't judge me or make me judge myself with that unflattering angle.

normalexit ,

I'd always rather shop at a store with real life helpful employees who are happy to work there because they are treated well and properly compensated. I hope companies continue to see the value in that approach.
