Ive paid for private email hosting for years now, and run a bunch of services on a pi now. Google is almost completely out of my life, and my fb has been deactivated for years. I'm not kicking any corporate walls down, but it feels good to be the change I want to see. 🤷‍♂️

I get called a tankie pretty frequently for anything vauguely left of biden on Lemmy. Ive never heard the term IRL, but I HAVE been called a communist IRL two or three times for saying a 40 hour work week should cover a basic level of housing.

Nope, but I do point out that most socialist countries fail due to direct US intervention, which is true but inconvenient to their narrative that socialism is a failure.

Are you familiar with the American concept of the "Bible Belt?" It's essentially just the American Southeast, Texas out to the East Coast, up to mid-Virginia or so. (The confederate states, basically.) This section of the country continues to be hyper religious and hyper conservative. What I'm getting at is that in this neck of the woods, socialist and communist are used almost exclusively as slurs lol, for anybody who doesn't have an almost comical conservative stance.

I'm not in the know so Im not sure if progress has been made in this regard, but traditionally they also have HOURS on HOURS of unpaid time, IIRC only paid for flight time basically.

Decades and billions of dollars to convince Americans that density is for poor people (even though its the dense places where property values skyrocket) and cars are the only acceptable transit because you don't want to share space with a poor, do you?

That's really the kicker for me with those people. The louder they shriek about being moderated for outright dickish behavior, the faster they'd ban you on their own turf for politely sharing a source that counters their narrative.

I've agreed with you basically since the beginning of my lemmy experience about .world. I think that's just where most Reddit refugees landed (including myself initially) so that's why they have such a high concentration of people wanting this Reddit-adjacent neolib singular authority and want so strongly to defederate from anything remotely left of Biden -

On the various posts in this current flood of "Communists should leave the communist instance for my own comfort" nonsense, even the anti-.ml crowd can't provide good examples of how anyone who looks at them funny gets banned. Nobody has modlog receipts and almost every example THEY provide of communists oppressing them or whatever is THEM saying dumb nothings like "I can't hear you over Tienanmen Square" or cussing up a storm while the .ml person is like "Here's a book about XYZ"

I'm sure people have been perhaps hastily moderated on .ml, but probably not any more than any other instance, and if so they aren't the ones rallying to de-ML .ml.

I don't have a car and go for a walk most days, where I live drivers treat pedestrians and (bikers/scooters/other alternatives) as enemies/targets/antagonists/etc.

With zero oncoming traffic or an empty second lane, where I live people swerve toward you instead of around when passing you. At a particular intersection I only cross on the ped signal cause its by the interstate, I get cussed out a few times a month just for not being in a car - Its fucking nuts.

I really like Under the Dome to the point of not minding the TV adaptations.

If you like the Stand, you'll probably like most King (although thats probably one of his best.) The biggest criticism is that he's long winded - which can definitely be true, but I think most of his fans appreciate that. (I'm reading one of his covid books, Fairy Tale. Its been good but I'm over 1/4 through and "the thing" is only just now maybe beginning to happen lmao.
