What's wrong with caddie? Not in the loop

RustyNova ,

Then why does the meme depict users leaving?

RustyNova ,

No, but I'm trying to get the meme

RustyNova ,

But at least Firefox is just compatibility, and not phasing out v2

RustyNova ,

NGL, most of them fit perfectly, unlike arch

RustyNova ,

ROG spending all the points in style again

... And it's working

RustyNova ,

Cinnamon is neat.
That's it

RustyNova ,

True. It's Plasma without all the Plasma fluff. It works, it's simple, lacks Wayland but it's being worked on nicely.

I use Linux Mint as my daily driver, and honestly, it just works™ (except using CUDA heavily, but it's mostly little hiccups). Tried switching to more power user distros, but always having to fix a little thing here and there is getting annoying.

RustyNova ,

Yes and no. While you are legally in the clear, in practice no one read those because of the huge amount of legalese.

True consent is only obtainable if the person consenting understands what it means. Or else it's just legal consent.

RustyNova ,

It's simple. Like git, you search the command on the internet

RustyNova ,

Dang. I didn't knew that 🧡 was so popular. I thought it would be ♥️ but alright

RustyNova ,

I'd even add that now 99% of the distro have a gui over the package manager. Have an android or iPhone? You already have experience in installing stuff in an easier way than windows

RustyNova ,

Uh. Didn't knew that.

RustyNova ,

I hate snaps, but NextCloud snap is way easier to than the other methods, so it gets a pass... Only one

RustyNova ,

You still need to install NextCloud next. Then if you are on a home lab you'll probably need a reverse proxy too

On Ubuntu it's just install > go to config > whitelist all urls

RustyNova ,

To be fair, a moron got full control of aperture so...

RustyNova ,

Snapshots are definitely a hit or miss with me. I nearly never use them, but when I need to recover a file it's awesome. The only system related problem I had with Nvidia drivers but it was actually better to reinstall so it does all the install configuration itself

Although the most problems I had with it is backup of data. I tend to hoard too much

RustyNova ,

🤓 Actchualy it's "The end is never the end is never ... the end is loading""

RustyNova ,

If you include a maze in your pic, at least make it big enough to not have an headache while trying to solve it

RustyNova ,

Yes. It is bloated. But not for the reasons you may think.

Live OSes need to fit multiple requirements compared to the installed ones. They need to:

  • Install the OS without internet
  • Provide a test ground for the OS
  • Be a way to repair damaged OS

So of course it's bloated, but in a good way. You may be already familiar with Ubuntu, and not care about the live OS part, so it would be bloat for you.
You may not care about setting up disks, so GParted is bloat for you, etc...

If you want a less bloated installer, some other distros like debian give net installers

RustyNova ,

That's the raw documentation. There's plenty of other articles that are actually useful.

RustyNova ,

That's what I meant. Helped me with set up my odd pc easily

RustyNova ,

On the contrary, if you do that, some users wouldn't even notice they switched to linux!

Or you can do a little trolling

RustyNova ,

May I know why Linux Mint is that bad of an OS? For me I feel like Mint is more refined than Ubuntu (especially with how canonical is going).
There's only one app center, one update manager, familiarity with windows, fast enough and has essentials pre installed (even if it is bloat for veterant Linux users).

I can accept the argument that there is no Wayland and packages are a bit behind, but for the average user, that's fine

RustyNova , (edited )

I keep hitting the cache on my 32gb laptop. So yeah, I'm using it.

But I made the dumb mistake of using a swap partition instead of a swap file

RustyNova ,

Typo. Meant swap file

RustyNova ,

Exactly what I meant, but typoed and put cache instead.

But yeah, I often get memory scares when opening large blender asset files. I got 32gb of swap, but the beast can get hungry fast (and I keep forgetting to close tabs)

RustyNova ,

True, but the swap partition is before the root partition, so I need to see if it doesn't break things with btrfs.

And secondly... I just need the motivation to do it. It's working good enough™ for now, and I do plan on distro hopping to NixOS soon so... Later.

RustyNova ,

If you're willing to use snaps, the next cloud snap is pretty great and easy to set up.

I'm not a fan of snaps nor how canonical push them, but this one gets a pass

RustyNova ,

Damn that's a really cool way to name your machines!

Why do I suddenly have the urge to rename mines...

RustyNova ,

My main is literally just the model name, my main server is "imaginary-tree" as a reference to Honkai Impact, and the two others are test and test2... So not that creative.

Although I do add "MkX" to show how many times I reinstalled the OS. Turns out, I accidentally broke them a lot-

RustyNova ,

*bad Devs

Always look on the official repository. Not just to see if it exists, but also to make sure it isn't a fake/malicious one

RustyNova ,

True. You can't always be 100% sure. But a quick check for download counts/version count can help. And while searching for it in the repo, you can see other similarly named packages and prevent getting hit by a typo squatter.

Despite, it's not just for security. What if the package you're installing has a big banner in the readme that says "Deprecated and full of security issues"? It's not a bad package per say, but still something you need to know

RustyNova ,

Oh, TIL

Edit: *YourWeb

RustyNova ,

That's a win, but it would need to be enforced... Which is harder to do

RustyNova ,

*Search engine optimization spam. Spamming your bings and duck duck go won't do anything.

RustyNova ,

Well if you get asked for sudo, then that's a risk.

How was the Snowflake proxy used in 2023? (forum.torproject.org)

We can also break down users by country. The largest contingent of Snowflake users are in Iran, which has been the case since the Mahsa Amini protests in 2022 1. The graph shows also a large number of users apparently from the United States, but we believe that may be partly the result of geolocation errors, and many of them are...

RustyNova ,

Can a linux/systemd nerd explain what the error is? I know it's a shutdown sequence, but I'm curious on the fault

RustyNova ,

Thanks for that!

Switching to Linux and actually being able to see real time logs made me actually curious how it works, so that's one gear out of the machine demistified
