I'm very sure that is a burger king or a very old/un-renovated mcd interior, not a wendy's. They also don't use that type of box; it's wraps for burgers and their nuggets come in an open box like their fries. I think I see the golden arches on that cup too but it's not clear. E: that monopoly banner is a dead giveaway too, defo mcd.

Like at least get the company right for your memes.

And yes I'm a fatass, what gave it away?

Me with my 'homelab' nas:

system (user-facing) package has an update? It'll auto-update overnight

dockerized service has feature updates? Let watchtower handle it with the weekly schedule

dockerized service with security patch? yeah, let's hit that this afternoon

actual system update? EVERYTHING IS GOING OFFLINE -4 SECONDS AGO FOR THIS

I lean hard male but I have a touch of curiosity so...

Depends on what's being watched, and roles too though. If both of us get all emotional then it's a bust, if it's too good a movie and we get interested then it's a bust. Has to be a middle of the road movie that we don't get invested in so when I reach over to find better entertainment, it's not a suprise. But I also don't want to find a footlong stallion strap-on when I do... so complicated. Way easier to just fuck then watch something after and fall asleep.

Why did I write this.

Related, but am I correct that only 3 companies make platter drives? WD, Toshiba, and Seagate? Been idly looking for new drives (no rush/issue) for my nas and that's what I found.

wreckedcarzz , (edited )
@wreckedcarzz@lemmy.world avatar

All my machines use WD nvme/sata, with a laptop running ADATA nvme. The only ssd I've had fail was at the very very bleeding edge of ssd availability ("sale" of ~$100 for 30GB) with a Kingston drive, unknown flash mfg. Oldest (other than the Kingston) is when I installed (family member's box) a Samsung sata drive (830? 840?) that's been a trooper for the last... 11 years? No issues otherwise.

Oh, the original ssd (unknown brand) that came in that laptop, which I immediately cloned to+replaced with the ADATA, I stuck in my nas last year. It lasted less than 6 months, with no prior writes and the only reads being the clone, until the nas. Also I got warnings less than 6h before total failure. It was working as a cache drive. Replaced with WD Red nvme drives (2 vs the 1) and those are working fine. Pissed me off, that laptop msrp at... $2700? I bought at $1400 + nvme and ram. For them to want such a fucking nutty upcharge and then use a no-name nvme that dies with moderate use (plex system mostly, couple users) is bullshit. Not surprising, it's came out of an Acer Predator, but fuck.

E: oh and that little pos decided to die when I was on vacation at a convention, so scrambling to get to a laptop and tell the nas to stop using the failing/failed drive, worried about the data, was a panic detour that I did not need...

wreckedcarzz ,
@wreckedcarzz@lemmy.world avatar

Bonus: use the machine with the $10 drive at your desk, so when it flashbangs you, it will jolt you awake and get that blood pumping. Like a sudden exercise routine! 13 out of 9 cardiologists recommend it!

Snipe it is hardcore overkill for this need. I started using it a couple weeks ago since I have lots of tech, but it's made for large businesses, or multiple businesses. Technically yeah one can use it, but it's cumbersome and a bit frustrating to get started/figure things out.

I want to add a smart coffee maker? Okay I'll just get the serial and - oh I haven't entered this model before, lets add it. Oh I can't, because I haven't entered anything by Honeywell yet, time to back out and add all the details of the company. Now lets go back and enter that serial again. Now we can add the model details. Let's grab a photo. Oh, the fucking system has a known issue that it limits uploads to 2MB? And adjusting it in docker doesn't work even though it should? Let's stop the container and go into the damn host filesystem to edit the php file that has the solution you will only find on a github discussion from 5 years ago. Now start the container and add an asset and enter the serial and set the model and set the company and upload the picture and why does the warranty length box only take months and I need to mark it as ready for deployment and holy fuck it's taken 45 minutes...

And no, none of this was hyperbole. Once I know these stupid quirks, 5 minutes to grab data and enter, but shit especially the filesize issue, 5 years and no fix? Oh and guess what you'll be searching for online after watchtower pulls an update and you forgot to note that fix in the docker-compose file? Mmmhm, that fix gets overwritten with every update.

wreckedcarzz ,
@wreckedcarzz@lemmy.world avatar

I mean, I'm still using it, slowly filling the db... But yeah the first go (or 5) was super frustrating, and the UI could be more intuitive, almost wizard-like for beginners would make a huge difference. But if you want to note the warnings and proceed, it seems like a feature-rich system. Definitely aimed at the actual IT career individuals (and their businesses).

That is the container I'm using, also.

@wreckedcarzz@lemmy.world avatar

I have briefly looked at homebox, but haven't put it on my server. From the description though, and the couple of pictures, is very likely a better fit.

I do love me some femboys (and twinks) but sure as fuck not enough to become a slave to the country I was born in because of arbitrary lines that deem "you belong to here" because "your parents fucked here" and thus "you should feel an equally-arbitrary sense of pride and drive to become one of many brainwashed individuals who we supply with weapons and ammunition to send to places and do our bidding".

Or more simply, "I'll happily suck cock, just not the government's".

wreckedcarzz ,
@wreckedcarzz@lemmy.world avatar

At least for windows, you can ctrl-z that away and it'll handle your mouse fumble. Explorer also highlights the files after a copy so if that doesn't work (and it was a copy action), just delete them immediately.

I haven't used *nix for daily stuff in years but I'm sure the same abilities are there, surely.

Me over here with a lifetime plex pass: "...uhhh, did you just feel that?"

wreckedcarzz ,
@wreckedcarzz@lemmy.world avatar

A different perspective:

I run a syno box and I have been learning quite a bit; driven recently by docker and ngix, basically. It removes the daunting 'everything in *nix is commands in a terminal' and gives me this nice UI and bumpers so I don't royally fuck myself (at least not without warnings and scary red icons telling me beforehand).

The hardware is meh and the upcharge is yikes but it's kept my data safe while I screw around "in prod"; and when I do actually mess up, the backup system is easy enough to use and recovery saves my skin in just a few minutes (snapshots too, super convenient). That's what I want - a touch of guidance (so those changes at 4am where I skim the docs and get a warning about a dangerous command making me double-check before execution), a simple UI for system things (backups, control panel, user account access...), but the ability to venture beyond their little garden. Training wheels to be fast, loose, a bit reckless - but still safe.

Funny enough, I was looking at unraid for a replacement/transition not even a week ago. But I figured that there wasn't a compelling reason to switch (the website is barren for actual feature information), and figured I'll upgrade to a new syno box in a couple years instead. This unraid news is concerning but at least I get to watch what happens from the outside looking in, see how it goes.

wreckedcarzz ,
@wreckedcarzz@lemmy.world avatar

Unpopular but I've tried hard to switch to JF cold-turkey, twice, and both times it looks and acts like a hobby project. It's so far behind the curve it's rather upsetting, as that seems to be the 'best' we have for foss options.

Settings (all of them, global application or library) have way too many options with way too little explanation to what they do. With categories, either use them or don't, but like 6 categories for everything and you scroll through 25 settings isn't 'categorization' it's just a mess; can we get a nested menu please. No simple dvr solution - I shouldn't be required to pay a separate company a monthly fee for guide info. The UI screams 'my designer is also a developer' like it has a face only a mother can love. For https setup unless you know to just run a reverse proxy (I didn't the first time), the instructions might as well be a rubix cube compared to plex's execution. The metadata it pulls is alright I guess, but by that point I had already thrown in the towel. Oh yeah, hardware acceleration requiring manual setup is just no bueno; at this point it's like I'm taking a half-done Lego set and finishing it because my kid got bored and took a nap, and because I don't value my time enough I see it through to the end.

I want it to get better, genuinely, but damn does it have a way to go.

wreckedcarzz ,
@wreckedcarzz@lemmy.world avatar

I don't use the dvr functions myself, but family does, heavily, so it's an automatic show-stopper at the end of the day until that sees some love.

Docker, yeah. I have had minimal and solvable issues with other containers, and I believe docker is my only option (synology nas); but again I'd point at plex, as there's a container available that has 0 setup for hwa (beyond the container pull), and it "just works" so...

Eh, I mean it "works" but it's this uninspiring blue-on-black with white text that feels like it came straight from 2004. It's so... Toyota Corolla of UI "designs". I guess if the settings were decently laid out and easy to understand I wouldn't have to spend so much time staring at it and maybe it wouldn't bother me but again the setup/config is painful and options are obtuse at times, requiring time and research and tinkering... so here we are :/

Self hosted open source simultaneous multiuser password safe with .deb or .rpm and an end user webui/android app

I'm looking into different self hosted open source multiuser password safes and while there are many options I haven't found one with a .deb or .rpm install - only a whole bunch of docker compose....

wreckedcarzz ,
@wreckedcarzz@lemmy.world avatar

Stupid q but why is the stop/start necessary? I'm running VW (and a dozen other things) thru docker on a synology dsm and it performs backups daily+monthly. Is it actually necessary to stop the container just to copy it?

How to sign up services without phone number?

Hello all, recently wanted to signup for temporary permanent legit emailmid in gmail. It was asking me Phone number in process, i tried to use multiple numbers from regular online resources ( more than 30) but nothing worked. I used to use that RP plan, and for some reason I decided to switch... and then they took literally 4 months to get back with me with my porting information. I had to try information by other users on /r/nocontract to try and port away myself, which worked. Wouldn't you know it, the very next day, "oh no we are soooo sorry for the inconvenience, but I see you have ported away successfully" like yes mf what the actual shit were you doing for 120 days that you couldn't look up two values and email them back?

Tello's cs is actually quite good.

wreckedcarzz ,
@wreckedcarzz@lemmy.world avatar

...its a full cell phone plan?

wreckedcarzz ,
@wreckedcarzz@lemmy.world avatar

It's been a couple years so I don't remember why I wanted out; it might have been concern about renewal, losing the number, or something like that, I just can't remember. But I've been happy with tello, and I remember I had to contact cs once a while back, they got back with me within the day, and I've needed no other help. The site is pretty user-friendly, even for porting in/out. Data allotments recently doubled with no charge, which is nice. The number I was assigned doesn't have any issues with spam, and the price has remained the same (for my plan selection), even when I've hopped around on other MVNOs the last few years. It's a pretty nice place for cell service, assuming your area/tower isn't strained for data bandwidth.

wreckedcarzz ,
@wreckedcarzz@lemmy.world avatar

You can technically get that here in the states, but it's veeeery limited: Redpocket, and a couple of by-the-minute recharge plans afaik. This $6 plan only supplies 300 minutes, and 1gb of data. The typical rate for most people's service is $50-$60 here ('unlimited* data, messages, and minutes'), with my main line costing $85 plus bs fees. $6 as a backup/secondary could be a rounding error.
