Microsoft has gone too far: including a Game Pass ad in the Settings app ushers in a whole new age of ridiculous over-advertising (www.techradar.com)

Windows 11 is getting out of hand with its push for advertisments, frankly - remember the recent full-screen pop-up to persuade users to install Edge or other Microsoft services? Then another advertisment was placed in the Start menu, and now Microsoft has finally worn my temper thin - with a new Game Pass ad coming to the...

Fedizen ,

Wrong, this is the elon musk complaint forum. Always has been

Fedizen ,

The advertising ouroboros continues to devour itself

Fedizen ,

whispering more trains

Fedizen ,

yes

Fedizen ,

Do you have an example of this?

Fedizen ,

it sounds like these wheels need to be much larger to offset the lower grip. Wonder how that affects the environment.

Fedizen ,

the staples will tear up roads and tires

Fedizen ,

well did anyone tell him why veins are blue?

Fedizen ,

They're here doing everyone a service. Why are there resources to prosecute this but not like elon musk's insider trading?

Fedizen ,

kind of like we're allowed to decide whether to do heroin or not...

Fedizen ,

The G20 doesn't meet on twitter. If you want to talk to like second rate journalists or nazis you go to twitter.

Fedizen ,

release your training materials or GTFO

100% the scenario will be this: Adobe will hire a company to provide "licensed training material" to their AI tools then it will be laundered with a contract that says "uphold our code of conduct or something" and then when it comes out it won't even violate the contract it will just be a shocked pikachu face and a stern sounding PR rebuke.

Fedizen ,

Not sure whether "let them fight" or "spidermen pointing" meme is more appropriate

Fedizen ,

loves oil companies = loves gay frogs.

Also wasn't the whole thing proven to be untrue? I recall reading a couple years ago about a study found unpolluted areas had similar rates of sex change to polluted areas. Apparently frogs just change sex

Fedizen ,

he gets downloads from god to protect our holy christian nation from demon globalist communist satan worshippers. Surely he wouldn't lie to us

Fedizen ,

nobody is going to arrest you for using the word, and many people will celebrate you using it. The problem is those people are mostly assholes. The word you should be thinking about is "audience".

Fedizen ,

AI tools have turned them all into MIT licenses

Fedizen ,

they'd have to sue you in court to get the second rocket.

Fedizen ,

Again like the tiktok ban:
Rather than passing real privacy laws we're passing racism laws and pretending this helps privacy and security.

Fedizen ,

yup

Fedizen ,

imo its more like Mr Wolfe joins "Leopards and associates" for a slice of the sheep dividends

Microsoft in damage-control mode, says it will prioritize security over AI (arstechnica.com)

Microsoft is pivoting its company culture to make security a top priority, President Brad Smith testified to Congress on Thursday, promising that security will be "more important even than the company’s work on artificial intelligence."...

Fedizen ,

Rather than driving the industry forward with leadership and vision Microsoft is being driven by AI and Advertising fads that are self destructing facebook and google.

Its clear its too late for Microsoft to do anything but lose trust at this point. If the outlook hacks and US government didnt cause them to rethink these terrible anti-privacy ideas then a bit of AI backlash won't either. As soon as people look away they'll start stuffing the OS with snoopware again.

Fedizen ,

forcing hackers to do free tech support to scam you.

Fedizen ,

why though? Were they not getting enough done?
And if its only like a dozen, does it justify the productiviry loss of hiring keyboard police?

Fedizen ,

Is that really true though? If I crank my volume for notifications and then read a book while waiting for my next call how is that less engaged than like reading an ebook on the same computer?

Fedizen ,

there was a time when conspiracy loons would fearmonger about "digital currency" and "cashless society" and yet here we are...

Fedizen ,

he couldn't even hide an affair.

Fedizen ,

he's propped up by like 7 billionaires with media companies and a lot of editing.

Computer, translate

Unusual relationships with women

from WSJ into english

Computer: beep boop boop beep

Computer: "Sexual Harassment"

Fedizen ,

why would boeing need help damaging its reputation? It seems to be doing a great job of that on its own.

Fedizen ,

I think its more if you look at what they did and the problems they're having all came after a merger with McDonnel Douglas and seem to be a typical case of corporate "fire people for reporting bad numbers" aka "kill the messenger" along with lots of outsourcing. Which results in numbers go up but at the cost of QA/QC.

This is all standard reaganomics and like nearly every other company that went down this road while selling real physical products they're now reaping the fruits they've sown for over 20 years.

Fedizen ,

I'm in the "hatchback car or tiny truck" market for my next car.

Fedizen , (edited )

the 2008 ranger is such a nice truck. Maverick is just a minivan with an open trunk. Might as well just get a real minivan.

Fedizen ,

chatgpt won't save anything? Doubtful.

Fedizen ,

The hard fact is OpenAI is already exposing itself to lawsuits by training on copyrighted material.

So the proof here should be "what makes them trustworthy this time?"

Fedizen ,

Witch hunts were sanctioned by the state in many cases. Getting shamed for having shitty opinions is like the barest minimum accountability.

Fedizen ,

smartphones are a distraction in schools. The teachers shouldn't have them either, tbh

Fedizen ,

I think flip/dumb phones are still allowed with most smartphone bans, are you suggesting this one is different?

I think this is less about isolating kids than it is separating them from distracting and addictive apps.

Also it creates a class distinction in schools - some kids don't have them causing them to be socially isolated

Personally I think the schools should be handing out locked down wifi phones to students without smart phones. But I don't think any part of this is about isolating students.

Fedizen ,

My guess is the thermodynamics of a hot engine makes the rubber and plastic parts fail more quickly than they would otherwise.

Fedizen ,

The engine compartment is what I was addressing. There's a number of gaskets where failure can destroy an engine etc vastly reducing the life span of the car. Like while it does matter if the tail lights go out you can often reroute a cable for something like that with little difficulty. You cannot reroute the critical degrading components in a combustion engine as easily.

Electric cars are estimated to have 2/3 the maintenance costs of ICE vehicles. Their lifespan is likely only limited by the frame whereas ICE is limited by the frame and the engine. Major fail points of older cars include timing belts and head gaskets.

Fedizen ,

Your computer? You mean Microsoft's bitch box?

Face it, they can do whatever they want with your computer and you're powerless to stop them. They've also been looking through your photos and adding them to their AI model.

Robot cars can be crashed with tinfoil and painted cardboard (www.theregister.com)

A team of researchers from prominent universities – including SUNY Buffalo, Iowa State, UNC Charlotte, and Purdue – were able to turn an autonomous vehicle (AV) operated on the open sourced Apollo driving platform from Chinese web giant Baidu into a deadly weapon by tricking its multi-sensor fusion system, and suggest the...

Fedizen ,

I think human responses vary too much: could you follow a strategy that makes 50% of human drivers crash reliably? probably. Could you follow a strategy to make 100% of autonomous vehicles crash reliably? Almost certainly.
