If there’s anything Suzerain taught me over the last few days it’s that sometimes you have to pull an Urdnot Wrex and drag the ignorant forward before their own short sighted self interest gets everyone killed.

Yes I really enjoyed making two video game references lol

What non-FOSS software have you been unable to quit?

For me, Google video search, Google books (Internet Archive is good, but doesn't always have the same stuff), Adobe InDesign (but in the process of learning LaTeX), and Typewise. As for the Google stuff, I liked Whoogle a lot, but almost all their instances seem to have been blocked or shut down. Also, apologies if this is...

I’ve never understood the appeal of Spotify

  1. Tap search
  2. Select artist/album/song
  3. Play anywhere instantly
  4. Low monthly cost, no need to buy songs/albums

I also like having physical copies/my own files organized for my home server. But to not even understand why people use Spotify...?

BolexForSoup ,
@BolexForSoup@kbin.social avatar

Youtube doesn't let you listen to videos if you navigate away from the app or lock your screen, making it functionally useless as a mobile music player. You have to pay for YT music to be able to do that.

And I agree with you about not using spotify, but again, there are certainly advantages to it. The pros just don't outweigh the cons/match our values.

BolexForSoup ,
@BolexForSoup@kbin.social avatar

Sure but they are not as effortless/not as feature rich as spotify and can be tricky to run on iOS. Google et al are also actively trying to break those projects these days. I say this as a daily freetube user.

Is there anything unsavory about ProtonMail?

For some reason I have it in the back of my mind that they were at one point accused of being a honeypot for US intelligence because of their association with MIT. Probably complete BS, but maybe not. Are they as open source as they claim to be? Looks like they're on github. F-Droid seems to think they have some Google libraries...

BolexForSoup ,
@BolexForSoup@kbin.social avatar

I like proton mail a lot. Proton drive not bad either but can be finicky when uploading dozens of larger files at once.

I wonder why they aren’t allowed to just rant a bit

Name a company that gives security updates to 15 year old tablets.

I wish they did, but this is hardly just an Apple problem. The only reason I bring this up is because people very quickly dunk on Apple without thinking about the fact that we need more access to all of our hardware in order to increase the longevity for those who want to.

Frankly I find iPads work longer on average than most other tablets. Purely anecdotal though.

The other elephant in the room is that most people don’t want to use 15 yr old tablets. I know I don’t want to edit video on 15 yr old desktops, even though they were perfectly capable of editing 15 years ago. But not current videos. Just like 15 year old tablets will not be able to readily stream or display a lot of modern content correctly.

BolexForSoup ,
@BolexForSoup@kbin.social avatar

An unacceptable option is not an option. This is like saying somebody has access to multiple Internet providers when one ISP is so slow as to be nearly unusable, but it technically exists and you can technically pay for it. That’s not really what we mean by “choice.”

Your response is so typical and frustrating to be honest. It’s flippant nonsense where you know what we are talking about but you don’t want to agree so you hide behind lazy responses like the one you wrote.

BolexForSoup ,
@BolexForSoup@kbin.social avatar

It’s a frustrated tweet not a hard hitting piece of journalism. Why is everyone here scrutinizing this so much? Do people hate VLC now or something?

BolexForSoup ,
@BolexForSoup@kbin.social avatar

I have joined revolt servers purely based on size just to see if anything was happening, and every single one of them was basically dead, especially anything with a focus. At most I will see one or two people talking. Makes it very hard to hang around on a daily basis.

Are there any servers you know that have decent activity?

Can KBin not like, freak out at any turn when surfing on it? (kbin.social)

I forced myself to go back a little to Reddit recently. Because while I endorse and love the existence of the Fediverse, I can't in good conscience, tolerate the instability of it. Any other time I go somewhere, I'm met with a page that says KBin is working on resolving issues, then I go somewhere else and it's fine....

BolexForSoup ,
@BolexForSoup@kbin.social avatar

Can we not like, do that Reddit thing at every turn where a certain topic/title always makes it to the top and everybody just duplicates it even though the exact same conversation happens every time?

BolexForSoup ,
@BolexForSoup@kbin.social avatar

If you are looking to talk to actual people and hear actual opinions, the simple fact is Reddit is the best major site for it. There is nothing like it, in particular smaller hobby/technical/interest communities. And I say this as somebody who has a comment history full of “fuck Reddit.“ There is a reason Google searches are only useful if you put “Reddit“ at the end now. If you find the appropriate Reddit thread you are generally getting some of the best advice or info out there, especially with technical issues. For some hobbies/interests, the relevant sub is the only major community with any regular activity.

Is there astroturfing? Yes. Are there tons of corporate interests manipulating it? Of course. But compared to Facebook, Twitter, etc. it may as well will be public access to their corporate owned cable.

Obligatory “Fuck Reddit.” And I mean it lol. But the above is still true.

BolexForSoup ,
@BolexForSoup@kbin.social avatar

I know what Reddit was. I was a moderator for a sizable sub for many years lol you’re not going to get any disagreement from me there. None of what you wrote above is incompatible with what I wrote. You need to think of it in relative terms. I am not saying that Reddit is some truly authentic experience, far from it. But if you’re looking for legitimate answers to your hobby/technical/fandom questions, name a site that comes even close that 1) isn’t exponentially worse/more corporate dominated and/or 2) is actually big enough to get responses.

Discord is the next closest thing because of how servers are set up but it’s a terrible repository for information because you need to be invited (no google searching/indexing) and structurally you can’t find anything that’s more than like 5min old.

BolexForSoup ,
@BolexForSoup@kbin.social avatar

That is what was so upsetting about last summer. I had a lot invested in Reddit. Emotionally, mentall, hell just time-wise. After the “landed gentry“ comment, I just couldn’t deal with it anymore. It was so disrespectful and completely missed the mark for why most moderators do what they do. Like I get it, many people dog moderators and think they’re just “power tripping jannies.” But fact of the matter is most moderators are perfectly fine people just volunteering their time to foster a community they care about.

So for the CEO of a company whose entire existence is owed to the labor of unpaid users that they never talk to or interact with in any meaningful way outside of a handful of mod teams to come out and call us “entitled” and other adjectives because we are protesting a terrible decision and advocating for people with disabilities…well, many of us left lol

BolexForSoup ,
@BolexForSoup@kbin.social avatar

You had a point until the response became twice as long and disproportionate to the original comment. He didn’t even say “forced.”

I agree the term is overly hyperbolic, but let’s maybe dial it back dude

BolexForSoup ,
@BolexForSoup@kbin.social avatar

Well, I think people need to be a little patient with folks who use terms like “dumb” and “moron,” by it behooves you to maybe consider why people are bringing that up now.

It’s kind of like the R word. Mocking people for things they can’t control, especially things with a history of leading to persecution, is not OK. “Moron” unfortunately does have a very troubled history as a term so they aren’t wrong. Same reason I am trying not to use words like “crazy” when describing people’s behavior.

BolexForSoup ,
@BolexForSoup@kbin.social avatar

Later model 3 but definitely lower-tech (has the touchscreen nonsense but no internet or anything) and I plan on running it as long as possible lol

BolexForSoup ,
@BolexForSoup@kbin.social avatar

I’m not entirely sure what you’re saying tbh.

Anyway I don’t use their GPS and I don’t let it sync contacts or other info. I Bluetooth and run music off the phone locally or my Plex server. It’s from 2016 so I’m fairly certain it doesn’t have the same data back and forth you’re seeing in more current cars. I know it doesn’t collect audio, driving patterns, etc. which is what these new systems are all doing with wild TOS’s you have to agree to, as Mozilla showed us a few months ago.

The dumb infotainment center or whatever has been spotty so I’ve actually been using the aux more lately.

Point is whatever data it’s collecting and sending, which I’m not even entirely sure is happening in any meaningful way especially the way I use it, is not really at the same level we are seeing today.

@BolexForSoup@kbin.social avatar

Not that I know of no. For instance, to activate their navigation, you need to buy a $200 SD card. You can't do anything remotely AFAIK with this car. Even "apps" for listening require them to be installed on your phone so it's not doing it on its own, it's using your phone and app and data to make it happen. Without your smartphone it the "infotainment" center is just an info center with FM/AM radio.

I don't think any of that stuff started until the Mazda Connect app or whatever it's called. A decade ago (my car is like 8 years old now) a lot of cars were in the "blackberry" phase where it's not really browsing the internet and everyone was sort of testing new stuff. Now car manufacturers have a lot more sense of how valuable all that data is and they've "figured it out," much to our collective chagrin.

No. The dissemination of knowledge is important. No, don’t post direct links to obviously illegal material. But discussing piracy is critical to the system’s existence.

Besides, Yuzu was an emulator. Emulation is legal. We are totally right to discuss Yuzu. The emulator itself wasn’t what got them in trouble.

@BolexForSoup@kbin.social avatar

It’s getting pulled down basically everywhere so you’re going to have to find some smaller communities or individuals to get your hands on it now. That’s the real annoying part here lol

"Easily startled"? It wasn't a simple C&D dude. They got sued by a vindictive international company worth $50bill USD with a cult following that defends its every action in a hostile, pro-corporate legal environment (the US). The settlement alone shows how absolutely fucked they were.

I’m just tired of watching people advancing the right’s goal of demonizing her because of her politics. Yes private jets are ridiculous. No I wish she wouldn’t use it. Yes I agree she shouldn’t have sent that C&D (though I also understand she probably feels like having her whereabouts constantly published is more of an issue now that the right has all these conspiracies about her, just my guess though).

But ultimately, this is mostly fueled by the right. People are just steering into that skid for some reason. This is about her more than it is her jet usage.

It doesn’t say anything about getting rid of their cell phone for one. The article says quite the opposite actually.

While Gen Zers definitely don’t need a landline — still relying on their cellphones for virtually everything — it’s the aesthetic of “2000s nostalgia” that makes the relic so attractive to them.

Believe me, I am for more regulation directed at Apple. I am just saying I’m not seeing evidence that people are buying iPhones for iMessage in any appreciable number.

BolexForSoup ,
@BolexForSoup@kbin.social avatar

Jfc are textbooks prices even worse than when I was in undergrad? What do things typically cost now? It was awful when I was buying them.

BolexForSoup ,
@BolexForSoup@kbin.social avatar

Yeah some shift the pages a bit so you can’t buy the online portion separately and have it line up with a previous year’s version even though there is almost no difference in content. At least that’s how it was when I went to undergrad, sounds like about the same time you did.

BolexForSoup ,
@BolexForSoup@kbin.social avatar

But why would sorting by color solve that for me?

This feels more like an interesting solo hack together project on GitHub that one can take lessons from than an enterprise solution to any sort of issue or feature request.

The problem with this comic is that (evangelion spoiler)

spoiler

the entire reason the angels are attacking humanity was manufactured by a few humans. Shenji is being forced to clean up his dad’s/NERV’s mess.

This comic is placing responsibility on and shaming Shenji, the stand in for a person who just wants to watch a cat video. That doesn’t really track to me.

I’m not saying folks shouldn’t do anything just because they aren’t directly responsible. But there’s a little bit too much shame in this post for my taste.

BolexForSoup ,
@BolexForSoup@kbin.social avatar

I don't think it's steep at all given what you're getting and you don't need to run it forever. Additionally, all the private competitors in the space are terrible and many are all but technically scams that make the problem worse while also charging similarly.

I just can’t imagine what someone’s bar is for them to consider the NFL “woke.” Sorry you’ve had to deal with that. I know it’s easy to be flippant and just say “well that doesn’t sound like a good friend/person good riddance.” But it’s never that simple.

As long as the early access game in its current form is worth the sticker price than there is no issue.
