70% of the market. Half of those computers can't even run windows 11. Good to see Microsoft taking charge in the fight against the environment by asking tens of millions of people to throw away their perfectly good computers and buy new ones

starman2112 ,
@starman2112@sh.itjust.works avatar

Imagine spending 40 billion dollars on one of the most recognizable brands in history, so deeply embedded in the public consciousness that any other company would throw virgins into a volcano for a chance at that level of recognition, just to replace all of that branding with your own little name that everyone has been telling you sounds stupid for the last 25 years

At least K has something to do with Kleenex. It's more like buying Coca-Cola and changing it to J

Imo there should be options for standard deletion and total deletion. Standard is faster, puts less wear on the drive, and keeps the files potentially recoverable, whole total would make it totally unrecoverable at the expense of taking slightly longer and putting a bit more wear on the drive

starman2112 ,
@starman2112@sh.itjust.works avatar

That still doesn't fully erase the data though. It just tells the computer that that space on the drive is available to be overwritten, but the 1s and 0s are still recoverable

So proton will only give users' information to governments if the government calls the user a terrorist. Good thing governments don't just throw that word around willy-nilly!

@starman2112@sh.itjust.works avatar

Yeah let's encourage citizens to report their neighbors for every legal offense, this kind of thing has always gone well throughout history

Say, I'm pretty sure I saw you invite a couple folks into your home the other day, and I never saw them come out. Oh would you look at that, the SS is here!

Similarities to fascism aside, this is still an awful idea. Have you ever dealt with automated rule enforcement? It's an awful way to enforce rules. But even if every single report had a human follow up on it, there's also massive, unprecedented privacy issues. You may be totally fine with my insurance company knowing where I am 24/7, but I sure as hell am not. I'm super not okay with a government (which we have) gaining free access to that information for anything they want (which they would). Oh hey, we're back to fascism

Omg I can't believe they used AI to write this article 😡

starman2112 ,
@starman2112@sh.itjust.works avatar

Reddit used to be better, but now any time you search for advice on good _____ to buy, the only answers you can find are "use the search function, this question has been answered already"

starman2112 ,
@starman2112@sh.itjust.works avatar

my only ask is that you make this article go viral by sharing it in faux-outrage that the EIC of The Verge has published an article partially generated by AI, because after the buttons I am going to include a bunch of AI-generated copy from Google’s Gemini in order to pad this thing out.

Y'all mfs didn't read the article lmao

Use old.reddit as long as you're able to. Don't even need to log in (at least where I live), you just hit the "I'm 18" button

Did they say it's the most successful project? Because Sony saying that the PS5 is a successful platform because players prefer it over other options doesn't seem biased at all. It's just an objective statement of fact

Saw a video of the other day of some guy that bought a cybertruck, and his review can basically be summarized as "it has a ton of issues, there's rust all over it, it's incredibly dangerous, definitely worth the $100,000"

It's the prettiest show, and Kyoumen No Nami is the best anime intro

Also a great manga that ended just a couple days ago

starman2112 ,
@starman2112@sh.itjust.works avatar

As much as I hate to admit it, everything up to the Pleasant 10,000 Years it was better than everything that came after it. It kind of feels like the story ended with a whimper instead of a bang, but eh. Such is life.

It's starting early! I genuinely can't tell if the audio is AI generated or not. How cool will it be here in 7 months when we have a presidential election? How many people are gonna be swayed by fake audio clips? How many people will assume the real shit that candidates have said is just AI generated? "Grab em by the pussy" and "you ain't black" are so outlandish, if those audio clips came out today, I would assume they must be fake

This feels like when we saw headlines about a new virus in Wuhan back in January

They're kinda the same, in that people joke about them constantly talking about it when they really don't, and if you try to push back against the stereotype, you only feed into it

'Vortex Cannon vs Drone' - Mark Rober shows off tech from a "defense technology company that specializes in advanced autonomous systems". That seems bad

I've enjoyed Mark Rober's videos for a while now. They are fun, touch on accessible topics, and have decent production value. But this recent video isn't sitting right with me...

starman2112 ,
@starman2112@sh.itjust.works avatar

This reads as borderline schizoposting

Keeping your faith completely private is borderline acceptable, but please keep your symbols of faith out of your videos

Someone just being religious is "borderline acceptable?" Please go outside. People are often religious. It doesn't necessarily make them bad people. "Keep your symbols of faith out of your videos?" What a thing to say to a religious person who isn't trying to convert anyone with said videos. Like, I'm not Christian, I'm no fan of their bible, but I'm not about to give SmarterEveryDay a dislike and a block because he puts a bible verse at the end of each video.

starman2112 ,
@starman2112@sh.itjust.works avatar

"Ban all Christians from any form of education system" seems like a fairly accurate summary of "Christian, muslim, I don’t care what religion, these people should stay away from child education programs."

Like, I guess we could give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you don't want them banned, you just want them to voluntarily never educate children in any way, and that's... Still utterly wild

But this isn't selective breeding, unless you twist the definition to the point where it means something wholly different. If I understand right, this is just screening embryos for potential health problems.

starman2112 ,
@starman2112@sh.itjust.works avatar

Closest, but the method used by eugenics is specifically selective breeding, and is specifically about races or breeds even when you twist the definition like you did here.

Roku has patented a way to show ads over anything you plug into your TV (arstechnica.com)

A patent application from the company spotted by Lowpass describes a system for displaying ads over any device connected over HDMI, a list that could include cable boxes, game consoles, DVD or Blu-ray players, PCs, or even other video streaming devices. Roku filed for the patent in August 2023 and it was published in November...

starman2112 ,
@starman2112@sh.itjust.works avatar

I'll be a customer for as long as they sell these fairly high quality displays at a loss. I get a 4k TV, they lose money because they aren't recouping the cost of producing the TV via ads, it's win/lose in the best possible way

I still feel like I should be able to sue AT&T for claiming my hotspot is "unlimited," but after 15 gb it drops to double digit kbps. Seems like that's a pretty hard limit

starman2112 ,
@starman2112@sh.itjust.works avatar

You are using more than a typical cell phone user

But it still costs the ISP effectively nothing to send those 1s and 0s. This is like complaining about someone having a bunch of fans on because they're using more air than the average person.

starman2112 ,
@starman2112@sh.itjust.works avatar

And some douchebag could come in and say "um, actually, it's always going to be limited because the internet speed isn't infinite" as if the 3TB my mobile data is capable of downloading at full speed is at all comparable to the 0.05TB I can get after they rate limit me

Pissing off music snobs is one of those few areas where legality and morality actually align

If I see someone walking down the street with me on their shirt, I'm gonna ask if they're a fan of Rush, and if not, I'm gonna say they should totally listen to Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures

I've seen the former part of that sentiment on here, but I haven't seen anyone use it as justification to go to war

And if the company doesn't do well, he gets to fuck off and retire on more money than ten people can reasonably spend in a lifetime

The default front page subs are the same brainrot they've always been, and the niche early 2000s anime subs are still as great as they've always been

how can something be so courageous and yet so true (slrpnk.net)

Edit: Jesus Christ, people. If you buy a $150 Thinkpad made by slave labor instead of a $1,200 MacBook made by slave labor, you're still supporting a capitalist economy based on slave labor. We all do. We have no choice. The number of smug liberals in the comments saying "well I buy a cheap used laptop" or "well I buy coffee...

We live in capitalism, comrade. The fact that it costs money to make it a closed loop system is the best possible excuse not to
