I use a 'burner' number with a prepaid provider that I pay $6 a month for, for all my "needs your phone number" bullshit. It's not a true burner since I'm holding it long-term, but it's a secondary number that I don't use unless I get a call or message on that number. Keeps my main/'real' number safe, from both data breaches and the weird manager at the pizza place or whatever.

Tello. $5 for baseline call service and minutes, unlimited text. $1 for some backup data if my primary carrier doesn't have service in an area. Runs on the t-mo network. Deprioritized to qci7 so data might not be reliable in areas where they have over-subscribed their towers, but that's only for data, so it's a footnote.

I'm at the point (...have been for several years) that I want it to be better, but it's way too much fucking work, for a paltry amount of benefit. Why do the work of 100 men for the paycheck of 1? It's very illogical; and I get 'but it can be better' - yeah, it "can", and I "can" find a billion dollars in a sack on the sidewalk, but it's not probable, so why get excited for something that is likely not to happen?

This isn't shooting down what you said - I just feel like a lost cause. I don't want to bother others, I can't even find a reason to bother myself. I'm tied to an anchor and letting others throw me a life preserver feels like giving others false hope that they can help me, which makes me feel even worse.

Some people have awful lives. I just got the short stick this round. It's alright.

I run two (very) small servers for BeamNG, and I try to keep greifers at bay and provide a welcoming experience for everyone, stay active and informed, etc. A few thousand players have connected in the last 14 months, and I've only had to deal with a few people, which is nice, though I'm on sporadically so I have a couple admins and a report system via discord.

When you connect, you get a motd that is just the rules of the server and the special zombie mode instructions, for those that want to play that. It lists in no uncertain terms what bullshit won't fly, where to get help, where players can self-police the server (vote kicks), and even my username at the bottom, as I want to be available for all. We use a mod that controls abilities for players, and different tiers get different color nametags in the UI that everyone sees; a random player is blue, mods are yellow, admins are orange, I (the owner) am red. The server also lists off a 'be nice, and report issue' as well as the discord link in chat every 30 minutes, all in addition to a summarized version being in the server description. I cannot make it any more obvious that we don't like jackasses.

There were 4 players on late last night and so I decided to hop on and see what they are up to. I spawned in and drove over as they were all at one location, and said "hi hi :)" in chat. Someone responded with "fuck you n*****". Son, are you actually fucking braindead? That's a rhetorical question ofc; so after some consideration, they got a 14 day ban.

I'm still too nice, but almost all other servers are unmoderated, uncontrolled wild-west situations, so I don't come down hard unless they don't take the hint the first time, or if they question or disregard my authority - perma banning one such player a few months ago as they tried to sound like a badass keyboard warrior in front of others, was a smackdown I thorally enjoyed. I also say in the rules that appeals aren't guaranteed here, the mod/admin/me gets final say and it stops there.

Makes me question the reading comprehension of some players.

They tried to get on today (yesterday technically now), three times, along with a player who was present when this occurred (that I did not ban, they said nothing). I wonder if they connected the dots as to why they was immediately kicked after connecting every time.

I have seen literally no other servers running motd - the mod to do it is horribly broken, and I took the time to fix it for my servers - so you'd think a box with white-on-black text and an orange button would cause a second or two of pause. Maybe in a couple weeks they will find the time to read.

I should have just did a permaban when looking at it objectively, but I'm trying to balance being inviting and lenient with being safe and welcoming, so I give most players a second chance after X among of time. I like having the ban hammer, but I would rather not use it. A deterrent, really. If the one temp ban scares the four into not being little shits, I've done my task.

As time has gone on, my temp bans have gotten longer - first was, what, 48h? Then a couple for 7d. 14d is the longest (temp) ban I've handed out.

I'm waiting for the FP to hit the NA market. I have run Nexus/Pixel devices exclusively for 12 years, and all kinds of custom roms over the years; 3 years now on GrapheneOS. But the repairability is a strong draw to the FP, and I believe it also allows bootloader unlocking and relocking with a different key, so software-wise it checks that box too. The only downside is hardware, especially the camera. But I'm still quite interested in it.

The graphene camera app is, honestly, hot garbage. At least it was when I switched like 3 years ago. I just use the Google camera with no internet access to it (permission) and bam, great photos, no data sharing.

Yeah, it's just an app, installed from the play store or sideloaded. It detects that it's a pixel and the extra features get enabled like when installed on stock.

You lose the ability to preview your pictures from the camera when you don't have google photos installed, but that's true of stock too - and can be fixed by a stub app that pretends to be google photis, but simply reenables that camera shot preview. Be sure to disable auto updates for "g photos" so it doesn't complain about a mismatched app.

I used to be all-in on G - devices, software, services. I even got to ride in a waymo vehicle during development and testing (under nda), a friend worked at waymo for several years (I helped him get the job!), and I was participating in studies for both hardware and software for G (also nda). Starting with... 2017, I bought a nas and started migrating to it. It's not a quick process and there's a definite learning curve, but I've been largely out of the G ecosystem since... 2019? I still buy my phones via the G store, and pay with the store line of credit. Still upload stuff to YouTube, I am a local guide on Maps too. But contacts, calendar, gmail, drive/photos, domains... I'm free, my data is on my hardware in my possession, or at least under my control (domain, email).

GrapheneOS isn't perfect, but it's close. My Pixel Watch works with it, they got Android Auto working a couple weeks ago. The only broken app I have is PayPal, and it was working previously, so I think it's a pp issue and not graphene - regardless it's a small inconvenience. If you get a day or two and feel ambitious, give it a go. It's more work, absolutely, but it's more control and privacy.

Ooh, that's a showstopper - nfc and other physical card payment alternatives through gpay don't work, as graphene is not recognized as a g partner and is not given the necessary clearance; they are viewed by g as any other custom rom maker, not a manufacturer. Android Auto was seen as impossible for several years, and is now available, but I'm not sure if gpay can be handled the same way. Assume that it is never going to be available, and a pleasant surprise if it changes.

I have not tested other nfs/cardless payment apps, so I won't give you false hope on that front.

If you use the Google camera app: everything works. I have not heard of any camera issues at all, with any apps; that's not to say "literally everything works" in that category of other apps, but I'd be optimistic. I could install others and report back.

It takes me a few hours to switch from one device to another, as I take the time to backup the outgoing, restore to the new, go through all the system settings, setup my watch, install obtainium (foss app using Github etc as the repo for direct from developer updates) and restore+install all apps, open them individually, set all settings for all apps, then do gplay apps, restore, open, check settings...

Which takes quite a while when I'm physically disabled (slow to type in credentials and stuff especially), and run my own server for data and services (example, I need my passwords for X app, I need to install bitwarden first, I need to use my custom domain to connect to the server, I need to login, apply my usual app settings, now I can grab the password...). Switching devices is far and away still the most painful part about leaving stock. But I do it all in one go, because otherwise I'll forget stuff for the next week or so, and because I use my phone for everything - clock, calendar, email, medications management, maps, location sharing, media consumption, IoT control, banking, network admin... I can't have downtime, it'd drive me mad and would cause issues.

But once I have that all set up... It's great. I used to hop between roms a decade+ ago, and that was fun and exciting, but at this point I need it to work, reliably. This fits both checkboxes ☑.

I suffered a hemorrhaging stroke at 21 that robbed me of physical and cognitive abilities, as a summary. On my right side, I lost fine (or any) motor control of my fingers, hand, lower arm, toes, foot, ankle, and lower leg, along with losing ~90% nerve response on that side too. Quarter blind in both eyes, struggling with (verbal) speech, both processing and producing (extracting or counting letters from a word, or taking in 'bulk' info like a name and address without a pause, I struggle with hard). Emotional control, too, which is weird (example, happy songs, or songs that I associate with happy memories, cause me to cry even if I try and fight it). I am alive, but I haven't 'lived' since it happened, losing a ton of abilities to do things important to me. I'm trapped in a body that has tried to kill me, I'm a prisoner of my own existence.

I have people that care about me, and I am grateful and appreciate of that... but bluntly, it's a struggle to want to be here anymore. I've been through therapy and it did help (I was in a bad state before, my fiancé left me and they were the last reason I had to keep going). But it's just so devistating, every day.

RedReader gets a barely-glance in a single sentence. A single dev (and with users providing PRs) has one of the best, and most unknown, apps for over a decade now. Really? QuantumBadger also put up quite a fight in favor of other developers, was openly critical about the changes and the handling of the situation, and was smart enough to record calls to prove that what reddit was saying was 180 from what they were doing. And all this could be gleaned from 15 minutes on their subreddit. Cmon, if you're going to do 'investigative journalism', investigate each equally, fucks sake.

Do note! RR is supposed to get lemmy support, as they are expecting their api access to end at some point, and lots of users migrated here. It hasn't happened yet but try to check either the sub or the Github from time to time (or just get notified by watching the gh releases tbh).

I was using RR (am, it's still on my device) since basically launch, and I was the one who suggested that qb open an avenue for donations. I've been a patreon for the last... 2 years? Basically my first 'I'm never giving this one up, this is a permanent install'. 11 years later, still going.

Yeah, brutal take but the graphene pdf reader is absolute trash. Takes forever to render pages, if it ever does, is the definition of bare-bones, and I can't uninstall it. It's like the camera - yeah it's nice that it's included, now let me rid my system of it and replace it with something actually well fleshed-out and rich with features.

It would appear that blocking app.posthog.com on the host/network resolves this. But I got the parameter to work, too, as per https://www.usememos.com/docs/advanced-settings/metrics use '--metric=false' and bam, no DNS queries!

So uh, I've been a fur for (oh lord have mercy) two decades now. E6 is great, and FA is adding tag management to (theoretically) have a blacklist etc too. But at E6, unless it's piping hot content, I've seen it, saved it. And on FA, I follow checks 470 artists or characters, and while that's still expanding, again I feel like I've seen all of the kinks I'm after, and even diving into other stuff just to see. Hell, I'm still on SL for that personal touch, since my mind can only do so much.

Reddit still has a decent amount of gay stuff (or gay adjacent - /foreskin <3) but the furry porn largely died out with the protests, and is now scattered to the wind. I've got some on Twitter, some on bluesky, some on discord, some just closed up shop.

Oh they have had them since inception, basically. SL was the place to be up until the VR craze if you wanted to "be" furry.

Most stuff new to me (not E6 or FA) comes through Twitter or Telegram. There a ton of furs on the bird, but I don't really know how to use Twitter so I just bumble around and get links to stuff from other sources.
