China has an active genocide going on, recently effectively annexed Hong Kong, and is threatening Taiwan. They're also a dictatorship, while the US at least has some semblance of democracy. A country like that exerting their power over the world unchecked seems in no way better. Probably not really worse than the US either, at least whenever there's a republican president.

Achievements or multiplayer matching not being implemented in the game itself isn't on GOG. They still allow you to download and launch any game you've bought, without even requiring galaxy.

Also lesser known is the fact that there are DRM-free games on steam. Download them once, you can play without having steam running or even installed. Using a client to download isn't inherently DRM either.

The second highest voted thing is mildly misleading because left parties are a lot more fractured, especially in EU elections. The afd could have 11% while 9 left wing partirs have 9.8% and be the most voted party, but that would be a better result than we have now with it being the second most voted.

The results are bad, but 16% is at least nowhere nesr a majority. I'm honestly more concerned about the CDU moving closer to the afd and still ending up with 30%, seems almost like many people don't like the afd because they've been told afd bad, but still agree with much of their ideology.

LwL ,

I do this, I hate it, but I can't get rid of it so I've started to accept it.

LwL ,

There are animal haters that poison them. It's not entirely a false equivalency.

The issue with it mainly comes from dogs being a different species while humans are still just humans and someones skin color has no significant correlation to their behaviour.

It's still similarly stupid to hate all dogs by default because dogs still have personalities and some can be just fine. And I say this as someone that doesn't like most dogs either.

LwL ,

I agree with pretty much all of that but I still wouldn't say I hate dogs, both because none of that is the dogs fault and it's still possible to have pleasant interactions with one. I would just much rather not be around a dog than be around one. This might just be a difference in what hate implies.

I feel similarly about children. Theyre loud and annoying and I dislike being around them, but I still have no intention of ever hurting one and would like them to be happy anyway.

LwL ,

The intro to the very article you linked states 3 exceptions lol

LwL ,

Can't wait for that one to go horribly wrong.

LwL ,

Youtube has forced it onto their creators for a while. Censor swears or risk upsetting the almighty algorithm and getting demonetized, because apparently american companies don't like being associated with swearing.

LwL ,

Allowing everyone to ping @everyone is asking for it though.

LwL ,

If it's a public server (which the op would imply) then it's a problem because any idiot could join. Of course for some small server with friends it's fine. Though I have it off on mine anyway because people assume they don't have perms and will just write @everyone anyway

LwL ,

Actually determining the total gain seems insanely hard to impossible. Percentage of turnover is just easier to implement, and still effective if it can scale up as it can for gdpr.

LwL ,

More like because finding english speaking actors is a lot easier in an english speaking country, and also the writer likely doesn't speak every language that would be relevant. Plenty of countries don't get dubs of movies or series and people can still understand and enjoy them just fine. Though it probably increases appeal or there just wouldn't br dubs.

LwL ,

I once failed a test in politics class because after examining both sides I stated this issue does not affect me and I can see merit in both positions, therefore I do not have an opinion on the correct course of action.

Not like the grade mattered in the slightest but that was actual bullshit.

LwL ,

It's easy to say everyone should have human rights. But what if one person goes against anothers human rights? What is a just punishment?

And that's before even getting into what rights people should have. You can very easily have everyone be theoretically equal while still effectively disadvantaging some people (and getting rid of that entirely is not even possible, we can just minimize it). There's a lot to debate.

What I don't get is why there would ever be a debate about excluding some people from human rights without them first violating others'. The only argument for that is "if we oppress this group, this other group will have better lives". Which is often true, sure, but that's just being a selfish asshole.

Hard to interpret from that song, the lyrics seem more critical of european imperialism and the response to immigration (shooting immigrant boats) than the opposite to me. I can't find anything about right wing lyrical themes in oomph songs from a quick google in german either, so I wouldn't worry I guess. Maybe someone knows more.

The reason traffic moves at above the speed limit is that people see the speed limit and go slightly above it because it feels fine.

Speed limits are absolutely necessary in residential areas, and still a good thing on highways. High speeds are insanely fuel inefficient and they do also endanger people more.

My country has been debating putting a speed limit on highways that previously didn't have one so I've heard quite a lot about this topic.

LwL ,

Can definitely agree they need to be context based, dunno how the situation there is in the US precisely.

I can also say from experience though that no speed limit doesn't mean there aren't tons of overtakes, and speed changes when overtaking isn't possible. Not everyone is comfortable with the same speed. If you have a 6 lane highway without speed limit here, you have trucks going 80 km/h on the rightmost lane, some cars following them at the same speed and other cars going around 100 that often use the rightmost lane too and then overtake every truck. Then cars going around 120 in the middle lane except some go 130 and others 110 so lots of overtakes happen. Then you have the leftmost lane where everything from 140-220 tends to be (def skews to the lower end though) and you can guess the result.

LwL ,

I didn't use mine in class because it wasn't allowed and teachers would take it away if I did. Is that not a thing anymore? Or maybe just a german thing in the first place.

That being said, don't need a smartphone to play games in class. I was a god at snake on my graphing calculator...

There's a difference between "it wouldn't be so bad if they die" and "i hope they died in the worst way possible". I think the former about quite a few people, but while there's some fucked up part of me that delights in assholes getting what they deserve, I'm still not gonna celebrate someone going through torture.

Tbh I just don't think the people upvoting this meme are likely the same people, i constantly see comments on here dehumanizing people for having backwards-ass views on things, which would be perfectly in line with saying the genocide is okay because many of the people affected hold similar views.

It's obviously not, not just because that's bound to not apply to everyone, but also because people can change and are a product of their environment.

Gearbox is also the developer of the borderlands games. Doesn't seem impossible they'll just let the studio do its thing, and inany case they're far from unrelated to game dev.

Though I'd also be concerned any time something I like is bought by another company.

LwL ,

Absolutely any policy that protects people can protect neo nazis. If a platform wants someone gone for being a dickwad, they can just ban them (not that that's gonna happen to nazis on twitter). Questioning sensible rules because they happen to protect bad people sometimes is some dystopian shit. It's the same line of argument as wanting to ban e2e encryption to scan messages for csam.

Doxxing is a crime in some places, only selectively enforcing that would be quite the problem.

LwL ,

I'd also argue that the two can be related, a big reason I find social interaction draining is having to fight my anxiety at all times. The few ppl I'm truly comfortable around I can interact with for much longer.

LwL ,

I've always took that scene to be way more about not panicking and thus missing the obvious solution than any sort of boomer humor.

LwL ,

Boxen, presumably. Punching. So it's saying punch nazis

LwL ,

Coffee is bitter. There's shit coffee that's pretty much only bitter and nothing else, but any coffee will have bitterness.

Though I agree that "very very bitter" sounds like bad coffee.

The highest GDPR fine was 1.2 billion. As far as I know nothing is stopping the EU from imposing higher and higher fines with continued breach of guidelines there, and I would expect these fair market regulations to work similarly.

Also for reference, that fine was against meta, who had 34 billion in revenue in 2023. So that fine cost them around 3% of their global revenue, which I'm sure is tolerable, but definitely approaching the point of hurting.

I am heavily questioning the life of a confined cat being better than the life of a cat that is free to go where it wants. The moment you have 2 cats that get along it's unlikely to be a bad life, but you have no way of telling how another being unable to communicate complex thoughts to you considers their quality of life to be.

LwL ,

That is true (well, where I live there are few actual dangers to cats but that's just region dependent) but in general I believe a short, but more fulfilling life to be better than a longer, less fulfilling one. Which I'm aware is subjective.

LwL ,

Clothing measurements aren't even consistent between countries, there's effectively no standard. If where you live measurements are based on something sensible, that's pretty lucky.

The XS/S/M/L/XL sizes of course differ for men vs women, and EU sizes which to me have always seemed like an arbitrary number do too. But usually individual clothing manufacturers provide precise measurements to translate into the generic sizes, because of course that's not consistent either. It's a complete shitshow, but ultimately gender size conversions aren't going to help you with the manufacturer differences anyway. But those really should be more easily available inside clothing stores

LwL ,

Not the guy you replied to, but I'll give you one: if you are male, it is (or at least was last federal election) impossible to be at the highest spot of any candidate list of the german green party. There was a hard rule that spot 1 had to be a woman and then it alternates. The alternation rule seems pretty alright, but blanket excluding someone from the #1 spot because of gender is pretty blatant sexism. It doesn't matter that women were in that position and worse in the pretty recent past, 2 wrongs don't make a right (also ironically this kind of ignores other gender identities entirely but they'd probably be given the woman treatment as they're clearly generally disadvantaged, which seems alright). Something like having at least 45% at #1 of both men and women and then keeping the alternating rule seems a lot more sensible, or even flat out forcing 50% and flipping the genders each election.

I can also spend a very long time talking about how affirmative action in general feels more like the lazy route to achieve a somewhat better state since socioeconomic factors play a huge role in education and those heavily correlate with ethnicity, but it's unfair to exclude people based on their skin color (almost like that's racism by definition), but whatever. I haven't seen any cases of it being actually abused, and overall just fast tracking more representation of all sorts of people into all kinds of jobs and social groups will likely help a lot against racism in the long run. It just feels like the inferior means to that end.

Germany has things like giving disabled people preference in job applications given otherwise equal qualifications which I think is great as they most likely have much fewer options overall, and I believe that might be considered affirmative action too? I'm not super familiar given that that's not a term here.

LwL ,

Sorry I rambled on so much, I am “stealing time” at my job and lost my train of thought a few times as I left and revisited this comment. :)

Totally didn't do the same thing...

Anyway, I mostly agree with you, just fyi regarding the german green party: Annalena Baerbock was their chancellor candidate, Habeck was effectively what in the US would be a president's running mate. A duo, but Baerbock was iirc always going to be chancellor if the greens got a majority. And yes, they have joint leadership of the party.

That policy has to do with the german voting system, where each party has to provide a list of candidates for each state. Then according to how many votes the party gets, proportionally many people from that list get into the Bundestag, the list is in order. And that's the one that had to alternate.

The greens as of last federal election are big enough to where this effectively isn't going to single out anyone, they will get a few candidates from every state into the Bundestag. However the principle of forcing the gender of slot 1 just left a bit of a bad taste. Still voted for them and will most likely do that again.

LwL ,

Can't attest to their intentions but "speak for yourself" would be the continuation of the ken m "we are all x on this blessed day" meme, whether or not that's what you were going for.
