Plus I would guess that few country could also rebuild the whole manufacturing process in a few years?

Bogasse ,
@Bogasse@lemmy.ml avatar

I think it's been a long time since digital companies tried to solve actual problems.

Bogasse ,
@Bogasse@lemmy.ml avatar

I think except for the camera phones have stopped being pragmatic for quite a while.

Bogasse ,
@Bogasse@lemmy.ml avatar

My FP3 hanged around in my pocket unprotected for 4 years and still has no scratch on its screen. I feel like the industry learned how to make basically indestructible glass for a while (except if you casually put diamonds in the same pocket).

Bogasse ,
@Bogasse@lemmy.ml avatar

You mean that having N+1 sensors every other year is redundant. My phone is 4 years old and had already a quite bad camera at that time so I wouldn't know.

Seeing photos from other people it's obvious how good phones have become (even if there might be some overengineering), on the other hand my phone also had a bad CPU / RAM / Battery / Screen for the time and people who have phones with more computing power than my laptop do the exact same things as I do.

Bogasse ,
@Bogasse@lemmy.ml avatar

Oh Wtf, I think it's because of a bad connection at that time

I hope for one good thing to come out from all this AI madness : people might get used to pay for a service on the internet again. If this miraculously happens it could lead to people more cautiously choose services over quality instead of the one with darkest patterns.

One can still dream...

Bogasse ,
@Bogasse@lemmy.ml avatar

I was more thinking that if people were paying they might give more thoughts to what they are diving into. But yeah I agree that's just a wet dream.

Bogasse ,
@Bogasse@lemmy.ml avatar

And they increase roughly at the pace it should be decreasing 😰

Bogasse ,
@Bogasse@lemmy.ml avatar

I'm not sure scams are so subtle. For example fishing emails are often so obviously scam that people think there are designed to filter very gullible people or very unlucky persons who actually waited for a call with the exact same context as the scammer will give.

I hate 2024

Well, when good documentation is available it isn't necessary but good documentation is not always available. And it can still be helpful with niche issues 🤷

Bogasse ,
@Bogasse@lemmy.ml avatar

Same here, most delivery service will not even bother performing the delivery about 30% of the time and just leave it in a relay or post office. Last time the logs showed they ensured I wasn't home in the minute they left the dispatch center 🤡

Bogasse ,
@Bogasse@lemmy.ml avatar

On Firefox I think you have to right click on the address bar while the website is open to register a new search engine?

Bogasse ,
@Bogasse@lemmy.ml avatar

"Import" does appear on the roadmap for this month, we probably can't know what's the scope fr that but you'llhave your answer soon :p

Bogasse ,
@Bogasse@lemmy.ml avatar

My only criteria when switching email was to be able to use my own domain name. Now I almost don't receive anything on my gmail and I can transparently switch provider. I think it was a relevant move, I won't move to self hosting but I could ! :)

Bogasse ,
@Bogasse@lemmy.ml avatar

I've always conjectured that good Makefiles existed but never seen one (or only for tiny projects). The core semantic of Makefiles is clear and straight to the point, I think the issue is in all the magic that was added to that to spare a few lines.

Bogasse ,
@Bogasse@lemmy.ml avatar

And it's not only about user data, it would also expose the website to content spoofing in public wifi, which would for example allow the attacker to inject fishing content in the website.

SSL encrypts the data you're sending but it also ensures that you're communicating only with who you think you are. Without SSL you can't be confident about any of that.

Bogasse ,
@Bogasse@lemmy.ml avatar

That's still my point, for example you could inject your own login system "create an account to keep track of your favorite artists, or some new shiny feature". For there you can get people's personal information, potentially a password they use on other services.

An URL is something the general public will trust, if the content can be messed with you repurpose the website's reputation. I took phishing as an example but even my not-so-creative and non-expert brain can think of other things : asking for donations, propaganda, advertising, censorship, ...

Bogasse ,
@Bogasse@lemmy.ml avatar

While I agree the issue you raise does make sense in some situations, it derivates from the initial concern : if you don't want your domain listed in a DNS record you certainly don't want it to be indexed by a search engine :p

Bogasse ,
@Bogasse@lemmy.ml avatar

The thought that internet becomes shitty enough that you need a GPU to browse it is really frightening me. If we really reach that point that may be to run an AI which filters out AI generated spam which would really depress me 😭

Bogasse ,
@Bogasse@lemmy.ml avatar

Have you given a try to Organic Maps ? It is more friendly than OSMAnd Although, it still lacks a better search bar I think.

Bogasse ,
@Bogasse@lemmy.ml avatar

Most search engines are just bing. Search engines are roughly in the same state of non-diversity as web browsers :/

Bogasse ,
@Bogasse@lemmy.ml avatar

Yeah, the fact that AI progress just relies on "we will make so much money that no lawsuit will consequently alter our growth" is really infuriating. The fact that general audience apparently doesn't care is even more infuriating.

Bogasse ,
@Bogasse@lemmy.ml avatar

And on the other hand it is a very obvious question to expect. If you have something hide how on the world are you not prepared for this question !? 🤡

Bogasse ,
@Bogasse@lemmy.ml avatar

And AI is a buzzword that englobes a variety statistical tools. Articles write AI to evoke generative tools in people minds, but very specialized tools are at work here.

a nation critical to a balance of power keeping democratic ideals alive in the West

I'm sorry but this is something so american to say 🤭 Although I agree, we're not living in the best timeline 👍

Bogasse ,
@Bogasse@lemmy.ml avatar

I don't like how this discussion is going so I'm gonna clarify. I obviously think it is true that america has a very important role in current world "balance", especially as an ally of western europe.

However, I think your original post made several stereotypical shortcuts. In particular, I don't think that "democratic ideals" are something that only lives in western countries. Also, talking from France, I feel as many internal threats to this democracy as external ones and america seems to be in a rather similar spot, if not worse (the whole Trump thing).

The worse thing that could happen here would be to discourage people of being proud of their country, we will need it to have the will to improve things.

Detecting crawlers can be easier said than done 🙁

Bogasse ,

Maybe they want to suck part of the codebase into notion?

I have a friend who works with ex Zenly employees, and that's exactly what Snapchat did with them.

Bogasse ,
@Bogasse@lemmy.ml avatar

But what you are suggesting only works if you only communicate with people who use gpg-aware clients, right? I've done that for years but I was mostly only able to sign my emails because nobody cares.

But of course when using a provider like Proton you can only trust them to keep just encrypted data.

Bogasse ,
@Bogasse@lemmy.ml avatar

But that's not necessary a better thing to do then. It might decrease awareness on the ease of generating fake images for the general public 🙁

Bogasse ,
@Bogasse@lemmy.ml avatar

I subscribed to a pack for "most streaming services in my country" because I earn enough money now and wanted to try being honest. But I will very probably not renew it, I pay 50€/month, but still use Plex almost as often :

  1. The web apps suck, the mobile ones are often worse (laggy, contrast changes while watching, lack of features ...)
  2. Some shows are not available in a decent quality : in France we have Kaamelott, owned by Canal+, they probably made an intern upload the episodes so it's only available at 360p
  3. They try to control what you watch : the "continue watching" section of Netflix has been randomly placed between line 1 and 4 for a while now, seemingly just to push their bulshit recommendation algorithms that will me watch yet another cheap copycat
  4. Some "premium" movies are not part of any subscription (eg. Puss In Boots 2)
  5. Some show may not be available anywhere when shady exclusivity contracts expire (eg. "Au service de la France" was only available through piracy last time a friend tried to watch it)
    ...

Sooooo ... I was ok with the services sucking but I can't be okay with them so obviously not trying to improve.

It's also incredible how I was pirating everything else when I was a teenager (video games, books, audio, ...) and managed to stop almost immediately when I received my first salary.

Zuckerberg seeks to place responsibility onto Apple and Google for underage social media use (www.cnn.com)

Zuckerberg seeks to place responsibility onto Apple and Google for underage social media use::Apple and Google, not social media companies, should be responsible for checking users’ ages to ensure they are not underage, Zuckerberg told lawmakers, suggesting it would be “trivial” for Congress to design legislation...

So we've reached the point where the web doesn't exist anymore in the general opinion, it's just wall gardened apps now ? 🙁 .0

Bogasse ,
@Bogasse@lemmy.ml avatar

Ow, this one seems to particularly suck 🙁

Bogasse ,
@Bogasse@lemmy.ml avatar

I'm not surprised so many would buy it, but it surprised we reached this number before the first reviews. That a brand new line of product and I'm not even sure what people will use it for 😶

I think smart watches had a few iterations before they found how to sell them. Now it's mostly marketed around health, which I don't recall being the case a few years ago?

Bogasse ,
@Bogasse@lemmy.ml avatar

On a more positive note, Facebook and XFormerlyKnowAsTwitter are not essential parts of the internet. You can choose to not use or care about them. It is much harder to not use NTP, and it's great that it is an open and comprehensible standard 👌
