And according to the promotional video, it will pleasure you with a special dance.

The tesla model S looks like a decade old eurospec Ford Mondeo.

Certainly look more alike than a porsche and a byd.

Hyperreality , (edited )

The ford mondeo (I think it was called the fusion in the US) was 'inspired' by the Aston Martin Rapide. This was at a time when Ford owned Aston Martin. Fisker and Porritt, who worked at tesla when the model S came out, also worked for Ford/Aston Martin.

It's not just me either. For example, here's a ten year old thread on the tesla forum which mentions it:

Urgent need to investigate role of technology, social media companies in killing Gazan civilians (euromedmonitor.org)

The role of major technology companies and international social media platforms in the killing of Palestinian civilians during Israel’s genocidal war against the Gaza Strip, ongoing since 7 October 2023, must be investigated. These companies need to be held accountable if found to be complicit or not to have taken adequate...

when israel releases the 3000+ Palestinian hostages they hold in concentration camps we can reach a ceasefire.

In other words, you would rather that Israel continue bombing Gaza, than that Hamas and Israel sign a ceasefire today.

Almost as if you don't actually care about the innocent men, women and children who are dying, as you find it politically convenient the conflict continues. Especially in the run-up to the US election.

Hyperreality ,

Don't be lazy.

Get a cable tie or some tongs, pull it out, rotate it, done.

Less effort than it took to take this picture and post it on here.

  1. Manhole covers are not heavy as fuck. They're meant to be able to lift out. I've lifted far larger ones than this no problem.
  2. This manhole cover is at most 30x30cm judging by OP's foot, so weights at most a few kilos.
  3. This is a small cover, probably covering a drain, not a hole to the centre of the earth. I have a few around the house. Cable tie, piece of string, lift it out no problem. You lift and slide it aside, it's not going to fall in unless you're a complete moron or drunk. If it does fall in, you pull it out, because it doesn't weigh 100 kg.
  4. If you're worried that this would take your finger off, you're the kind of person who should hire an electrician to change a light bulb.
Hyperreality , (edited )

It’s really strange that it’s square and not round.

It's not even slightly strange. These are incredibly common all across Europe and the world.

It's a small cover, almost certainly to service the nearby drainpipe or perhaps for the water or gas connection to a house.

The chance of it falling in the hole is zero unless you're trying to do it on purpose. Lift and slide, done.

And even if it does fall in, you can simply reach in and pull it out.

Hyperreality ,

Depends. The cover is resting on the inside lip which prevents moisture getting in. Ie. this cover is actually significantly bigger than the hole it's covering.

Eg. if this cover is 25x25, but it's covering a hole which is less than 18x18 (c=25.5), it'll be quite hard to drop the cover in.

Hyperreality ,

It's next to a drainpipe...

Hyperreality , (edited )

Square covers like this are common globally. AFAIK also in the US:

https://manholecoversdirect.com/products/square-manhole-covers-and-frames/

Setting square tiles or paving stones around a circular cover is a pain in the ass.

But it wouldn't be the first time the US is weird, like the whole imperial measurements thing, so whatever. Or maybe you live in a state that decided square manhole covers were biblically incorrect.

  1. AFAIK 60km/h let alone 60mph e-bikes aren't road legal in the Netherlands. 60mph is something like 95km/h. To give you an idea, most motorways are 100km/h in the Netherlands. To drive something that fast you'd need a full motorcycle license, insurance, etc.
  2. Certainly they're not allowed on cycle paths.
  3. Even if they were, Amsterdam has a citywide speed limit of 30km/h. That's under 20mp/h.
Hyperreality ,

Yeah.

This is why I bought myself some blink cameras. Obviously, privacy is shit (and I've factored this) and you're affectively forced to pay for use their cloud service, but at least the (initial) purchase price is cheap.

But I've 'bought' cameras for far more, only for them to hobble functionality a few years down the line. And they've had vulnerabilities or whatever.

For the sensitive stuff, I have a camera with an SD card, but obviously phone notifications is a big selling point of systems like this.

Hyperreality ,

Keep it on the old 1TB hdd and buy a sata to usb cable or usb conversion kit?

It says it'll be free for Window 365 users. Ie. 70 bucks and that includes office.

Obviously it's not great, but it's better than adobe.

Windows 95 cost two hundred 30 years ago.

AFAIK European law isn't often based on common law, but Napoleonic Code / civil law. Ie. precedent is less relevant.

Also, given Meta's been fined 2.5 billion euros in the past few years, it sounds like they're going after the big guys first.

UK Trial: Pornhub's Chatbot Halts Millions from Accessing Child Abuse Content (www.wired.com)

A trial program conducted by Pornhub in collaboration with UK-based child protection organizations aimed to deter users from searching for child abuse material (CSAM) on its website. Whenever CSAM-related terms were searched, a warning message and a chatbot appeared, directing users to support services. The trial reported a...

Obviously don't google this, but IRC one of the terms used was lemon party.

Hyperreality ,

Suspect it depends on where you live, but you're not wrong.

I think I've driven a million kilometres by now, it's all become so fucking boring and second nature, that you start really being sloppy and distracted. Because you gained so much experience, you start to (unconciously) overestimate your skills.

But the two hands thing really is necessary for if you hit something slippy or need to make an unexpected manoeuvre. The risks of driving are incredibly low, but if shit does hit the fan you're in for a world of trouble if you're doing something else.

Hyperreality ,

Lawsuit waiting to happen.

PSA for admins and mods: GDPR fines can go up to 20 million euros per case. To give you an idea, Meta has been fined over 2.5 billion euros in recent years. If you think that's bad, the real worry is Germany's NetzDG.

Hyperreality ,

I dunno man. I just replaced as much as possible with lavender, rosemary and heather. (Check which works for your climate).

That way the bees get something to eat, and your garden smells nice.

Hyperreality ,

Cheer up, today will almost certainly be better than tomorrow.

Hyperreality ,

That's not really a choice you can make. Also idiots don't know they're idiots.

Hyperreality ,

Rice absorbs moisture. The moisture might make it more conductive.

Hyperreality ,

This isn't fair.

There's a bug in one of the most recent security updates on windows, something to do with the size of the recovery partition, so at the moment plenty of windows users aren't updating or failing to update, and it's not as if windows has fixed it yet either so most users are stuck waiting on it.

In other words: sometimes far too many updates, sometimes not enough (timely) updates, often broken updates.

Hyperreality ,

If you want to use imessage on android:

(includes self-hosting options)

If you want to use whatsapp:

If someone else has an old (and/or prepay) sim which can receive texts, you can authenticate whatsapp that way. IRC you can also authenticate with a landline. Install whatsapp using the landline number, wait for SMS authentication to fail, then it should ask to call you. Say yes, and you'll get a call with the authentication code. Et voila.

My nieces and nephews are all young children so i definitely want to encourage/educate them to get off corporate controlled communications channels

Good luck with that, is all I can say. Kids are very susceptible to peer pressure, especially as they enter their teen years. It's only when they're in their late teens that they'll open up again and start becoming more critical.

Affordable Android Excellence: Best Smartphones Under $200 in 2024 (www.gizchina.com)

While flagship smartphones boast impressive features, spending $1,000 is not a prerequisite for a satisfying Android experience nowadays. If you’re in need of a new smartphone and have a budget of approximately $200, there are numerous excellent options available. Surprisingly, some of the best Android phones under $200 come...

Hyperreality ,

When I bought my phone a few years ago, motorola offered one with relatively stock android, no forced install of facebook or whatever, several years of (timely) android updates, and a large battery. A few years down the line, I'm still getting updates and the battery still lasts days.

And it was plastic and came with a cover, so it's survived the occasional fall just fine.

Honestly don't get why you'd spend more on something that can so easily be stolen.

Hyperreality , (edited )

Unfortunately IME it's a no go if you're using banking or government/authenticator apps. (Your mileage may vary and this may change.)

Not how it should be, but how it is.

Hyperreality ,

How are you supposed to fine 7 vulernabilities in an hour anyways?

Threaten the interviewer with a knife until they give you at least 7 vulnerabilities. tapsheadmeme

Hyperreality ,

You can use windows 11 without TPM. It's just not made easy for casual users.

I know this is linuxmemes and that this will be an unpopular opinion, but a lot of the complaints about windows I see linux users make, are based on a lack of knowledge. Sure, MS doesn't make it particularly easy, but linux isn't always particularly easy to install or get working well for casual users either. Whether it's linux or windows, a quick google goes a long way to solving most issues.

I'm behind the idea of GNU, but it's weird how so many linux memes could easily be turned into equally ill informed pro-MS memes. Obviously, MS isn't a nice company and I don't think anyone's a genuine MS fanboy, but still.

Hyperreality ,

You can install windows in a brick wall.

Hyperreality , (edited )

The same thing can be said about plenty of configurations and linux. Plenty of laptops or the wrong nvidia card, and you're likely to have to find a workaround too.

Hell, bypassing the TPM requirement is almost certainly easier than creating your own driver for an nvidia card or problemsolving wifi issues because your laptop's network card manufacturer doesn't give a fuck about linux users.

Hyperreality ,

There are also ways to get around nvidia cards without good linux drivers or laptops with unsupported wifi cards.

Hyperreality , (edited )

Let's be real. It's a lie that linux's only requirement is a CPU. Wrong hardware, because some vendors don't support linux properly or at all, and linux isn't fun.

Hyperreality , (edited )

I find it annoying that the community pretends otherwise.

Someone goes on a forum with their laptop with an nvidia card and a wifi card no one's ever heard of, and more likely than not he'll be told it'll be easy to get linux running on it.

Hell, I was wrong. It's not just that a lot of linux users don't know much about windows, they also don't seem to know about the issues people can face with linux on some less or non-compatible hardware.

You can be a linux fan and admit that companies like Nvidia, Realtek or HP often don't give much of a shit about linux, but some pretend otherwise.

Hyperreality , (edited )

Also I don’t even bother with figuring out printers on Linux. I’m almost certain they all universally work

Almost.

And this is the problem. The linux community is basically an example of survivorship bias. People who had no significant issues or were able to solve them are understandably fans. People who ran into a weird issue that they couldn't solve, are far more likely to give up or not be a member of the community anymore.

If your a Windows fan that fine but don’t pretend we don’t try to make it easy.

And then when someone does run into an issue, members of the community will often call them stupid. "They've run into an issue they can't solve. Linux is easy! That must mean they're stupid. I've never run into an issue I couldn't solve, linux is easy, that must mean I'm smart."

Vanity, it's the Devil's favourite sin.

It's a similar attitude you'll see in rich people, who overestimate how much talent was involved in their success, and underestimate how much luck was involved. "Why are they poor? They must be stupid. I've never had money issues, making money is easy if you're smart like me."

Here's the thing. I am genuinely a fan of the philosophy of GNU. Which is why I want everyone to be welcomed into the community, helped when they do run into issues, rather than to have them face snarky comments from linux users who think they know more than they actually do.

Hyperreality ,
Hyperreality ,

No, that's a genuinely good and well informed reason to not use windows.

Hyperreality ,

they’re literally producing drivers for their cards for Linux,

For some of their cards as the article mentions.

I’m not sure what else you want them to do.

Regularly release drivers for more of their graphic cards, including older ones like the GTX 10-series which are still incredibly popular.

Disney+ has started cracking down on password sharing in the US (www.engadget.com)

Disney+ started getting strict about password sharing in Canada last year, and now it's expanding the restriction to the US. According to The Verge, the streaming service has been sending out emails to its subscribers in the country, notifying them about a change in its terms of service. Its service agreement now states that...

Hyperreality ,

Great news to be honest. I hope disney sees a similar spike in profits so they can make more great shows for me to pirate.

Hyperreality , (edited )

Look, no hate, but I always find these kinds of comments funny because I've been reading them for over twenty years.

It's not going to happen, certainly not in any significant numbers.

Hell, look at the fediverse. The vast majority of internet users find signing up to mastodon hard, let alone lemmy. How the hell are these people supposed to install linux, for example when they follow many an 'easy' linux installation guide, but then find Rufus isn't able to create a bootable USB stick in fat32? How are they supposed to verify their data, or hell change the bios settings when the guide they read gives them the wrong key to press to enter the bios? And then if by some miracle they do manage to install linux, you expect them to move away from all the apps they've grown used to? They'll try to install MS office on linux and blame this not working on linux.

TLDR: Gretchen! Stop trying to make mass linux adoption happen! It's not going to happen!

Hyperreality , (edited )

Meh. Lime mortar absorbs and releases moisture. IRC "Roman" lime concrete is much the same.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge fan, but that kind of thing isn't compatible with modern insulation. You end up with damp and mould issues in the walls.

Sure it works great in uninsulated stuff though. But people and governments want every room in a building to be insulated nowadays. The whole one warm room, the rest of the building is cold and you'd better wear a three piece suit or heavy wool jumper thing, is abhorrent to our spoiled western arses.

Also: the Romans didn't build their buildings that high. AFAIK Lime concrete has lower tensile and compressive strength, which is an issue with high rise buildings.
