If you don't mind having to occasionally refresh the page due to search engine timeout, a public Searxng metasearch engine. I use one just to straight up bypass having to go to any specific search engine. Also allows me to see results from both gøøg|e and b*ng without having to go to either.

PayPal Is Planning an Ad Business Using Data on Its Millions of Shoppers (www.wsj.com)

Wall Street Journal (paywalled) The digital payments company plans to build an ad sales business around the reams of data it generates from tracking the purchases as well as the broader spending behaviors of millions of consumers who use its services, which include the more socially-enabled Venmo app....

For a while, I've had problems with a patched yt app. Been going on for probably months at this point, but even with the latest ReVanced patches I still end up with, if lucky, video plays for 10 seconds before infinite loading. Makes me have to use the PipePipe (NewPipe fork) app more than I want, but at least I get ad free videos.

I'd use a privacy respecting frontend, but sometimes I like to comment and I have yet to find one that allows me to login and comment on videos.

Unless it's a setting I missed, same with Voyager.

Edit: I am as dumb as a bag of rocks. Couple comments down the chain and someone pointed out it's a feature on Voyager.

Google Search’s “udm=14” trick lets you kill AI search for good | Ars Technica (arstechnica.com)

Tack "&udm=14" on to the end of a normal search, and you'll be booted into the clean 10 blue links interface. While Google might not let you set this as a default, if you have a way to automatically edit the Google search URL, you can create your own defaults.

AceFuzzLord ,
@AceFuzzLord@lemm.ee avatar

The problem is that they absolutely love to kill things. It's a matter of when, not if, they're gonna kill this within the next maybe year or so. I can't see them keeping this long after all the AI backlash has quelled.

I would definitely try it, but all the phones I've been looking at recently don't have any support whatsoever for any of those types of custom OS's. No Lineage, no anything. All because they're not flagship models and are more budget friendly phones (and have what I'm looking for: headphone jack and SD slot).

AceFuzzLord ,
@AceFuzzLord@lemm.ee avatar

I personally love having extra storage that I can upgrade to whenever I want on a mobile device. Allows me to have things like all my music and text documents on a separate device so I don't have to worry about most of my internal storage being taken up by these files (mostly music). Local music files are also pretty important to me because I don't always like being connected to the Internet just to listen to my favorite songs.

Also, there isn't a single online cloud storage solution that I know of that I trust. I'd set myself up my own, but I trust myself even less for things like that. Last thing I want is either me setting one up and getting my files deleted by random script kiddies finding a way in or for a pre-existing cloud storage provider to suddenly delete my files because they're updating the service so people on lower tiers get less storage.

With headphones, I personally just love the ability to listen at any point without having to worry whether the headphones I'm using need charged. I personally don't love the idea of getting a little dongle to connect to my phone just for plugging in wired headphones because that's just another thing I could easily lose. Similar reason to why I hate short cords in general: easier for me to lose, as has happened plenty of times in the past.

All jokes aside, after hearing that EOL is coming to Win10 this October, I have decided over the summer, before fall quarter is in and I'm back to start my 2nd year of college, that I would definitely be taking everything I need/want off of my desktop and switch to something like mint or MX because of how simple and user friendly they've been to me as someone who's only been using Linux for maybe 2-3 years. Only things I would I need are dedicated time and personal drive to pull that off and a new external drive for storing all my files.

Google's call-scanning AI could dial up censorship by default, privacy experts warn (techcrunch.com)

A feature Google demoed at its I/O confab yesterday, using its generative AI technology to scan voice calls in real time for conversational patterns associated with financial scams, has sent a collective shiver down the spines of privacy and security experts who are warning the feature represents the thin end of the wedge. They...

I can imagine that in the worst case scenario, company xyz pays millions to gøøgle to have its phone call scamming AI look out for anything that could be taken as even the most mild criticism and cut off your call. That, or the AI randomly cuts out the call because it hallucinates you saying bad things.

I don't condone it, but I've done something similar once in a Boy Scouts meeting as a scout. Had sandals on and I don't remember the full meeting, but at one point we were chopping wood with an axe. I did it, but that's not my brightest move. There was also a time where I was getting my metalworking badge and entered the forge one time for a kinda free time work on your project thing with shorts on by mistake. Nobody stopped me in either case. This wasn't pre-2000s, so I'm not sure how I got away with either event considering safety is usually taken much more seriously nowadays.

From what I understand, it's a platform where you can create games and monetize them by doing things like adding subscriptions, item or ability shops, add access fees, etcetera, that require real world money to be exchanged for them. Though, I think it could also be robux, but I wouldn't know because I avoid that service like the plague.

There's a whole entire webpage dedicated to this monetization thing that's out in the open, if you wanna read it.

Last time I tried this, on Android, it was miserable. Here's hoping that version isn't a mess and you can actually play it. Months and months of updates and work has surely made it less of a janky mess, right?

Edit: someone found a version on Google Play, but I was definitely talking about an open source version on GitHub. Wanted to make a distinction in case someone thought for whatever reason I was talking about some shitty nostalgia bait mobile port.

AceFuzzLord ,
@AceFuzzLord@lemm.ee avatar

The way I see it is Android users are Linux users the same way fans of games who have only played the spin-off games are to people who have played the mainline games. They're just a different kind of fan.

AceFuzzLord ,
@AceFuzzLord@lemm.ee avatar

Hahaha, that's funny. Where would you go to find that art so that way I can
totally avoid it? Asking for a friend! Who definitely isn't interested in this or anything!

AceFuzzLord ,
@AceFuzzLord@lemm.ee avatar

I didn't know what I was expecting, but that felt just a little disappointing. Still pretty interesting to look at, though.

AceFuzzLord ,
@AceFuzzLord@lemm.ee avatar

No. If I'm going somewhere to save someone, I don't want my presence to be openly announced to everyone by having my music blaring, especially not some kidnappers. I'd want to be as quiet as possible, whether that's on the way there or while dealing with kidnappers. I'm not smart enough to know what I shouldn't end up saying and who knows if the info I blab about could be used against me in some way, so shutting up would be the best solution.

The biggest thing keeping me from switching away from Gboard are things like the Japanese and Chinese IMEs. I have yet to find an open source keyboard with both of those, while also allowing me to switch to English.

Edit:

Clicked on the article. Clicked on the Trime and Fcxit5 and plugins links. It might be suitable in the future. Hoping this isn't a situation where I finally find a solution and then the devs suddenly disappear without a trace.

Because there's a chance Sintendo will release another port of that one obscure NES game that absolutely nobody is buying their online service for on their next Gen console. If they license any of their games, how can they rape the consumer financially? Can't you think of the hungry employees at this small indie company that is going bankrupt because little 5 year old Timmy downloaded a copy of a game on N64 Sintendo doesn't even have the rights to anymore?

/S

AceFuzzLord ,
@AceFuzzLord@lemm.ee avatar

Well, as someone I watch online pretty much said, this could lead to other countries banning it if they don't sell (as to whether that actually happens, I can't say since I'm nowhere near qualified enough to make that call). I have my own reasons for hoping for a ban outside of wanting most short form content being banned because of attention span draining brain rot, but this is definitely shaping up to be an interesting development.

I don't plan on surviving in the apocalypse if I can help it, so knowing how to ride a bike won't help. I'm hoping, in the event of an apocalypse, I'll be in an area where nukes will be shot so I don't have to attempt to survive.

Well, the next best option would be paying for hosting in a 3rd world country who doesn't give a shit about international copyright laws. Not an easy task, but hosting your own Discord like platform is probably the absolute best you can do if you're running an operation like making an emulator while the copyright bandits cry foul.

AceFuzzLord ,

This is one reason I dislike buying online. Never know when you're gonna be screwed by stuff like this.

I had to buy lab access codes online for a couple classes and with an applied 25% discount code on one item I still ended up paying, tax included, pretty much the same price as before the code was entered (without tax). Online is convenient when I'm buying things like old CDs or old games or something along those lines, but I hate all the sneaky shit a lot of places will try to pull on you.

AceFuzzLord ,
@AceFuzzLord@lemm.ee avatar

Nah. At that point they'll just delete the AI and spend millions on telling people that AI is bad and needs to be banned.

AceFuzzLord ,
@AceFuzzLord@lemm.ee avatar

The problem I see with that is that the large streamers who make the platform will most likely hit enshitification in how they run it at some point. I could easily see them getting either power hungry or greedy and rigging the rules to set things in their favor over everyone else.

I haven't been getting that level of craziness yet, but I just always ignore practically everything that isn't someone I've subbed to and isn't about a cartoon/anime I like, isn't from someone I have already seen before and like but ain't subbed to, and isn't a game/topic I'm interested in.

I've seen some of the people I see on the front page of the Odysee app that I've never interacted with in any other way than scrolling past them appear on the front page of my patched yt app. It's insane, but it won't be a big issue for me, in terms of strictly just using the app, until they replace every suggestion with those nutjobs.

I don't know how I fixed it, but KDE Plasma 5.whatever on MX was acting up. It would let me login but if I couldn't do much else. Wouldn't respond to my clicks or anything. Thankfully I could open Yakuake and install a different desktop environment. Then, one day while I was backing up files to do a reinstall, it started working again. I could use Plasma without issues. I have no clue what fixed it, though.

It also came with a non-issue of now my laptop won't auto turn on every time I open it up, but I'll take that over having to reinstall and set things back up.

I can agree with the last take, if it's specifically live action superhero movies. Doesn't matter whether it's DC or Marvel, I just don't like live action superhero movies. Give me, say, Batman The Animated Series or Teen Titans or Static Shock over any live action adaptation any day.
