There's always Bazzite's vanilla KDE cousin, Aurora: https://getaurora.dev/ It is essentially the Fedora KDE spin with way better hardware support and QoL features.

But Bazzite isn't really a distro in it's own right anyway, it's an unofficial Fedora spin that gets updates pretty much immediately (<24hrs) from upstream. It kind of "solves" a lot of the issues with most gaming distros.

I'd highly recommend both to new users as well, as they are immutable (like the Fedora Atomic Desktops) and make it a lot harder to completely mess up your install while you're still learning.

Do you subscribe to !vexillology at all? It's decently big, but you're right about missing the one from the other side.

I don't think you need to be chronically online in Australia to know about it either, and we don't watch the parade. We do share a language, and more importantly, most popular music with y'all though.

That's all really fair. But I also just assumed he was parroting what the mother had called it, and that she was just blissfully unaware that she'd mixed the memes.

How do you imagine that geoblocking content works if IP addresses don't expose where you live?

And better get off the internet right now if your concern is exposing your ip cause it was never secret to begin with.

qaz could be using any of dozens of different methods to obfuscate their IP from the wider internet to write their comment, Tor or a VPN to name just a couple.

Oh no, an annoying red dot. Microsoft are straight up hoovering up users data into the cloud by automatically enabling syncing. These two things are not even close to the same.

princessnorah , (edited )
@princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Wow. I genuinely can't believe people are upvoting you for this. Like yeah, I super agree it's a dark pattern. Stealing people's data is WAY worse though, uploading potentially sensitive photos or documents to their cloud with no user input. But according to you that's fine because it's less obtrusive and annoying? Yeesh I'm glad I don't have your priorities.

Edit: Like, have you seen most people's home screens? They'll have a dozen other "red dots" and it becomes part of the background. In the same way as you talk about with Windows errors. Here's mine:

Oh noooo, a red dot on the Settings app...with all the other red dots...

princessnorah ,
@princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Yes. I completely agree that there should be. However the other poster's claim that it makes Apple just as bad as Microsoft turning a syncing feature on without user consent is ludicrous imo. That just feels like giving them a free pass on what is, I believe, an as before unseen escalation in the erosion of user privacy by large corporations.

princessnorah ,
@princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Yes but I'd imagine it's a cloud API if it's paid, not a local API. While yes, you could use this to make a HA integration, it would never reach platinum status. The customer seems to he wanting them to open up the API calls the "Brain" makes to the cloud, to intercept them.

There's Tuya Cloudcutter now that can hack a lot of current devices wirelessly. It's a good way to get cheap "open firmware" IoT devices.

princessnorah ,
@princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I'm not sure they have, but there's still so much stock of old firmware out there, there are even companies who straight up haven't pushed an update for their devices yet. Maybe I'm having more luck because I'm Aussie? But even CostCo had a home-brand of bulbs they haven't updated yet.

It's the same these days with the f-slur and cishet folks getting ostracised for using it, at least where I live. I agree, I'll happily call myself one but never the r-slur. It just gives people a free pass.

How about we don't use the word nuke, in the context of military actions, unless actual nuclear weapons were involved? Because Israel is the one country on Earth that has them but hasn't declared as such. And they have repeatedly threatened to use them on Gaza as some sort of act of god.

Bisexual woman here, so I agree with you on the butts, but straight girls and gay men do exist.

Okay feminism time. In my opinion, the reason that dude's look like potatoes in video games is most likely because of the gender disparities in the industry. There just isn't anyone that looks at men from the perspective of attraction.

I'm in Aus and our transfers are usually instant. However if you're transferring a couple hundred bucks or more, and you haven't made a transfer before to a person, it will hold it for a day. I think to give the customer time to call and say the transfer was fraudulent.

it's mostly just internet lingo.

Spend more time around people under 25, while they're around other people who are also under that age. I hear it a lot.

Edit: To be clear, I'm not even under 25. Just spend a lot of time with people who are. Makes you feel old when younger folks 'code-switch' and use different language choices with you...

Netris: An open-source cloud gaming platform (GeForce NOW alternative) that can be self-hosted, integrates your Steam game library.

Okay, so full disclosure, I haven't used Netris at all yet, but I have used Sunshine/Moonlight extensively.

Moonlight is an app that's compatible with the Nvidia Gamestream protocol. You can stream directly from Geforce Experience to Moonlight, but Nvidia have deprecated it. Thankfully, an open source implementation of the Gamestream server exists called Sunshine, that is fully compatible with Moonlight (I don't know how much of this you already know but other people will read it too). However, due to limitations in the design by Nvidia, the Gamestream protocol is a 1:1 connection. You get the display out from your PC and Geforce/Sunshine handles launching the app. So if you want a single card to handle two different gamers at once, you have to split it and create VMs, then install Sunshine individually to each one. These resource partitions are often also static.

Netris on the other hand is based off of GeForce Now. Nvidia based it off of Gamestream, insofar as the connection between client device and server. But in terms of the software Nvidia runs on their servers, it's designed to handle dynamic scaling of hardware to accomodate multiple clients. It handles getting however many 720p or 1080p or 4K streams out of a specific card, and can often split them unevenly when needed. As well it handles syncing of cloud saves and the creation and destruction of VMs. So to me it seems Netris is the full package needed for sticking a 3080 in a server and having 4-5 users all be able to utilise the one card to game concurrently.

This will hopefully grow to become an excellent choice for smaller-time cloud providers to compete with Nvidia. And self-hosting it with a beefy CPU setup and SSD storage so it can handle multiple gamers at once. However, if you just want to stream a single PC for a single gamer (or even two seats using a VM running on your desktop) then Sunshine & Moonlight are going to be the better choice.

princessnorah , (edited )
@princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

In my experiences, Sunshine/Moonlight are a little bit more performant. But what's nicer about them is they are far more configurable, at the disadvantage of being less ready to go out of the box.

Edit: By this I mean you can do things like run bat/bash scripts on connect as well as disconnect. You can also launch straight into games themselves rather than need to connect to big picture mode first.

Not picking up on it at all either. It all looks too close to "on model". It looks like SM64 to me, and created using the game itself or rendered with assets from it. That game has been thoroughly broken wide open these days.

princessnorah ,
@princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Yeah. It was pretty funny to me because downdetector.com (run by the speedtest.net folks) had 4 times the error reports submitted for DDG than Bing. Bing has a bigger market share, so I think it's purely down to DDG users being more technically-minded.

I'm sorry but this is an incredibly western take on religion. And this is coming from someone raised as a Catholic. Hinduism, Buddhism and Sikhism all generally teach a tolerance for other's beliefs, and rarely use tools like indoctrination. They make up about 1.5 Billion practitioners worldwide, so they aren't a rounding error either.

When I was a homeless trans woman (that's white fwiw), I would go to Gurdwara once a week for Langar (communal meal). I was always treated with kindness, dignity and acceptance. The only thing that was asked of me is that I use one of the (provided) scarves to loosely cover my hair. Considering Sikh men wear Turbans though, asking that of me didn't seem at all like it was rooted in deep-seated misogynistic beliefs. No one was attempting to convert me either.

It is against Sikh beliefs to allow anyone to go hungry, or to punish a "crime" committed because of hunger (eg. shoplifting food).

You just cannot compare that to the widespread bloody harm that christianity has wreaked on the world.

Edit: And I guess expecting me to adhere to the expectations of women that attend Gurdwara, was an act of acceptance in and of itself.

princessnorah ,
@princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I don't get it, are you saying that Europeans venerate christianity while Americans do not? Or that Europeans recognise other religion's differences that make them dissimilar from christianity?

Yeah and this puritanical bullshit sends us all tumbling down a slippery slope until it's offensive to teach children anatomy words like penis and vagina. Hmm, and one wonders why practicing christian families have a higher instance of unreported CSA 🤔

With Invidious, it would have to block every single accessible instance for that to work. You can proxy the video through the instance to avoid censorship.

I think it entirely depends on your use case and hardware. I have a rack server, I need the extra power relatively frequently, as well as the 16x 2.5" bays and the 4 NICs. A rack server is a fairly power efficient package to get all those features in. However, it means that I am limited to discrete graphics, as Xeons don't have Intel QSV. There's also no monitor connected, and no 3D rendering happening, so the card is gonna idle at >5W and probably only use 20-30W while transcoding. Compared to a system that's idling at ~250W that's nothing.

Nextcloud appreciation post

After months of waiting, I finally got myself an instance with Libre Cloud. I was expecting basic file storage with a few goodies but boy, this is soooo much more. You really should not install those from the distro repositories. They are far less up-to-date. This is the official documentation for adding the Docker repository to a Debian system, there's one for Ubuntu as well. You can just copy and paste the entire code block from step 1. Afterwards you can just use apt to install it, but you want to use this command to make sure you get everything you need:

sudo apt install docker-ce docker-ce-cli containerd.io docker-buildx-plugin docker-compose-plugin

Installing it this way will mean you need to use the docker compose command, not docker-compose which is deprecated.
