In my personal experience it has been getting consistently worse over the last 6 or so years. It used to be nearly perfect but now it is somewhat common that the directions will be wrong or misleading

Player2 ,

Ventoy is very useful for diagnostics too

Player2 ,

Textadept is also pretty cool, it's portable and FOSS unlike Notepad++

Player2 ,

The OS is the worst part of the Quest line. The hardware is pretty cool but software completely removes it from consideration for me.

Player2 ,

Pretty sure they explicitly stated that it was just for entertainment. Who would come out of that video genuinely thinking that they recommended you to daily drive a Justin Bieber distro?

Player2 ,

It looks like NAND and therefore SSD pricing is trending up currently due to some supply limitations. If you want to get some large drives it might be best to try to do it soon, or be prepared for a wait/inflated pricing.

Player2 ,

This is going to change, ergo the news article

Linux Note-taking app that supports CalDAV

Hi, does anybody know any notetaking app which supports sync with caldav server ? I am self-hosting a Radicale server which on android with DAVx5 client and jtx Board app works pretty well! I have searched on web but haven't found any desktop alternative to jtxBoard yet which supports this protocol. Anybody using this setup ?

Player2 ,

Syncthing works very well for Logseq, I use it on 4 different devices and changes only take a couple seconds to be synchronized. The app even automatically refreshes the data when a change is made so you don't have to worry about only having one instance open at a time.

Player2 ,

Or take your money but send you 720p anyway

Player2 ,

They haven't banned it yet, they're just looking to do so at some point

Player2 ,

Try tablets, less waste and less messy

Player2 ,

No actually, sorry for being unclear

Player2 ,

Toothpaste tablets. Pop one in mouth, chew, instant toothpaste. So nice to travel with too since they're dry

Player2 ,

Interesting report, though for me they have been just as if not more reliable than paste. Been using them for a few years exclusively and my oral health has actually improved, though that might be coincidence.

Either way, the most important benefit for me is the lack of a plastic package. I just put the tablets in my old metal tin, very efficient!

Player2 ,

I have not seen a consensus that they are not as effective, and they have definitely been great for me personally. Once you dissolve it in your mouth, it's literally the same thing as traditional paste: same active ingredients, foaming, the lot.

Player2 ,

Disagree, never liked OpenAI trying to claim a generic term as the name of their product.

Player2 ,

That's what I do, everything local only and then remote access through Tailscale

Player2 ,

I just enjoy putting on a hoodie, turning down the lights, and running updates manually every couple days. Makes me feel like hackerman

Apple (slrpnk.net)

I don't care if anyone has a Xiaomi, Oneplus, Samsung, etc. Each brand is using a modified version of Android, and they chose to be compatible with each other. But for example the "blue vs green bubble" drama is a thing specifically because of Apple locking their unsuspecting users into a closed ecosystem. And it sure isn't...

Player2 ,

They are all kind of terrible right now, at least for me. I hate what the big companies are doing, and the smaller projects such as Fairphone simply aren't good enough yet. Guess I'll try to make my existing one last for as long as possible, though that was already the plan.

Player2 ,

Display, battery life, performance, supported bands, software reliability, camera quality, etc.

I know I am one of those weirdos that asks for a lot from a mobile device, but I want something that can act as a high speed hotspot for 5 devices and a desktop environment at the same time, while playing back high resolution media and charging fast. This kind of thing has always been possible with Samsung's flagship, but now every generation it feels like yet more is removed compared to the older one. I'm still on the S21U and while I'm not very happy with it, I haven't seen anything better, including the new Samsungs.

Maybe I should set my sights lower, but it just frustrates me because these are all things my S9+ could do in 2017.

I would argue that 2D printing is a lot more complicated than 3D, and it's not even close

Player2 ,

For 3D printing to work, you basically just need some standard motors to move a thing that gets hot around. Yes it needs to be pretty precise, but it's only printing at a single point that moves. Classic 2D printing not only prints across the whole sheet at once, it is also sometimes expected to do it in color (which does take multiple passes usually). As for the technological aspects of conventional printers, I really don't consider myself an expert, there are great videos online. However by my understanding, a laser is often used to trace the exact contents of the page so that the depositing material is picked up and placed. That sort of light manipulation is already more complicated than everything most 3D printers do.

Basically, you could build a new 3D printer in your garage using off the shelf parts and some knowhow, but good luck even repairing a 2D printer with a serious problem in its printing mechanism, though this difficulty is certainly not made better by companies such as HP

Player2 ,

This is what I do for Logseq, works very well

Player2 ,

USB C is just a connector, you might be referring to Displayport over USB C which is basically just the same standard with a different connector at the end. That or Thunderbolt I guess

DNS blocking has the same effect but allows you to stay connected

Unfortunately for that outcome, brute forcing with more compute is pretty helpful for now

Google apologizes for ‘missing the mark’ after Gemini generated racially diverse Nazis (www.theverge.com)

Google apologizes for ‘missing the mark’ after Gemini generated racially diverse Nazis::Google says it’s aware of historically inaccurate results for its Gemini AI image generator, following criticism that it depicted historically white groups as people of color.

Player2 ,

There is a difference between having actually diverse data sources and secretly adding the word "diverse" to each image generation prompt

If you were really paranoid you'd take some scissors to the internet tube

Player2 OP ,

It was just a matter of time then until something broke? Guess I'll need to do some more research on how to best manage the services I want to run. Good thing I didn't come into this hobby hoping to reduce the amount of headaches

Player2 OP ,

Interesting, I think I did actually do that. I guess my best bet for now is to just nuke the LXCs then and move everything to a new VM. Thanks for the advice!

Player2 OP ,

The files were on a mountpoint, completely separate drive. This has also been the case for all the previous times I ran an update, though I did recently move these files to a different drive mounted the same way. I got some sort of permission wrong maybe?

Will definitely set up a better backup system as soon as I can

Player2 OP ,

Update in case anyone is interested: I figured out what caused the problem. When I mounted the new drive I used to store my configurations onto Proxmox, I completely forgot to make the relevant /etc/fstab entry. The drive mounted successfully so I didn't realize at the time that I had forgotten to do that step. The update I ran from apt-get included a kernel update, so I restarted the machine to complete it. Since I hadn't modified fstab, my new drive was not mounted when the system started up again. Even though the drive wasn't mounted correctly, I still somehow had access to some incomplete version of the files in its directory (no idea how that works). So no fault of Docker, LXCs or Proxmox, purely PEBKAC.

Despite getting the files back I will still work towards a more resilient system and more regular backups.

Player2 ,

Why? Their drive failure stats are consistently the worst on the chart, and by a wide margin

Player2 ,

Hmm, I don't know the precise terminology, I meant bypass as a way to temporarily get around the rolling code system without actually breaking the code itself. You're probably right though

Player2 ,

Yes correct, just pointing out that it is technically possible to get around the system

Player2 ,

Good thing I ordered one a couple days ago

Player2 ,

Build multi-use guns with hobbyist supplies in your house and then we'll talk

Player2 ,

You may be right. From my understanding it was quite difficult to build a weapon that is accurate and functional after several shots. Either way it seems quite a bit more involved and more dangerous to the builder than a breadboard and a radio transmitter you can buy off the shelf.
