Google's "Manifest V2" Chrome extension phaseout next month is expected to impact the original uBlock Origin extension, which still uses the V2 framework and has 37 million users (www.theregister.com)

The new MV3 architecture reflects Google's avowed desire to make browser extensions more performant, private, and secure. But the internet giant's attempt to do so has been bitterly contested by makers of privacy-protecting and content-blocking extensions, who have argued that the Chocolate Factory's new software architecture...

The ugly truth behind ChatGPT: AI is guzzling resources at planet-eating rates (www.theguardian.com)

Despite its name, the infrastructure used by the “cloud” accounts for more global greenhouse emissions than commercial flights. In 2018, for instance, the 5bn YouTube hits for the viral song Despacito used the same amount of energy it would take to heat 40,000 US homes annually....

Why don't you just hand over all your income to the government just to be sure you won't engage in any unnecessary activity.

pfff... I'm going back to Windows XP Pro x64 Edition.

Can we all agree that whatever version of predictive text we have nowadays is crap, and has been for a long time?

I'm sick of random capitalisations mid sentence. I'm sick of common words being replaced by less common ones or even downright nonsense. I'm sick of it taking three attempts to successfully get the word I want. I swear it's been like this for five years or more. Can we have a better version yet, or at least the old one back?

They can pry MPC-BE from my warm cheeze curl stained hands! I've been using it to play 4K BluRays on an HTPC, and to decode all these new proprietary surround sound codecs so I don't need to buy a new expensive ass AVR.

Generative AI Is Coming To Your Home Appliances (www.forbes.com)

Across all industries, organizations are rapidly embracing generative AI. Among them, makers of home appliances like fridges and ovens. Generative AI in your oven? Why not? Ater all, AI has been creeping into our homes for years (think smart lightbulbs and Alexa) – but thanks to generative AI, these interactions will become...

Such an amazing resource that was, not only did it have the albums available, but several different pressings, source media, and versions of each one. Something no commercial entity can come close to offering at any price.

Most CDs pressed after the mid-90's are audiological garbage not worth paying for.

If the waveform looks like this, I ain't buying it:

Google will start showing AI-powered search results to users who didn't opt in (www.engadget.com)

If you're in the US, you might see a new shaded section at the top of your Google Search results with a summary answering your inquiry, along with links for more information. That section, generated by Google's generative AI technology, used to appear only if you've opted into the Search Generative Experience(SGE) in the Search...

If you've got disposable income and use the latest tech devices as a status symbol, absolutely.

If you're going the projector route, I'd say definitely. New laser projectors and screen tech is waaaaaay beyond what it used to be.

If you're a gamer (or using a TV as a PC monitor) I'd say yes, the tech here has advanced quite a bit, and 4K gaming looks really good if your hardware can support it.

If you've got a home theater setup, and are a movie buff, I'd say maybe, depending on how big of screen you want, how much money you want to spend, and how satisfied you are with your current gear. For me I don't think the latest tech improvements justify the thousands of dollars of new gear I'd have to re-buy just to get 4K/HDR and ATMOS support when most of the movies I watch don't even have good 5.1 tracks and are still on 480i or 1080p based media because they're so old.

If you're a casual viewer of movies, streaming content, and TV shows, absolutely not. Any LED 1080p capable TV that isn't trash tier is fine.

IRS has launched its free tax filing service, Direct File, in 12 states (arstechnica.com)

"Direct File provides a free, secure option for taxpayers with simple tax situations in 12 states to file their taxes directly with the IRS," the Treasury Department said. Somewhere along the line they went from creating goods and services that people could use to improve their lives, to dreaming up some dystopian futuristic bullshit, then using their control over technology, governments, and media to make that dream a reality.

This, I had multiple old machines with these kinds of specs, I put Slackware on them, dropped in an ethernet card (or two), and used them for all sorts of things, iptables firewall/router, email server, network storage, irc server, etc. It breathed new life into seriously outdated hardware.
