Y'all need to get yourselves that Windows 10 2021 LTSC IoT badboy (IoT part is important). It's supported until 2032 and it's only bloat is edge. If I had to use windows again it would be that.

You don't even have to be rooted. RCS won't work using a non-rooted custom ROM.

Mint is good but if you want the best touch screen support with gestures and an automatic on screen keyboard, you will want a distro that is using the gnome desktop environment (it is also android-like). Well known distros that come with this are Fedora Workstation, ZorinOS, and Ubuntu.

It's based on it yes, but they use different desktop environments. The desktop mint uses is called Cinnamon.

Of course! And not even just laptops, I like to test/install Linux on about anything possible... I must know the answer to "Will it Linux?".

You could check out distros like mint, zorinOS, fedora, popos, and Nobara. I think all of those will come with nvidia drivers so you don't have to set them up manually. Nobara in particular is set up for gaming out of the box, I don't know how well it actually works personally. You could just install Ventoy on a USB stick then load up multiple Linux distros on it, then just select the one you one to try live at boot. Mint and zorin will be the most familiar.

I really wish DE + auto tiling combo was more of a thing. Like what Pop! has going with gnome currently. The convenience of a DE with an actual WM. Yes I know there are extensions, qtile, etc. Having this out of the box would be fantastic, so much time is wasted moving windows around... tiling then manually.. or having windows overlap, oh the horror.

You can also set your DNS in settings to an adblocking DNS such as Mullvad, that works really well for me. Rethink is also for for more precise control.

You could always try tailscale until you figure something else out. Its not really self hosting but its better than having everything accessible to the public internet. Set it up in browser and follow their set up guide then install tailscale app on Truenas and whatever other device you plan on using it with.

I knew it! I had the sneaking suspicion that this was the case. About a month ago I updated my phone to Android 14 (custom rom) and noticed I started having trouble with RCS after a couple days since the update. I knew I was going to lose the play integrity but whatever. RCS was nice but I will not bend... just pushing me a step further to de-googling my phone. Lol it's funny how they cry to Apple about supporting RCS but yet refuse to allow third party apps or phones that don't meet their requirements, pathetic. There should be an encrypted text communication standard that isn't controlled by one company who can lock you out because you don't have approved software, that is ridiculous. That being said, I wish Signal was still a SMS app.

I agree but there's 2 apps there is no good alternative for and they are paid, at least one of them I am learning Android studio + Kotlin to recreate it. The other I have found Wx which is OK but besides that there is no good advanced weather radar.

Yea tried that already, one won't work at all and one will stop working after sometime. I assume it still has something to do with google services. I have not tried with microg. Either way.. I'll get there to google-free land eventually its a work in progress. Sometimes I do consider just ripping off the band-aid and installing raw lineage os then learn to deal with it from there.

Imagine if companies quit with the bs fluff talk and just told it like is. I think it might be easier to take their shit if they just told you things straight up.

A recent example of this is the skiff email they sent out to everyone. Six paragraphs of time wasting fluff that the end user doesn't give a damn about. They could have simply said something along the lines of "We have sold our company to notion and will be sunsetting our products in 6 months. This means you will need to find another email provider within that time.".

What issues did you have getting it to work? I have been playing hots on Linux for a few years now..nearly a couple of hours everyday, but I've not needed to install it for a long time so I've probably forgotten what was needed to set it up.     Thanks for the heads up. Just today I noticed the new fossify apps in fdroid.. didn't realize it was forked from simple mobile tools. I will be downloading and replacing my notes app when it becomes available.
