Sorry I can't hear you with my Focal Bathys 🤓

It's Not Safe to Click Links on X (lifehacker.com)

As noted by security researcher Will Dormann, some posts on X purport to lead to a legitimate website, but actually redirect somewhere else. In Dormann's example, an advertisement posted by a verified X user claims to lead to forbes.com. When Dormann clicks the link, however, it takes him to a different link to open a Telegram...

Google Allows Creditors to Brick Your Phone (lemmy.world)

I installed NetGuard about a month ago and blocked all internet to apps, unless they're on a whitelist. No notifications from this particular system app (that can't be disabled) until recently when it started making internet connection requests to google servers. Does anyone know when this became a thing?...

According to people from GrapheneOS these are two different things:

To be clear, https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.apps.devicelock is not what's included in GrapheneOS. There seems to be some confusion about that. This is the app that does what's being described.

What you see in GrapheneOS is https://android.googlesource.com/platform/packages/modules/DeviceLock/+/b1a971a6e29f5b426b13d96d7692e9dd5a7e81e2/DeviceLockController/

Can someone explain what happened in 1984?

    Bronco1676 ,

    AutoTldr does not use "AI".

All these sentences can be found in the original article, it is just using a statistical approach which sentences to keep.

196 is a square number, the square of 14. As the square of a Catalan number, it counts the number of walks of length 8 in the positive quadrant of the integer grid that start and end at the origin, moving diagonally at each step. It is part of a sequence of square numbers beginning 0, 1, 4, 25, 196, ... in which each number is the smallest square that differs from the previous number by a triangular number.

2G, 3G, 4G, 5G mobile data made some sense as it represents generational leaps in the technology itself but then Xfinity wants to advertise "10g" internet...

Comcast says it represents a 10 Gigabit cable internet network they are building (it doesn’t exist) so they are basically changing the meaning of the g from generation to gig to act like 10g is 5 generations better (or twice as fast)…or that they have a 10 gigabit network. Neither is accurate. It’s still just cable...

    Wtf on their homepage:

    How about my privacy?

The only problem with self-hosting is that big coorps like google or microsoft will put you on their spam list, so your e-mails will land in the spam folder when you send emails to gmail or outlook addresses. Other than that it's not a huge hassle as stuff like https://mailcow.email/ or mailu or mail-in-a-box exist.

    Bronco1676 ,
    Bronco1676 ,

Without dkim dmarc spf and all that stuff it won't even reach the spam folder, but get either silently dropped or rejected where mailer daemon will send you a nice message.

    Bronco1676 ,

This image just unlocked a deep childhood memory or something like that, can't tell because my brain can't load it.

    Bronco1676 ,

I just pay the qobuz subscription and use this inofficial script which can download the high res flac files from qobuz. (You can also buy music on qobuz and you get the flac file without drm or so as a download, compared to other services which don't give you the file itself)

And then I use jellyfin to host my music library.
Jellyfin has many music player apps which you can use.

    https://github.com/vitiko98/qobuz-dl

    https://jellyfin.org/

    https://jellyfin.org/downloads/clients/all

But most of the time I'm just streaming through qobuz directly.

    https://wiki.xmpp.org/web/XMPP_E2E_Security

XMPP has omemo and pgp as e2ee.

I've hosted https://prosody.im/ before I went to matrix.

You will need to enable some of the extensions, if you want to have group chats, chat history and so on. But after initial configuration prosody will just work (tm) and is absolutely lightweight.

The only reason I stopped using XMPP was, that no one uses it, which is sad, but I can't do much about it.

Also one important bit is, that most clients are not e2ee by default and you need to enable that you only want to send encrypted messages and not plain text.

ARE YOU SURE YOUR DISPLAY AND THE VOICE IN YOUR HEAD IS NOT LOUDER WHEN READING THIS?

    Bronco1676 ,

    That's not how this works

    Bronco1676 ,

Laptops don't have the same amount of cooling as desktop computers, so the same CPU in a laptop won't give you the same performance as in a desktop computer because of thermal throttling.

    Bronco1676 ,

    And a lighter

    Bronco1676 ,

Probably not a valid excuse with M series macbooks :(

    Bronco1676 ,

Yes it still gets warm fairly often for me, but not first degree burn warm

    Bronco1676 ,

For a second, I thought Lemmy had advertisements now.
