Added benefit of most using low power intel CPUs

This Hacker Tool Extracts All the Data Collected by Windows’ New Recall AI (www.wired.com)

When Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella revealed the new Windows AI tool that can answer questions about your web browsing and laptop use, he said one of the “magical” things about it was that the data doesn’t leave your laptop; the Windows Recall system takes screenshots of your activity every five seconds and saves them...

BaroqueInMind ,

Likely because there was too much CPU overhead decrypting and having the LLM query the Recall image database all dynamically

BaroqueInMind ,

The one that lied about recycling traded-in phones that they sent off to be crushed.

Got a source for us on this?

BaroqueInMind ,

Thank you for the article, but after reading the entire thing, all fault lay with the shitty recycling company not correctly following regulations and instead selling off phones, not on Apple since Apple has no way to recycle their devices themselves. I'm not an Apple dick-rider, but what you are saying and what the article is saying are two different things.

Can you please elaborate on where you determined Apple was fucking around so I may use it to spread the word? Because, no offense, but you sound like you are full of bullshit like everyone else in the internet. Please do not take this as a non-sequitur I'm really passionate on giving Apple the middle finger and you're not helping.

Reminder: The DMV uses photos for facial recognition

This is half a decade old news, but I only found this out myself after it accidentally came up in conversation at the DMV. The worker would not have informed me if it hadn't come into conversation. Every DMV photo in the United States is being used for AI facial recognition, and nobody has talked about it for years. This is...

BaroqueInMind ,

Yeah, that dumbass doesn't realize the EU has been using passport photos to allow Interpol to build a database since back in 2010.

BaroqueInMind ,

Fungus are most of the time the reproductive organs popping up through the ground from an enormous hidden underground super organism. So, in affect, if you enjoy eating mushrooms you are actually enjoying the fungus's cock and balls.

BaroqueInMind ,

Every time I try to use my Samsung swipe keyboard to type "good morning" it always auto corrects to "good moribund".

Good to know it's a real world.

BaroqueInMind ,

So this is simply a WEC but in someone else's server.

BaroqueInMind ,

The recall is due to the chips not having enough microplastic content.

BaroqueInMind ,

Please post the original or a link to it, thanks.

BaroqueInMind , (edited )

It actually is a detriment because the app also download and apply quite a few filter lists that can block annoyances like website cookie policies, and way more ad categories that a simple DNS filter cannot address, and other shit like Javascript bitcoin miners

Google unveils Veo, a high-definition AI video generator that may rival Sora (arstechnica.com)

On Tuesday at Google I/O 2024, Google announced Veo, a new AI video-synthesis model that can create HD videos from text, image, or video prompts, similar to OpenAI's Sora. It can generate 1080p videos lasting over a minute and edit videos from written instructions, but it has not yet been released for broad use.

OpenAI is as open as an elderly Catholic nun's legs while she's reading incel posts on 4chan.

Secure portal between Internet and internal services

I thought I was going to use Authentik for this purpose but it just seems to redirect to an otherwise Internet accessible page. I'm looking for a way to remotely access my home network at a site like remote.mywebsite.com. I have Nginx proxy forwarding with SSL working appropriately, so I need an internal service that receives...

By promoting a culture of disarming using children safety as an excuse and allowing the government or police to have a violence monopoly to do whatever they want without consequence of retaliation by the people they oppress.

BaroqueInMind ,

That kind of hypothetical system does not and will never exist.

Afghanistan was once an anarchist dream where remote mountain villages grew crops to sustain their local communities and were protected by tribal families who elected a local warlord, it was a shit life compared to the West

Now is currently getting wrangled under control by an oppressive Islamo-fascist theocracy who occupied the power vacuum that the Soviet invasion back in the 1980s created by destroying the Afghan monarchy and government.

BaroqueInMind ,

I agree with you, but that is what true anarchy looks like in modern times. Some parts of remote Afghanistan currently have villages that all run like that.

BaroqueInMind ,

Yeah, I've had the same issues with BSD distros over the decades, always giving those devs the benefit of the doubt that they would get around to fixing various driver bullshit for older hardware eventually, and they never do.

Meanwhile a bleeding edge distro like my Arch setup runs on a piece of shit Celeron two-threaded dual-core with 3Gb RAM old as fuck Chromebook just fine.

BaroqueInMind ,

You could fit the land mass of East Asia into just 1/3 of the U.S.

OP is dumb.

BaroqueInMind ,

East Asia does not necessarily include China lol dumb typical tankie /s

iPad Pro with M4 chip boasts impressive performance jump compared to just-released M3 MacBook Air (9to5mac.com)

On raw performance might, the M4 really does live up to Apple’s promises, should deliver. Single core is up about 20% compared to all M3 chips and more than 40% compared to M2. The generational computational leap from the previous M2 iPad Pro is at least a 42% jump on single-core and multi-core.

BaroqueInMind ,

Isn't iOS just about heavily modified Unix clone? My jailbroken old iPad has /var/log and misc GNU directories, as well as an Apt package manager to access Cydia repos.

BaroqueInMind ,

This is very silly and funny. Love the goofy three finger hands that a child would draw. That's a great detail to add to enhance the cute

Does anyone know of a FOSS Firewall for Windows

I currently use TinyWall Firewall, it works very well, it's small/portable, no complaints I even donated to the Dev but I would really prefer open source, also it needs to be user friendly like TinyWall so my non-tech family members can/will use it like they do with TinyWall.

BaroqueInMind ,

ZoneAlarm is trash compared to Suricata or Snort.

BaroqueInMind ,

Both do deep packet inspection using netflow protocol and filter using crowd sourced detection rules as well as commercial, process-level filtering on a host operating system to detect network intrusion is unecessarily resource intensive.

https://www.netgate.com/blog/suricata-vs-snort

ZenArmor does the same as both, but also uses python scripts with a fancy graphical interface.

BaroqueInMind ,

Something that was once free and adequate, is now enshittified with "improvements" to entice me to pay.

BaroqueInMind ,

Turkey feather quill and Egyptian papyrus.

BaroqueInMind ,

Two shitty people, one is an alleged pedophile and the other is a stereotype deadbeat father, stir up controversy about each other to gain popularity and sell albums.

BaroqueInMind ,

OLlama is so fucking slow. Even with a 16-core overclocked Intel on 64Gb RAM with an Nvidia 3080 10Gb VRAM, using a 22B parameter model, the token generation for a simple haiku takes 20 minutes.

BaroqueInMind ,

What is the appropriate size for 10Gb VRAM?

BaroqueInMind ,

I think I fucked up my docker setup and will wipe and start over.

BaroqueInMind ,

My setup is Win 11 Pro ➡️ WSL2 / Debian ➡️ Docker Desktop (for windows)

Should I install the nvidia drivers within Debian even though the host OS already has drivers?

BaroqueInMind ,

I did indeed follow that guide already, thank you for the respect; I am an idiot and installed both the nvidia WSL driver on top of the host OS driver _as well as the Cuda driver. So I'll try again with only that guide and see what breaks.

BaroqueInMind ,

It still requires the use of Google/Bing/etc API calls. There's literally no way to truly self host a web indexing search engine without sacrificing your privacy or paying millions of dollars.

BaroqueInMind ,

I have mentioned this software a while back here in lemmy and someone with actual expertise mentioned running YaCy on noncommercial hardware becomes untenable after a certain duration due to poor quality network, incompatible indexing algorithms, massive database, and search query response.

BaroqueInMind ,

How are you your own source? Doesn't make sense.

BaroqueInMind ,

That dude gives "trust me bro, my dad works for Nintendo" vibes.

BaroqueInMind ,

There is s fuck ton on money laundering coming from China nowadays and they invest millions in any tech-bro stupid idea to dump their illegal cash.

BaroqueInMind ,

BSD kernel and is hardware driver policies are still very interesting to use and mess with. I run OPNsense on a device that has recently completely replaced my residential router and it's fun to realize how complex everything is magically working together on a system that looks and feels familiar but is literally completely alien outside of GNU applications and package manager.
