HP bricks ProBook laptops with bad BIOS delivered via automatic updates — many users face black screen after Windows pushes new firmware (www.tomshardware.com)

On May 26, a user on HP's support forums reported that a forced, automatic BIOS update had bricked their HP ProBook 455 G7 into an unusable state. Subsequently, other users have joined the thread to sound off about experiencing the same issue....

There is no BIOS anymore. It's all UEFI, which is massively fatter and more complex. Being fat and complex, they have plenty of security vulnerabilities that need to be patched.

Because the alternative is people getting compromised and getting their computer crypto locked, accounts stolen or their bank account drained.

In other words, It's necessary but not sufficient for reforming the two party system.

Cornelius_Wangenheim ,

Anyone who really cared was already using an extension that did these things.

The only thing I can think of is having incredibly tight timing on a challenge/response. With ~10 nanosecond level precision, it's not physically possible for em waves to travel more a few meters before the time is up.

Cornelius_Wangenheim ,

Might as well have a push button instead. Having it work from your pocket without interaction is what makes a fob different and should be a design requirement.

Cornelius_Wangenheim ,

Problem with that is that it really only covers the keys sitting on a nightstand situation. You could still get your car stolen while you're shopping or in a restaurant.

The dash cam footage is linked in the article. Looks to be mostly foggy conditions and their system completely ignoring the warning lights.

Tesla is not remotely close to being the leading company. That would be Google/Waymo.

Hello fellow USian! Would you like to be swimming with me in local warm water port?

Cornelius_Wangenheim ,

Same, but I run a "pro" version that I acquired from work like a decade ago.

Cornelius_Wangenheim ,

I hate to say it, but Walmart's store brand stuff is still reasonably priced. It's not uncommon for it be half the price of the big name brands.

Cornelius_Wangenheim ,

The state government also hates the city and works to actively sabotage it. When they tried to reform their police after they murdered several protestors, the state took over the department. Despite being a small city, it has terrible transportation because the state never allocates any funding for it.

Cornelius_Wangenheim ,

Those never actually surfaced anywhere. General thought is that was probably a nation state that has no desire to sell them.

The worst part is that it worked fine on Windows 7. You could hit start > type the first 3-4 letters > enter and be able to open any program or OS setting in under a second. They somehow fucked it up with 8 and still haven't fixed it over a decade later.

    Cornelius_Wangenheim ,

If you click other versions, there are installers without the adware.

There's a pretty good chance Trump will die of a heart attack or flee to Russia if convicted of a crime with serious prison time.

Mandy is great, but you should be warned that the first half drags quite a bit. The shear insanity of the 2nd half more than makes up for it though.

That's the weird thing about conservatives. For all their complaining about how the government doesn't work, they seem to vastly overestimate how much the government does and its competence.

    Cornelius_Wangenheim ,

This doesn't sound any different than what most host based AV already do. The novel idea is implementing it in on the storage array directly in a way that doesn't hose performance. That means instead of needing 100% coverage of all clients to detect/ prevent ransomware encrypting your network storage, the storage array can detect it and presumably reject the compromised client.

Not shown: Jupiter occasionally tearing one apart and strewing its innards all around or abducting random passerbys and eating them.

    Another successful OpenBSD setup

I've been buying these little boxes from AliExpress for years to use as firewalls and routers. My oldest one is almost 9 years old now! OpenBSD installs just fine. Just a BIOS tweak to always boot up after power is restored.

    Cornelius_Wangenheim ,

Yeah, as long as it it's one with 2+ network ports. I use a little 4 port with pfsense loaded on it for my home network.

Before SHAKEN/STIR was implemented, they probably would have gotten away with it. Hell, they probably did get away with it.

    Cornelius_Wangenheim ,

Or just have everyone's phone number on file and pick up the phone and call them first.

    Cornelius_Wangenheim ,

Pretty sure Russia isn't fighting ISIS. The US is because it doesn't want a major oil producing country to be destabilized again.

    Cornelius_Wangenheim ,

Sure, but the 757 is a 40 year old design that has been out of production for 20 years.

    Cornelius_Wangenheim ,

Or maybe it's because the truth matters and spreading disinformation is bad.

    Cornelius_Wangenheim ,

Implicit multiplication takes priority over explicit multiplication or division. 2(2+2) is not the same thing as 2*(2+2).
