Just hold on for a while. If those deer keep at it, at some point the wolves will multiply and become a greater force to control the deer population.

Unless they're the same sex. In that case, you're shafted.

This is the kind of parenting that may lead to kids leaving home & disappearing from the parents' lives the day they turn eighteen.

Iron_Lynx ,

Am I seeing this right? Are you calling one of the defining works of Fantasy literature a "Christian book?"

Iron_Lynx ,

He's right though.

Mac & cheese really is unimpressive. Spaghetti Carbonara is way better, even with inaccurate ingredients (e.g. using bacon instead of guanciale or even pancetta).

Though if you do insist on making it 'Murican style, try melting the cheese into a bechamel sauce and adding some diced ham or cubed bacon. The former makes it way creamier, even if it ends up standing for a while, and the latter just adds some neat flavour and texture. Stick with ham and/or bacon, or maybe very few other things, otherwise it stops being mac & cheese imo.

I saw a story once of someone who asked internet strangers whether they were the asshole because they hated someone's mac & cheese. When they described what went into the stuff, it was full of added things, a quarter of which would already stop it from being mac & cheese, and half of which either conflict with each other, or are stuff which if they were the sole additive would give me a reason to nope out of the dish.

With both mac & cheese and spaghetti carbonara, I'd say less is more.

And even a smaller Bakfiets will readily handle over 99% of the listed cases.

A step heavier. For the London example, think more like the Overground, the Purple Train or Thameslink. Or the many railways radiating out.

For other examples, think systems like the LIRR in NYC, the RER in Paris or the S-bahn in most major German cities. (though the Berlin one functions more as a metro that's just legally a train)

Iron_Lynx , (edited )

Re: legally a train
Metros and anything lighter are governed by different laws than trains. So German U-bahn is legally a tram, governed by the BOStrab, while S-bahn is legally a train, governed by the EBO

Iron_Lynx ,

I tried swiping down with my index and middle finger, but it does nothing. I'm outta options. You're on your own. Sorry mate.

Iron_Lynx ,

OwO

Iron_Lynx ,

With that attitude it will be. Just because it's a hassle does not mean it's not worth doing.

Really though, the most ardent defence of USC units is fuelled by great amounts of Copium. The US Customary set of measurements is several independent systems of measurements which often radically different origins and sometimes irrational conversions, all stacked upon each other and dressed in a trench coat. For instance, the mile has Roman origins while the inch and foot were defined separately, much later, and with a lot of regional variation. The French foot was longer than the English foot, which is why Napoleon was listed as 5'2" tall while he was actually closer to 5'9", or 1.71 m, which was pretty average for the time.

Which one of these is more straightforward to calculate:

  • You are tasked with installing a rail along a 1 mile long bridge. You know you can use two half inch bolts to affix it every three feet. How many bolts do you need?

  • You are tasked with installing a rail along a 1,5 km long bridge. You know you can use two M12 bolts to affix it every metre. How many bolts do you need?

Conversions within dimensions in USC require you to memorise arbitrary conversion numbers. Conversions within dimensions in SI require you to move the comma a few spots.

Besides, if the US Customary system of units is so great, why did most of the world voluntarily switch to SI units?

You cannot complain about it being literally 1984 if you're larping as the Ministry Of Truth 😛

    Iron_Lynx ,

I recall spotting a few things about Image Generators having their training data contaminated using generated images, and the output becoming significantly worse. So yeah, I guess LLMs and IGA's need natural sources, or it gets more inbred than the Habsburgs.

    Iron_Lynx ,

Not to forget the union puts restrictions on how often the boss can call you out, so you may actually have the time to play those video games.

    Iron_Lynx ,

Not gonna lie, that title sounds like it could be a Sabaton lyric.

    Iron_Lynx ,

So I was right that it's a lyric, just not a Sabaton one 😅

My gf does not like the texture of onions.

The taste is fine with her, so I think I'm gonna have to get used to cooking for her with minced onions...

    Iron_Lynx ,

I feel bad for my brother right now, since his gf cannot have onions and garlic due to a food intolerance. At least spring onions are still tolerable, but still...

    Iron_Lynx ,

    skeleton crews

I'm not a manager, but if I had a business critical three person job and some busywork, I'd schedule four people minimum. Probably five if the busywork is important at the time.

    Iron_Lynx ,

They're pretty interesting. Look one up if you have the time, like during a break at work

    Iron_Lynx ,

I'd call them less a solution, more an attempt at harm reduction.

And the only things they'll properly resolve are tailpipe emissions and idling noise. At least one of which is of no concern when dealing with the externalities of car traffic.

If you really want to solve the environmental impact of transportation, you minimise the need for transportation. Put homes and workplaces close together, offer mass alternatives for the pairs where you really do need motorised mobility solutions, and minimise the number of situations where it's more convenient to take a car. Ban on-street parking and heavily tax off-street parking. Need to park your car in the city? Hope you can afford to pay an arm and a leg. Oh, you can't? Looks the Park & Ride at the train station two towns over is the nearest alternative. Don't worry though, the trains go six times an hour and a day ticket is, like, four quid max.

    Iron_Lynx ,

Look mate, if you're going to shove the "tHe stATeS arE ToO bIG, thus wE cANNot SOlvE The transIt ProbleM" rhetoric on us, please find another place to wallow in your lack of trains while assuming car industry rhetoric as undeniable fact.

Also, your claim has been debunked and reclarified so often that I'm not going to begin to explain just how wrong you are.

    Iron_Lynx ,

Christian conservative ancap propaganda to be more precise. The guy behind it was once recorded saying "Government is not the solution to our problems, government is the problem."

    Iron_Lynx ,

I remember someone got into such a billboard and replaced the ad with IKEA-style instructions on how to replace the ads in those billboards.
