A PR disaster: Microsoft has lost trust with its users, and Windows Recall is the straw that broke the camel's back (www.windowscentral.com)

It's a nightmare scenario for Microsoft. The headlining feature of its new Copilot+ PC initiative, which is supposed to drive millions of PC sales over the next couple of years, is under significant fire for being what many say is a major breach of privacy and security on Windows. That feature in question is Windows Recall, a...

Microsoft has done nothing to earn any good will or trust. Everything seems to spite the user or just harvesting maximum user data.

It is a matter of time before they figure out how to do targeted ads in dreams.

It is way too risky even if this feature was that revolutionary, which it isn't. It is a security nightmare for workplaces and at home.

I hope people just switch to something else or start self-hosting their own music.

Plexamp
I've only gave subsonic a try. But I'll look into Plexamp.

Linux has been great for me. I switched during Windows 10 forced updates and never been unhappy since. I hope more people at least give a try. If you have a computer that can't meet Windows 11 requirements, it is worth a shot.

Hey long as you get here on Linux it is all good lol.

People who blindly support this type of tech and AI being slapped into everything always learn the hard way when a case like this happens.

Suavevillain ,

This is going to be terrible for work place security.

Suavevillain ,

I'm not having that issue. I also use Freetube as a backup on desktop.

It is honestly great and the only hassle is manually getting your sub list.

The Internet Archive is so important. The closest thing to a digital library.

It is more important to archive things you like if you got the space. Even if you don't plan on using it for a long time.

One thing Linux needs to do is change the perception of how hard everything is compared to Windows. Some things are extremely less difficult on Linux.

Suavevillain ,
@Suavevillain@lemmy.world avatar

It is good to send new users to something like Gnome they can branch out. I think Cosmic will be a great fit as well. Outside of updates, you don't have to do too much in the CLI really. But long as you learn some of the basics how to get around and maybe make an alias. I think that will get you by just fine on Linux. I do think people should get users to try less Windows like experiences on Linux. Because a Windows like UI will just make them miss Windows.

I don't blame anyone. It doesn't work for me. I have my own space and can be productive at home. I don't need to be at the office getting coughed on or dealing with air temps.

This is really cool. I love emulation it is great to play old games with better options. I would love to see The N64 wrestling games get this type of treatment, I still play Virtual Pro Wrestling 2 often.

Roku explores taking over HDMI feeds with ads (www.lowpass.cc)

Roku is exploring ways to show consumers ads on its TVs even when they are not using its streaming platform: The company has been looking into injecting ads into the video feeds of third-party devices connected to its TVs, according to a recent patent filing.  ...

They want free prison labor instead of helping people. All programs that gave people shelter and UBI had high success rates of getting people off the streets. If you give people resources and real help. They can be housed, it isn't unsolvable at all.

I've been keeping an eye on Matrix if discord keeps getting worse. It is awful trying to look up guides or important info in discord's format.

Smart tech is good when it is limited. Soon as something must be connected to wifi to be accessible, It can become a chore. Read reviews and try to find good trustworthy products.

There extremely fragile men who lash out when violently when they get rejected or lose. I remember reading a case about a girl who lost her left because she beat a guy in a game of basketball. Rejection happens just move on.

People don't understand how time-consuming and hard it can be to even get food stamps depending on where you are. I worked at my state's dept of Food Stamps. The lines were always busy because so many people are struggling, then you add on work requirements and other nonsense people continue to struggle.

Microsoft is once again injecting pop-up ads into Google Chrome on Windows in a bid to get people to switch to Bing (www.theverge.com)

The software giant first introduced malware-like pop-up ads last year with a prompt that appeared over the top of other apps and windows. After pausing that notification to address “unintended behavior,” the pop-ups have returned again on Windows 10 and 11....

I'm thankful that I made the Switch to Linux after Windows 10 forced updates got annoying while gaming. I'll deal with whatever trade offs. I only need Windows for my Elgato atm.

This isn't a bad take. DE is what is going to keep people from running back to windows right away, mostly. I do think it is better for people coming into Linux not to try to emulate the Windows experience. It is easier to learn when you accept it is going to be different from the start.

I do see the appeal of non-smart TV's now. Just getting a device that host your media is a good option.
