I’d generalize it as Reddit was for people who read the article, and Digg was for people who didn’t. There were other sites for different communities at the time as well like the Chive and their Bill Murray worship.

I gave away something on Reddit recently and found out that DMs aren’t the same between new and old Reddit. I got a reply on old Reddit and thought was the only interested person and latter logging in on a different browser found more messages that I didn’t see on old. The messages from old didn’t show up on the new site as well. What a mess.

I’m not mad about the scraping. The linkedin scraping case pretty much cemented that there was nothing that could be done to stop it. I’m just mad that I can no longer use the app of my choice. No such problem with Lemmy.

If you want to be mad about something relevant, be mad that Windows 10/11 use deflate64 for zipping very large file. By default, deflate64 is not compatible with Python ZipFile nor Gnome’s built in unarchiver app.

I’ve got a high end Intel MacBook Pro and a low end M1 Mac Mini. The Mac Mini runs x86 apps live Civ 6 faster and smoother than the Intel MacBook can.

If the Stack Overflow site remains available then it still serves the same purpose it did before. I personally use ad blockers and don’t pay to use the site, which must not be cheap to operate. The bigger problem is if talented people refuse to share their expertise with people like me because they aren’t being compensated for their efforts.

Not to mention that even if everyone were to switch to public transportation, you’ve still got the issue of RFID cards that track every trip you take on the system. Far cry from subway tokens for privacy concerns.

The train from LA to Vegas is under construction. The problem in Vegas is that the casinos don’t want you leaving their property unless you’re headed to another property they also own. Musk’s tunnel just goes to the convention center and is obviously not a serious solution.

I have a Linux workstation and a MacBook. The arguments about keyboard and trackpad are personal preference at best. You can use whatever external devices you want with the Mac. I used Logitech mice with mine too.

If you want a package manager on Mac use Homebrew. It’s better than you’d expect for a system that doesn’t include a native package manager. I use docker on both Mac and Linux and can’t really tell the difference.

I bought my last MacBook with 64gb ram. It was probably overkill but I didn’t see any reason not to since you can get one refurb for essential 50% off.
It sucks that you can’t upgrade the ram, so make sure you have a good idea what you need when you’re buying the machine. Anyone buying one with 8gb is essentially buying a Chromebook. That’s not adequate for a power user like you.

Base 8GB MacBooks also tend to have base storage, meaning a single NVMe controller instead of dual. If you’re relying on virtual memory then it would make sense to get the Mac that has double the SSD bandwidth. I bought a base M1 Mac Mini for the kids and it’s pretty good for their needs, but they tend to prefer the old i3 win 10 PC connected to the same monitor. The M1 Mini could run Intel Civ 6 faster than my 32GB i7 MacBook Pro could, which surprised me.

Increasing swap on Linux is a great way to save money on cloud servers btw. One nice thing on Mac is that there is no swap file that you need to manage. System handles it transparently. Firefox (and really all modern browsers) require a ridiculous of RAM if you use them like you and I do.

Some of the YouTubers comparing the new MacBook found that the 16GB Air smoked the 8GB version for creative tasks and rendering, but they found no difference between 16 GB and 24GB. Seems like Apple could up the RAM to 12 GB and see a big improvement.

It sounds like you want to have a mobile server, which makes sense too for some use cases. I just switched from 2018 Intel to M1 Pro Max and the difference is absurd. They were giving them away at MicroCenter refurb so I got one with overkill specs. Sometimes you can throw hardware at your problem and in this case it worked. It is faster, quieter, cooler, longer battery life, etc. I use BetterTouchTool to address some of the UI issues you noted and forget I have it until I use someone else’s Mac.

I initially set up the new machine via Thunderbolt and copied the apps, which was a mistake. That said every homebrew installed app worked. It was not too hard to purge the Intel homebrew and reinstall the Apple silicon version, and battery life got much better after doing so. Apple Silicon is a game changer. Everything I’ve seen about M4 says it’s supposed to be on TSMC N3E. Personally I’d go with whichever generation lets you get the most ram and ssd.

I do wish Apple had dimm slots for “slow” ram just to get the numbers up. IMO the 8GB model isn’t a serious offer and is to be ignored by anyone who tells the difference. That said, If I had only $200 for upgrades on a Mac I’d spend it on ssd. I had a 32/512 MacBook and I wish I’d paid up for 1TB. 16/1TB would’ve been more useful.

There are a ton of benchmark videos on YouTube. I saw one recently for the new MacBook Air comparing the 8/16/24 GB models. They found that 8GB was significantly slower than 16GB for tasks like exporting video, but there was no difference between 16 and 24 gb.

    Page maker on Windows 3.1 (runtime) was so bad, that’s how I ended up with my first Mac.

    X automatically changed 'Twitter' to 'X' in domain names, breaking legit URLs (mashable.com)

    On Monday, it appears X attempted to encourage users to cease referring to it as Twitter and instead adopt the name X. Some users began noticing that posts viewed via X for iOS were changing any references of "Twitter.com" to "X.com" automatically....

    Reddit already existed and was a better option than Digg v3, sort of like how Digg was more useful than Fark for many. I don’t think there is a good replacement for Twitter yet because the people that create the best content are addicted to it.

    This is a big deal for me. I’ve got a MS account for Azure but I use Google suite for email etc. I can’t sign into teams at all with the account that matches my email address because it’s not a 365 account. I end up looking very unprofessional struggling to log into a Teams meeting hosted by a prospective client.

    Just to the extent that I’ll be able to log in to Teams with my account the same way others can log into Zoom. Because I’m usually already logged into my Microsoft account in my browser I generally have problems.

    The smart features help keep the cost down. I’m absolutely that you should never connect a smart TV to the internet. I learned that the hard way when a config change on my router slowed the UI on my Samsung TV to a crawl. Unplugging the Ethernet fixed it. Afterwards I switched to Apple TV and have been overall happy since.

    I think you can use iTunes as a catch all for sales of digital files, including bandcamp. As opposed to a physical disc or a subscription. FWIW I was just looking this up on the RIAA website and you can run reports by year or year over year comparing media options. It’s really interesting to see which year each format peaked. Eg 8track 1978, cassette 1989, CD 2000, digital file 2012. It doesn’t include limewire /napster (non-revenue) so the unit counts are a bit depressed. I wish it included pre-iPod mp3 players and blank CD sales.

    I don’t agree. It depends how the song was ripped and how the original was mastered. I did so much A/B testing at the time and found I couldn’t tell the difference between VBR 256 AAC and the CD. 128k mp3 sounded worse, 320k mp3 is pretty safe, but there were a lot of improvements to LAME over the years so newer files sound better. The biggest difference is the mastering. Generally 1980s reissues of 1970s analog masters sound worst, 1990s is best, 2000s everything got remastered to make it loud and crush dynamic range. The only real innovation since is Dolby Atmos on Apple Music which really brings alive the promise of 1970s quadraphonic.

    I don’t know if it should. Linux is obviously important to the Chinese. The foundation also has employees from Intel, VMWare, Meta, Qualcomm, Microsoft, and all the Japanese electronics manufacturers on the board. If we are so afraid of China maybe we should pull all of our manufacturing back.

    The US Department of Justice and 16 state and district attorneys general accused Apple of operating an illegal monopoly in the smartphone market in a new antitrust lawsuit. The DOJ and states are accusing Apple of driving up prices for consumers and developers at the expense of making users more reliant on its iPhones.

    The proof is the status quo. Video texts from Android users look bad on an iPhone. Apple could choose to fall back to RCS instead of SMS from iMessage. RCS would offer better video quality than SMS, which overall improves the interoperability of all phones. Because RCS is a standard and the natural successor to SMS, refusing to support the standard makes it less likely to succeed, with the intent of defending their dominant market share.

    Looks like there are two separate issues addressed in the articles. 1. You have to approve USB devices that are plugged into your Mac. I believe the fix is to unplug USB devices and plug them back in. 2. Microsoft Defender is crashing CUPS unless you manually give it full disk access. Either give it full disk access or remove Microsoft Defender from your Mac.

    ETA: I just checked and I’m ok 14.4. No problems printing but it did ask me to confirm that I trusted every new USB device that I plug in.

    My guess is it is for some corporate security policy that requires the same endpoint management. I had no idea it existed either before I read the thread on Apple forums.

    It just needs to be better than the Intel CPUs with iGPU that power most laptops. Increased perf per watt is the first goal. Cloud service providers will follow suit, leaving x86 gaming machines as an edge use case. Once PS6 or PS7 runs on ARM then it’s game over.

    I don’t mean Microsoft apps. I know those will work fine. I mean all the effort Microsoft has put into making sure that Windows remains compatible with very old third-party software, including drivers.

    It was about 50/50, but fortunately everything that didn’t work had upgrades to universal or Apple silicon available. I imagine things were rougher for the early adopters. What surprised me the most was being able to run Windows Steam via Whisky with very little drama.

    Me neither, I use it for work and don’t need the distraction but I was curious to see how it performed. It’s impressive how far apps like Wine have come in the last few years.
