Well, one time my kid said some misogynistic shit (it's been a decade, I can't remember the details) and I spent 10 or 15 minutes chewing him out in front of his siblings about how that's inappropriate and wrong, with examples of the errors and results. When we were talking one time after he'd reached adulthood, he told me this turned him away from the path of radical anti-feminism.

No guarantees this will work in most circumstances, but it did this one time.

GreyEyedGhost ,

Haha you don't need a box of microplastics! It's in all the other ones!

GreyEyedGhost ,

Science works on the verifiable. It doesn't work on things we don't have to tools to measure, or things which choose not to be measured.

GreyEyedGhost ,

Your biases are showing. There are non-fictional things that science can't solve. What makes a person good? What is the purpose of this universe and our lives within it? This isn't even touching on the testing of an unwilling subject. How much can you bench press? If you refuse to take the test, I can only guess.

There is a place in the world for philosophy, just as there is for science. Using the wrong tool for the job leads to poor results.

GreyEyedGhost ,

You keep on harping on those things that can't be verified, while studiously ignoring those which are unknown. The only reasons I can think of are you are avoiding the topic or you are being a troll. There could be other reasons, which could be entirely valid, but they are unknown to me. That doesn't negate the possibility of their existence, of course, because reality isn't dependent on my knowledge, or belief.

GreyEyedGhost ,

I'd say the changes from voting for Trump are pretty big.

GreyEyedGhost ,

Cool, I'll give you a pass on the genocide, but you will still be as responsible as anyone who voted for Trump for all the other terrible things he said he will do that you are doing nothing to prevent.

GreyEyedGhost ,

So, is that a right away thing, or does that mean 2 or 3 weeks from now?

j/k

GreyEyedGhost ,

You need to find a better way to say the invisible generation.

GreyEyedGhost ,

Not even just waiting to charge. Picking someone up, but your schedule gets you there 15 minutes before they're available? Why not put that computer to use?

GreyEyedGhost ,

Well, there was a sequel. Looks like it was direct to DVD so I'm sure it was impressive.

GreyEyedGhost ,

Their average height is much lower than people from South Korea. The most likely cause is malnutrition. When malnutrition affects even the military, your civilians aren't doing well.

If you're looking for sources, there are plenty of links should you search for "north korean vs south korean height". The difference is pretty dramatic for 75 years of isolation.

GreyEyedGhost ,

If this was true, the Chinese EVs could be allowed in and no one would buy them. I personally want a smaller car that can comfortably seat 5 and has additional safety and comfort features (backup cameras, lane assist, heat pump climate control, etc.). This could easily be done with a sedan, hatchback, or station wagon. The only cars that have these features that I know of are SUVs.

GreyEyedGhost ,

Where I live, the base model of the Chevy Bolt is $41k, and doesn't have heat pump climate control (or isn't talking about it). It also doesn't look like it would seat 5 comfortably. Now, even without the spectre of financially supporting Elon's antics, I don't see a lot of reason to pay another $10k for a reasonably similar car. People are weird. 🤷‍♂️

GreyEyedGhost ,

Most extremists are worrisome. Some cause more trouble for those around them than others, though. An extreme pacifist might get more abuse than someone who isn't, for instance, and that isn't great, but it's a more personal problem than trying to force your views and behaviors on others, which many other types of extremists try to do.

GreyEyedGhost ,

Rough 2x4s were 2" x 4". Then we started finishing them for better consistency, taking about 0.5" from each dimension. Later we started using saws with narrower kerfs to have less loss due to saw blade width, better cutting and planing systems so the rough size could be smaller and still have the same finished size, then they lowered finished size some more.

GreyEyedGhost ,

Most places that we're going to talk about have an electrical code as part of the building code. Is electrical wiring structural?

GreyEyedGhost ,

No.

GreyEyedGhost ,

I thought we were discussing what qualifies as structural. I guess we're just talking about whatever you feel like talking about.

GreyEyedGhost ,

Yeah, there's friction, just like there is friction from walking on marble steps, such as those in the Tower of Pisa. But since they are mostly moving with the object on top of them, wear is reduced. In the end, the little wheels will be working in concert to move whatever object is on them in a given direction, but they are round and so will have a bit of drift in short order, which is managed by putting the wheels at angles so only a portion of one side is touching the object. They are likely made of a moderate friction substance with high durability and are probably replaceable, just like the tires on your car.

GreyEyedGhost ,

I was going to say they didn't used to require that, but that's about 20 years ago, now...

GreyEyedGhost ,

This is part of what helped the I love you virus to spread. Not too many idiots would open a file titled ILoveYou.txt.vbs, but even some smarter people will turn their brains off if they get a file titled ILoveYou.txt, possibly even me, except the first thing I do with a new computer is unhide file extensions.

GreyEyedGhost ,

Or my mom.

Me: Don't just click OK without reading the message first.

Mom: Don't click OK. Got it.

GreyEyedGhost ,

Due to changes in my life and career, the only reason I'm stuck on Windows is gaming. I'm not sure which will happen first, buying a Steam Deck or converting my computer to Linux for gaming, but at least one of those will happen before I upgrade to 11.

GreyEyedGhost ,

Yeah, I've tried a few times before and got stumped with various configuration issues. I actually have a saved post where gaming-specific distros are discussed in the hoped of getting past those issues. Now the big question is time or money. Depending which I have enough of first will determine which one happens first.

GreyEyedGhost ,

Yeah, it's really a question of time or money for me. Whichever I have enough of first will decide which option I go with first. I don't expect I'll be buying Windows again.

GreyEyedGhost ,

So I went to my search engine of choice, typed in solid state battery, set the time range to 1 month, went to the news tab, and this is the first link. 2 days old.

Just because no one went out of their way to remind you that researchers are continuing their research doesn't mean they stopped doing it. And when the bar is this low to satisfy your curiosity, it really is on you. It would have taken less time to get the highlights than it would to post your comment.

GreyEyedGhost ,

Chase it down? It says 720 Wh/kg in the thumbnail image.

GreyEyedGhost ,

We've gone from the most reliable battery being an alkaline through 3 different rechargeable technologies as well. Too bad that research never pans out...

GreyEyedGhost ,

That was sarcasm.

GreyEyedGhost ,

Sorry, I forgot that some people say quaint little phrases like "never heard about them again" to mean "still haven't seen a product released to market." I also don't live in a world where companies start multi-billion dollar partnerships with no belief that the corporations will get a return on that investment.

GreyEyedGhost ,

Me, too, man. Saying the same thing so many times.

GreyEyedGhost ,

Yeah, I'm really sick of the hype train, so that was the only info I looked for. Honestly, I was a little surprised it was that easy to find, and that is still no guarantee it's accurate.

GreyEyedGhost ,

Then I'll go to the basics. This which is asserted without evidence can be dismissed without evidence. You made your assertion, I provided evidence. You dismissed it with "Well, everybody knows." And yet, new discoveries are made all the time, research continues apace, and technology advances. Believe what you will. Your faith, or mine, makes no difference.

Edit: I'm so sorry, I forgot to read a little further for you in my search the first time. Nissan is building a factory and plans on having their first batteries produced in 2025. That's just one article I saw about it, there were others. My apologies if you find this triggering, as well.

GreyEyedGhost ,

This is always the problem with laisse faire capitalism. People have shown time and again, they will do whatever they can to increase profits. If we don't have regulations to stop them, and strictly enforce them, corners will be cut and profits will increase until people start dying in large numbers.

GreyEyedGhost ,

Added to my Amazon wishlist. I can't believe thise has been around for 12 years and I only heard of it now.

GreyEyedGhost ,

I was reading this and realized my two monitors are from over 15 years ago...

GreyEyedGhost ,

So glad no one else is making a vehicle like that. Oh, you mean different techniques, not ugly as fuck and designed by a preteen who loves minecraft?

GreyEyedGhost ,

I didn't take it that way. From what I've heard, it's a very challenging process, and I'm not sure it's worth it for this use case. It also sucks that it's so damned ugly. And there's all the good will he burned, ki d of sad.

The race to decarbonise the world’s economy risks repeating the mistakes of the colonial era by building industries on forced and child labour, rights advocate warns (www.smh.com.au)

Almost 90 per cent of the global supply for polysilicon, a common raw material in electronic devices and solar panels, comes from China, and about half of that comes from Xinjiang, the north-western province that is home to the Uyghurs, says Grace Forrest, founder of Walk Free, a charity dedicating to fight forced labour....

GreyEyedGhost ,

I think it would make more sense to replace cost-effective with cheap. It may be cheaper to use a process that makes it likely 80% of the population dies in 35 years, but that's a huge (non-monetary) cost. The overarching issue is our current economic system ignores those costs that take a generation or more to come due.

GreyEyedGhost ,

Or he could as easily block the ones he doesn't like and stay in all. Just depends how picky he is. Granted, the fact we're having this discussion implies he's fairly picky.

GreyEyedGhost ,

This is like comparing requiring students in schools to wash their hands to genocide. The scale is the same but the impact is vastly different, and if you don't want to wash hands (or be defederated) you can just move. Except for changing activitypub instances is even easier than changing schools and both are easier than leaving Palestine.

GreyEyedGhost ,

So many vulnerabilities were found due to time to login that one of the security features was to take longer to respond to a bad login so they couldn't tell what part failed. Here's an article I found about one such vulnerability.

GreyEyedGhost ,

Checking time to login is more likely in the security sector than anywhere else. A number of vulnerabilities based on timing have been identified and removed in the past.

GreyEyedGhost ,

Measles cases were on a steady rise before COVID. They just got a bump from the anti-vax crowd being given further ammunition, coupled with one group deciding public health during a pandemic should be made into a political football. In fact, the year with the highest number of cases in recent times was 2019, the year before COVID was on most people's radar. It also saw a major drop the next year, likely due to all the physical distancing.

GreyEyedGhost ,

If you want to participate in society, follow the social contract. If you don't want to follow the social contract, you don't get to participate as fully in society. This applies as much to actively violating the social contract via theft and violence as it does in negligence. You have no right to risk my kids' health for the sake of your beliefs.
