There are several things to attack on the Tesla autopilot, the name being the least of the misleading marketing, and honestly a bit stupid to focus on.

The dude has claimed for close to a decade now, that (FSD) "is right around the corner!"... "It's coming end of the year" and shit like that. That is significantly more misleading than a product name (autopilot) that is about the same level of misleading as other manufacturers names for similar functionality.

They have not claimed autopilot to be any more than a driver assistance feature, and it has always been marketed separately from the FSD package.

Grippler ,

It will already inform the user that charging above 80-90% is not for daily driving unless necessary, because of increased wear on the battery. They have always done that.

Grippler ,

Then it just gets "driver locked" because of some weird hardware compatibility issue with linux and you have to spend hours debugging and searching for a fix before you can drive.

Grippler ,

Obviously not original, but unfortunately still accurate. I still have driver issues on many laptops running linux, especially with BT, touchpads and WiFi.

Grippler ,

This is how I feel about all bands/artists...they may have a one or two songs that I like and the rest of their discography is not something I want to listen to at all.

Grippler ,

I just can't be bothered listening to tracks I don't like, especially in this day and age where I don't have to swap CDs/tapes to listen to a track from a different artist.

Grippler ,

I guess OP was mostly talking about regular albums which are mostly just collections of disjoint songs

No I'm talking music in general. I don't really care that they have some artistic intention with their album as a whole, if I don't like a track I'm moving on. I don't get why anyone would listen to music they don't enjoy.

I've never lifted a weight and none of my t-shirts fit either...not from raging muscles though.

All the ways streaming services are aggravating their subscribers this week (arstechnica.com)

Below is a look at the most exasperating news from streaming services from this week. The scale of this article demonstrates how fast and frequently disappointing streaming news arises. Coincidentally, as we wrote this article, another price hike was announced....

Grippler ,

They absolutely did. I used to pirate all my media 20 years ago, but then streaming became so convenient and relatively cheap that I just didn't bother with it anymore.

Now, they've pretty much pushed me back out to sea with their ever increasing prices and decreasing content that's worth watching. I'm not paying $15-20 per service, when they insist on fragmenting it to hell so I'd need 3-4 subscriptions to watch the things I want.

Grippler ,

Likely skilled labour in the beginning so they can intervene and drive/manoeuvre if necessary, and as the tech matures just "button pushers" in the truck, then remote with a single person managing several trucks.

Grippler ,

Why the Clickbaity headline, CNBC?

You clicked it and read the article, so it worked as intended. As long as this shit works, they will continue to do it.

Grippler ,

Their bad faith headline is costing them clicks.

Unfortunately it is still a clear net positive for them. Despite some of us actively pushing back against it, most people just click to read.

Grippler ,

Buying a burner sim would bypass this though, shouldn't be too hard.

Grippler ,

That does sound more like a user issue than a software issue though

Grippler ,

Well that's a big ol' "whoosh" on me then 😅

Grippler ,

keep your main phone in a secret/secure pocket.

Terrible idea, it will be found with absolute certainty if you're arrested.

Grippler ,

Yeah that's not even remotely the same type of sensor used in robotics and autonomous cars. Yes lidar is getting cheaper, but for high detail long range detection they're much more expensive than the case of your iphone example. The iPhone "lidar" is less than useless in an automotive context.

Grippler ,

The original roadster is just a lotus Elise with a terrible DIY EV mod thrown in to it.

Grippler ,

Those are called "bars" and not bricks, it even says so in your link. So technically it cannot qualify as the world's most expensive brick since it isn't a brick at all.

Grippler ,

EK has over 230 water blocks, 40 liquid cooling kits, 85 reservoirs, 40 pumps, 73 radiators, and 212 miscellaneous accessories.

Damn, that seems like a ridiculously large product lineup for such a relatively small niche market.

Grippler ,

Can't do that here though

What client are you using? I can browse both upvoted and downvoted comments in Voyager

reading those papers

Woah there Mr. Overachiever, you're making the rest of us look lazy...

Grippler ,

It definitely didn't leave me with the feeling that my manager was happy with me or my work.

Exactly how he wanted it. A worker uncertain of their skill or value is much more likely to do whatever they want, and at a lower salary.

Finally deleted my LinkedIn account!

After putting my account into "hibernation" for the past few weeks, I finally closed it. But I'm still looking for work. Thankfully I can still find positions (SRE and software dev) by just going directly to the company's site and finding a Jobs page.

Good luck to everyone else out there looking for work!

Grippler ,

I've gotten almost all my jobs, and probably a handful of offers, and more messages from recruiters than I can count, through LinkedIn...it's definitely the easiest way to find and get a job IME. I don't think I've gone "job hunting" since I was fresh out of university looking for my first job.

Grippler ,

you "have to" bring it to Tesla for repairs and service

That's some big ass quotation marks, because it's not true at all. I've only had mine fixed by Tesla when it was a warranty issue. The service I've had done (brakes, general checkup and AC) have been done by a local shop without any issues. Had a fender bender that was fixed by a local shop too without any issues.

Grippler ,

Their hourly rate is certainly lower than my local shop.

Grippler ,

If the US decides to ban it then that's a move from the Chinese playbook. Don't be like China.

It has a bit of the same vibe as the "tolerating intolerance" paradox.

Grippler ,

You're right, it's more akin to a ponzi scheme.

Grippler ,

In the case of tesla, you'd still need the API token to the specific car (which requires username and password) to send any commands to it. It doesn't actually take commands directly, from anything, it's all done through teslas servers via the API. Getting access to local network makes no difference, you need the token to do anything with the car. You can't even send commands via BT to the car.

I hate the flash as a superhero... The dude is literally unbeatable, but he just chooses to like, not really bother.

Grippler ,

Yep, sounds about like some motherfuckers around here.

Got a source to back that up?

Grippler ,

Coffee in the US (outside of specialty shops) is always piss poor and IME thin cups of dark-ish water without much actual coffee flavour.

Grippler , (edited )

Light roasts taste different, not necessarily better, and dark roasts aren't necessarily excessively bitter. And the difference in caffeine due to roasting level is minimal, it is much more affected by type of bean and how it's handled before roasting.

It all comes down to what you want from your coffee...if you want floral and fruity with higher acidity, go for the lighter roasts. If you want chocolate, caramel and nuts with lower acidity, go for the darker roasts. I personally dislike the floral profile of many lighter roasts, it gets a bit "soapy" IMO, which is the same issue I have with most tea.

Grippler ,

That's not my experience at all..."Cafeteria coffee", or diner drip-coffee if you will, in the US is always thin watery coffee compared to the same type anywhere else I've been (mostly limited European countries though).

Grippler ,

It's my primary computer these days, so it's definitely a useful tool and not a gimmick for me...I do still own a laptop, but I only use it for the very few things I do that require a KB/M combo. I'd say >95% of everything that requires a computer/digital access I do with my phone.

Grippler ,

I just power all of my cameras with POE

Grippler ,

We had a coworker that got fired a while back, man that was a relief for the entire department. That person was absolutely toxic to work with, or even near.

Grippler ,

I might not be paid a lot, but things like this makes up for it.

Really? Being given stuff you don't have a need or use for is good compensation to you?

Grippler , (edited )

I bought an old Intel NUC with a 2.x GHz i3, 8gb ram and 120gb nvme used for $65, upgraded it to 16gb of ram and 1tb nvme for another $50. I run everyting from that in either VMs or LXCs (HA, jellyfin, NAS, CCTV, pihole) and it draws about 10W

Grippler ,

The article's metric seems to be whether or not they own a driver's license, not a car. So whether or not they can afford to own a car isn't really a part of this article's dataset, although they do touch on why they don't own a car in the article as well.

Grippler ,

The unit of measure in this article is whether or not they have a driver's licence, not a car...I'm pretty sure even gen Zers can afford a driver's license, if they actually wanted it. Not having a driver's licence is very much a choice, to a much higher degree than owner a car (or house)

Grippler ,

I got a licence when I was 18 (legal driving age where I live) despite not owning a car or planning to anytime soon. I could still borrow my parent's car sometimes, which was nice. This article specifically talks about teens in the 16-17 year old range, very much able to borrow a car from parents (if they have one)

Grippler ,

Yeah it costs around 2k Euros where I live, which is enough to also buy a small beater...but this article is US-focused only, and it's significantly cheaper to get a licence in the US, hence my comment.

Grippler ,

You can't make a perfect UI, because people think differently. What is obvious and logical to one person, is obscure and nonsensical to another. It is impossible to make a one-size-fits-all interface to anything, not just software.

Grippler ,

You can use online banks like revolut for virtual debit cards in Europe.
